Booked this place online. Information indicated that these were individual condos with small kitchen and bathroom. So far, so good. The hotel is located in the centre of Kailua and close to lots of bars and restaurants. That's pretty much the end of the good stuff! If you like shabby 1970's-type rooms with mouldy bathrooms, tatty shower curtains and crumbling woodwork in need of a coat of paint then this is your place! We would never return and at $100 per night I would at least have expected cleanliness. In addition there was no wifi and very unhelpful front-desk staff. This is not typical of Hawaii as generally people are helpful and friendly. There are lots of other places in Kailua-Kona to stay in so avoid this place at all costs.

Excellent location. Beds comfortable. There is virtually NO management: conflicting info, could not get extra towels (2 scrimpy towels for 8 days for 2 people) or linens. Bring EVERYTHING. There was no salt & pepper, cleaning supplies, paper towels, coffee filter, not even coffee for your first day. We arrived after midnight so that was hard. Unit not clean, or safe - no phone, shower mat, hand rails. No lobby phone, except pay phone. Lobby WIFI down almost all the time. We saw constant problems with other guests. Price excellent although we paid for 5 star. I'd barely give 3.

Room Tip: Make sure you have a phone! None in the rooms or lobby. WIFI rarely worked in the lobby. (None in th...

Do not stay in room 152. The kitchen and bathroom are one room!!!! There was dried food on the cabinets. The room looked like it had not been cleaned in a long time. We left a message for the front desk to get some cleaning supplies and never got a call back. The cieling was dirty as well (falling off the cieling). The rest of the hotel/condo might be nice but not this room.

I loved my studio here at the Kona Islander, it was great having a small kitchen with everything I needed to slice up all the marvelous fruits from the farmer's market only a block or so away!! This place had the feel of staying in a well-kept jungle with all the banana trees and lovely flowers on the grounds, but at the same time only steps away from shops and restaurants and I also had a view of the ocean waves from my door. Comfortable bed! Slept great with sounds of the waves! I hope to stay here again while visiting the Kona side. Parking is limited, but free parking just down the block next to the library, so no need to pay for parking.

Room Tip: I loved my room which was across from the beach, but would have been happy anywhere!

We managed to get two studio condos at the last minute in March for one night before we flew out back to the Mainland! We also got a great price (no Kamai'aina price for locals) for $102 per unit per night. That was a DEAL on March 2, 2013!!
This place was absolutely lovely. The grounds are gorgeous, and full of beautiful plants and birds. The rooms we booked were good. Yes, they are older and they aren't pristine brand new rooms, but they are very clean (sheets were bleached smelling and we searched the mattress for bedbugs) and have what you need. The bathrooms were also clean and the linens were plentiful and also sparkling clean. That is what is most important...oh, and the air conditioner worked GREAT.
We really enjoyed our stay here!
We rented room #119 and 230 and it was just perfect for us! The lanai (porch) was large enough for 4 people to laugh and have cocktails and enjoy the beautiful weather.
We had a very comfortable bed with a nice tempurpedic topper. The only complaint I had was that we had 2 very flat pillows. No extra pillows in either unit. I'd suggest that the owners add pillows since the existing ones are awful. My husband used ME as his pillow at one point, and I was not very accommodating. Just sayin'.
There is a microwave and dorm size fridge in the room which is a nice touch- as well as some dishes and cutlery. They do need wine glasses. It seems kind of decadent to drink wine out of coffee mugs, but, desperate times call for desperate measures. We were grateful for the wine opener.
The pool area is just beautiful. It had a couple of BBQ's if you were so inclined and lots of lovely foliage around.
The 8 person jacuzzi was a treat! Hot, ready and very clean. We really enjoyed it!!
They also had all kinds of free fruit at the front desk- oranges, bananas, and mandarins while we were there. Apparently, the employees and random locals bring extra produce for the guests to enjoy! There is free wi-fi in the lobby, too! Loved it to check in for the flight home!
I would highly recommend this place as an inexpensive base for all your Kailua-Kona adventures!!

We just stayed at Kona Islander Inn and at first the quaint lobby was not bad and the pool/hot tub exterior looked welcoming. Once we went to our room....that's where it stopped. First off, when we went into our room, smelled like dead man's flowers and musty, totally old bedding, dressers with no handles that you couldn't open and just OLD OLD OLD. But, if you think that's bad...there is defnitely a presence in that room! The Ghosthunters should go there because what we saw and all 4 of us saw it with our own 2 eyes....scary claw prints appeared on bathroom mirror TWICE! We were then trying to research history of this property but could not find anything at all! I know sounds hard to believe and we hear about hibby-jibby stories all the time but, first time we encountered ourselves! Any of you out there stayed in this room & had any similar experience??
