How many times can you say WOW? What an awesome sight to see the sunset atop Mauna Kea. The drive up to the summit is best done with a four wheel drive vehicle. I believe it may be jeep heaven up there! I took many, many, many photos from different vantage points and sun setting lights. We wondered about the weather, but it was clear (a few clouds) and crisp at the summit...perfect for sunset. We stopped at the visitor center at 9000 ft to get acclimated to the altitude. No problems! We took water and sandwiches to eat at the summit whilst we waited for sunset. We arrived about an hour before sunset and it was interesting to walk around up there. Be sure to dress warmly. We wore jeans, shoes, socks, sweatshirts, light windbreaker jacket. Wear a hat and gloves if you have them. Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow!

Hiking on Mauna Kea is other-worldly. The day we went was really cold and windy, there was snow on the summit and lower valleys. We enjoyed hiking to the lake as well as watching sunset from the summit. The evening star gazing at the lodge was so neat. We saw Jupiter, its rings and its moon. The park rangers are super helpful and friendly. Would not miss this attraction!

Would need to acclimate better to reach the summit. We had to turn back at the 10,000 foot level, both because of the clouds and weather, but also because of the ill effects we felt due to the altitude. We enjoyed the drive up the west coast and then to the Visitor Center, though. Had lunch at Wailea. Nice day trip.

You can drive up there by car, it is really no problem. Enjoy the sunrise or sunset and the stars at night. I rented a bike in Hilo and cycled up to the visitor centre at 9000 ft, till that point the road is paved.
