Owner description: Built in 1942, this 53-mile long road is extremely dangerous with its narrow structure, blind turns, rough surface and single-lane bridges.

The new Daniel Inouye Highway is fantastic. Beautifully paved and marked road between Kona and Hilo. No services, so gas up before you go. Only restroom is at a campground with no potable water. Now it is less that 90 minutes from Hilo to Kona. This makes getting to the observatory visitors center very easy. (No rental cars permitted beyond the visitors center to the summit.)

This is a great road to get to the other side of the island. You will experience dramatic changes in landscape, fauna, etc. Be patient if you get stuck behind a slow vehicle (like we did). The road can be narrow, winding, with one lane bridges. You will eventually pass the driver reading a newspaper (true story). If you are lucky, you may get to see Army helicopters operating in the valley from Bradshaw Army Airfield.

The New Saddle Road is a quicker way to get from Kona/Hilo to Hilo/Kona than going the more windy and congested northern route. The road is freshly paved with great views of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea, as well as some impressive lava fields. It also has excellent reflective markings that really help if it gets foggy.

The interior is a completely different place from the coasts, and you can focus on it better on this newly upgraded road.

we were told that the road is in bad shape but we still decided to take his road. But the road was in excellent condition in Dec 2013 . The drive offers some spectacular views, a neat road and you can cruise to Hilo . you also experience multiple weather conditions while traversing this route.
So do not avoid this road. Added advantage is that it is a toll free road.
