We stayed at The Royal Kona Resort for four days while in Kona.

The room was not ready when we arrived at 14:30. We had to get changed in the toilet. Very difficult when the only cubical was taken. We managed to get in the room at 16:00 hours. Would have expected room to be ready by 14:30 hours.

Slight queue to be dealt with initially. Someone from diamond resorts sat there twiddling his thumbs when everyone was busy. Maybe they could have utilised him better.

The car park should have been free for guest of the hotel. We had paid a lot of money to stay there to be told it was $12 a day. We struggled to find a space and this took time which impacted on our experience. If it was free to guests I would not have minded looking round and waiting but once a cost has been put on a service expectation then becomes you should have a place to park. When the LUAU was on it was even harder to park. The car park was across the road from the hotel and the car park seemed to be manned for extra security.

The hotel room was great. Big room. We paid extra for a corner room. Excellent views and huge balcony. Big bathroom with shower and bath. Only problem we found with the room was when the air conditioning was on it dripped on the bed and this was soaked when we came back off a trip. Room service had put it on when we where out.

Never ate at the hotel. Cheaper options out in Kona itself. Bongo Bens amazing for breakfast (three minutes walk from hotel) There where restaurant just outside the hotel Hugo’s which I think was part of the hotel. Walk down the strip there are Italians, pizza (bring your own beer) Indian, Hawaiian, American type restaurants. Things for everyone to eat.

The pool was always busy and loud so we spent most of the time in the lagoon. I wore shoes due to rocks but most people did not. Really quiet and fun looking at the fish.

Private school lessons around the pool and lagoon so had to avoid this as it got annoying after a while. Like being back at work.

Cocktails very good. $10 each I thought was reasonable for a hotel. From the bar we saw dolphins jumping in the distance.

July 4th parade was great and the fireworks amazing and these could be seen clearly from the hotel room balcony.

We thought the lady from pleasant holidays was very pushy and it seemed she got a lot of bonus for selling helicopter tours. Would like to know the commission she makes. Tried to sell us helecoptor tour for over $1200 to see the volcano.

Enjoyed the stay at Royal Kona Resort. It needs some updating and this is ongoing as they where putting a new roof on the restaurant.

Would stay again. Just disappointed with the car parking and air conditioning. Hope this can be sorted and guests park free. We paid about $1,000 for four nights stay. Plus $50 in car parking which we found frustrating. When customers pay this much money car parking should be free. This could make customers think again about staying. Shame to lose customer over car parking.

Aloha

Thank you for your review of our resort. We appreciate your valuable feedback and for sharing your experience with fellow travelers. We are happy to see overall you enjoyed your stay here with us and we are sorry to see there are some aspects of the resort that fell short of your expectations. Our resort does not have a resort fee as many of the resort in our area do have, which allows our guests the freedom of not being charged for items they may not use during their stay with us due to the resort fee we do have the parking fee where as other resorts will have a high resort fee. We do appreciate your feedback and will be sure to share your comments with our leadership team to see where we may make improvements for our overall guest experience. We hope to have an opportunity to welcome you again and show you the true spirit of aloha we are known for.

The hotel is great, but as an animal lover, I was disappointed to see the koi fish’s backs sticking out of the water in their ponds because they have outgrown them. I looked at the requirements for ponds in which koi fish should live and The koi within the center pieces of their hotel rooms are treated poorly due to their environment.

Koi fish deserve ponds of at least 3 feet in depth and these ponds are lacking that depth. Is disappointing to see such a beautiful hotel treat their fish so poorly when they’re so close to the ocean

Myself and extended family have stayed here many times and have been very happy in the past. Not so this trip sadly and we had 2 rooms for 10 nights. The lady that checked us in was very rude, the sidewalk around the pool was rough and rocky (poorly maintained), the air conditioner dripped on my son's bed, the refrigerator sound like a lawnmower in the room, and the new 'pool towel' system requires you to keep wet/soiled towels in your room, rather than having an appropriate place to deposit them if you are not using housekeeping daily. I frequently had to force security to find me a parking place because they oversell their parking and prepaid for those staying means nothing. Every morning when there was a luau scheduled our room would get a strong smoky odor for a few hours, often giving us headaches. I spoke to several other repeat customers around to pool and at the lagoon who were of the same opinion. Sadly I do not see my family staying here again. Hotel is becoming very rundown.

It seems the efforts we made to please you during your stay fell short of your expectations. We are very sorry to read of the encounter with our staff upon check in and will be sure to share this feedback with our leadership team as this is not a typical review of our staff. We are an older resort and we are in the process of making improvements to our resort and as always we are dedicated to providing excellent service, attentive staff, and a tranquil relaxing atmosphere at the Royal Kona. The Royal Kona has the old Hawaii feel, you can see Hawaiian royalty sitting by the koi ponds in the cool breeze, listening to the pounding of the surf and enjoying a pina colada and the delicious puupuus from the bar. The location is perfect, the rooms bright and regal with wooden sliding shutters, and the staff could not be friendlier or more professional. Walk to town, to the farmers’ market, or for coffee or dinner along the water where schools of yellow tang glow. Or just stay there for the luau or local music by the sea. It really is one of the last great hotels in Hawaii.

Good very large room and nice hotel amenities. Older hotel but we'll kept with many stores and good restaurants within walking distance. Great bar/lounge with awesome views. Very good in-house restaurant and a great luau that is a lot of fun.
