5/5 and we didn't even go on the tour! Our trip got cancelled due to Hurricane Olivia. No hard feelings, as the staff promptly refunded the entire fee I paid. I'll definitely be back!!!!

OMG! One of the BEST things I've ever done on the Big Island!! Go ahead and rent a 4 wheel drive, and don't forget to acclimate at the Visitor Center!

This was the first time we went. Road in my friend's four wheel drive Navigator. It's about 20minutes to the top, starting from visitor center. You can't go too fast because some of the road is unpaved, lots of blind turns, and almost 40% grade.
At the top, make sure you bring warm clothing including gloves. I didn't and the wind chills the air another 10-15degrees.
We saw the sunset. Totally beautiful and picturesque. The summit has TONS of photo ops everywhere. You can make funny poses, serious poses, etc. It's photographers delight up here with so many backgrounds. For landscape, the clouds are creamy white. Rocks look like your on Mars. The observatories are exotic and sci-fi.
At about sundown, the ranger starts to tell everyone to leave. There's no lights up here so it gets pitch dark.

Hiked it up from the visitor's center, me and my 16 year old daughter. You need to be prepared and in decent shape, this is not your local backyard hill. But car ride to the top? I don't think so. We met only a few people on the way up and down, but all of them super interesting, great conversations and stories. The views are breathtaking, hard to describe.

A stunning mountain, one of the world's "must see" places.

The Mauna Kea Observatory is a must visit at sunrise. The early morning visit is worth getting up early to see the sunrise on Mauna Kea! Opportunity to take beautiful pictures and observe the beauty! Even if traveling during the summer, pack warm clothing. The temperatures on the summit can be below freezing.
