one of the most unique things to do on the Big Island; it's relatively easy to do on your own, 4-wheel drive is recommended but not essential, daytime travel is best if you do your own driving

This place is absolutely fantastic and wonderful! Hire a 4x4 car and you will be safe, as there are rangers that guide you from the visitor center and higher. You can get inside observatories - google how to before going, better come to the visitor center website for a part (they have some programs) and in addition to other observatories if you want to go inside. The views all around are amazing, on the sunset especially. And, keep calm, you are at the elevation of 4 km!

star-gazing at its best... arrive Visitor's Center well before sunrise... bring your star map along... and acclimate for at least an hour... then head on up to summit for sunrise... an unforgettable experience (also check out night sky with telescope viewing 6-10pm each night at Visitor's Center)

We arrived after dusk, and were treated to a very interesting presentation on astromony. The visitors centre has quite a few telescopes set up so guests can look at everything from the moon to the Andromeda galaxy! Fantastic. After acclimatizing to the elevation we drove to the summit. Sadly, between low clouds and an almost full moon the view wasn't as spectacular as I'm sure it normally it, but it was interesting nonetheless.
a 4x4 vehicle is definitley required, and the road is extremely rough (a good ab workout!).

amazing trip but boy was it cold! The road was only opened the day our tour went after a few days of being closed due to snow!
Luckily they kit you out with parkas and gloves etc and i had bought my uggs with me too - thank goodness!
Fabulous trip though and well worth it. Watching the moon come up while the sun went down was pretty breath taking. The star gazing part of the tour was also incredible.
