I was so excited about going to the summit, but not excited about the price of a tour. My husband and I decided to drive it ourselves in our rented Chevy Captiva. The western part of Saddle Road isn't great, but honestly I've driven on worse roads in both Iowa and the Chicagoland area! The rest of it is beautifully paved. Our car definitely strained up the access road and to the summit, but we took it slow. I was nervous about coming down after dark, so my husband suggested driving up and down before sunset and waiting at the visitors center for nightfall and stargazing. Great idea, and I don't really feel like I missed out! Still got to see all those beautiful stars. Also, they supply hot water and have hot chocolate and soup for sale, so we had a snack while waiting for the telescopes to come out. Got a little crowded after a bit so we left, but a fun experience overall.
