The trip up to the summit is an adventure and the views are spectacular. There are multiple observatories up on the summit and the sunsets are always the best! After dark there are experts available at the Park station to help you learn more about the Stars and have telescopes set up to show various highlights. I had no idea that there could be so many stars! From up there you see so much more than anywhere else and the experts there to help you understand more about astronomy make it very interesting!

We chose Mauna Kea Summit Adventures for our trip to the summit. Gordon was our tour guide and his attention to detail and interest in astonomy made a good tour GREAT! The view from the summit was spectacular and a great photo opportunity. Following sunset we headed back down the mountain to the visitors centre for a quick stop and then onto a private viewing of the stars through amazing huge telescopes set up by the guide. This was just as interesting as the summit tour. These guys really know how to look after their guests. I wouldnt recommend doing this on your own, the road long and winding and driving at night in unfamiliar territory is not advisable. Gordon is a fantastic guide, very passionate and really cares about his guests.

We took a tour and it was worth the $. High altitude so be careful of short breath & headache - drinks lots of water. I would not want to drive up there!

A great experience. The views of the sunset from the summit are unbelievable. Arrive before the sun starts to set and stay until the sun has completely gone if you can as the colours continuously change. Being above the clouds and among the observatories is a great treat. Highly recommended.
