“rooms a little tired but still has that charm”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

I really enjoyed our stay at royal kona was upgraded to an ocean front room on the 6th floor, was very pleased but i thought i had paid for an renovated room so i didnt unpack, i asked to see another room in another tower it was exactly the same, i was told they were upgraded about 6 years ago the room i had was as good as it gets, so i settled down and just enjoyed the view, which was outstanding. The room was clean and lanai area was great, bathtub was very old and walls etc showed age. But i must say i really enjoyed the pool area and the lagoon for saltwater swimming. my husband went snorkeling on the last day of trip and got some beautful pic,s with our underwater camera. I liked being so close to everything you could walk to stores etc. and do something at night . Happy hour was 4 to 6 and took advantage of the mai tais special for 4.00 they were the best ive ever had. also was able to sit by the pool and a lovely waiter would come over and bring food and drinks. this was very special and i felt like we had made a great choice for the last 2 days of our trip. My husband on the other hand had a cold and was stuck reading up in the room but he still liked the hotel very much. he thought the room was great. soo ill give it a very good for a rating.

Aloha TA family, true, it's been several years now since we refurbished the resort, and since the economic down turn we've basically had to ensure our rooms are clean and well maintained. Although we're not the newest kid on the block anymore, and you'll find newer more expensive hotels around, you cannot beat our location. Our rooms are large, great views, we offer Kona's best bar for food and beverage and views, and a nice happy hour too from 4p-6p daily. We're not for everyone, but we are for a lot of us out there. Glad they shared, and really glad they enjoyed their stay, hope the hubby's feeling better.

We had a great time here. Great location and rates--and, of course, the bar. We were especially happy with the advice we received from Mattie Mae in the Expedia activity center. Her snorkeling recommendations ended up being one of the highlights of our entire vacation.

We were on the big island in October 2013 for our anniversary. The Royal Kona hotel and Don the Beachcomber was a trip back to the old times. We had a king room on the corner of the lagoon tower, ocean, pool and luau views. We would go back in a heartbeat. This is not a super luxury resort but it works for us.

Room Tip: Book through Costco or call the hotel direct

Aloha TA family, great to see they had a terrific anniversary, and that we work perfectly for them. Yes, our rooms are not fancy luxury, but they are clean and well maintained. As well as our grounds, restaurant and bar! They mention the corner king rooms which everyone loves for their large, wrap around lanais and views of the ocean. Book them early and in advance because inventory is limited! Glad they shared, we'll see them again for another anniversary soon!

The place looks like the type of postcard you want to send your family to show them what the Big island looks like. Sweeping vistas, dramatic waves, beautiful sunsets enjoyed over the muy-tai sampler at the lounge. The food selection was nice, but within walking distance you find several places that may be better. Our favorite meals in all of our Hawaiian vacation were at Bongo Ben's, without the ridiculous wait that some places in the area had and very friendly service. The hotel has a cheesy 70's vibe that we enjoyed, the prices were very good and make sure you spend time in the lagoon and watching the waves crash at night. Definitely get a room with view of the water. The balconies are very romantic at night, watching the stars and the ocean with your loved one will be the perfect memory to carry back home. I know I did.
Ps. Particularly enjoyed the counter table in the rooms. Came in very handy. Best place in Big island

Aloha TA family, refreshing to see such a nice review from our guests from NY. Not much to add, they nailed it, we're the best value, for the best location in Kona. We truly strive to provide clean and well maintained rooms and grounds and a cheesy 70's feel (just kidding) for our guests to enjoy. We'll look forward to seeing them again soon, I'm glad they shared their great stay!

After the hustle and bustle of Waikiki we were.glad to arrive at the tranquil Royal Kona Resort. You step out of the taxi and all you can hear are the sounds of the ocean. The resort was laid out beautifully and we stayed in the lagoon tower in a king corner ocean view room. We had full ocean views and could lay on our huge, very comfy bed each night listening to the ocean. The room was neat and tidy and very spacious! Shutters on the large sliding doors ensured we could sleep as late as we liked. Don's Beachcomber bar provided a lovely place to sip cocktails while watching the sunset although these were a little pricey compared to other places in town (and one night my wine was served in a plastic cup the size of an airline cup!!). This didn't deter us though! The grounds are beautifully maintained and a visit to the resort day spa is definitely worth it. The pool was of a good size and the snorkelling lagoon was filled with lots of marine life. The resort is big but you didn't feel crowded and it peaceful. Staff wrote friendly and attentive but gave you the space you need to unwind and relax. We will stay here again on our next trip to Kona.

Room Tip: Go for the king corner room, the views are amazing

I'm glad they enjoyed all of the things we boast about, clean well maintained rooms and grounds. Beautiful views, great food and beverages and the best location in Kona! Loved the view and the location of the resort. It was quiet relaxing and romantic to listen to the waves hit the rocks at the comfort of your bed. Not only that, you can take pleasure unwinding in the balcony with an exquisite view. I was also very fond of the restaurant with the beach view. We were entertained by a stunning sunset during our meal. So moving on the glamorous views; the room was very spacious and clean. No complaints regarding the service that was provided to us. I think Royal Kona is the best of the bunch and you should waste time looking for other places to stay. Oh before I forget, do not miss your chance to indulge in a good meal at Bongo Ben's! The food and service there is excellent and it's only a short walk from the hotel.

Aloha TA family, so nice to see an Amex Traveler and visitor from NY had such a great stay with us and shared their glowing review. They definitely had it all, the best views, sounds of the ocean, great meals, and not to mention shared some valuable tips too. We're at the end of Alii Drive, steps away from dining, shopping, galleries, historical sites, the farmers market and Kailua Pier. I'm so glad they had a great stay, we'll look forward to their return. Mahalo Nui Loa,

Conveniently located near downtown Kailua-Kona. Rooms are adequate, but good dollar value. Our favorite amenity is the saltwater swimming lagoon where we were able to view fish and were visited by turtles. Ocean front restaurant was quite good, though only open for dinner 3 nights per weeks. Ocean front lounge was very good for more casual fare and delicious mai-tais.

Aloha TA family, I'm back from a holiday break. I'm so glad they found us to be such a great value. We truly are the best value for the best location in Kona! Our private lagoon is also such a treat, especially when the Honu (green sea turtles) visit at high tide. DOn't forget to watch for the pods of resident Spinner Dolphins when having breakfast at Don The Beachcomber or when dining at Don's Mai Tai Bar, they're there almost every day! Glad they enjoyed, and really glad they shared. Mahalo!
