“Location great, service not so.”
Reviewed November 22, 2013

Many people have already given comments about the outdated state of the resort. They are correct, however it was very clean and the room was a very generous size. The aircon worked well and was quiet and the beds were quite comfortable with good quality linens.
The bar for service and food was excellent. Fabulous location on the waterfront watching the sun set. Great mai Tai's.
On the negative side, the front desk people were not very friendly or particularly helpful. There is no room service or free wifi.
The hot water for the shower took ages to come on and the shower was pretty feeble.
The best advice I could give to anyone contemplating staying here is forget the breakfast buffet. The selection was poor. The hot food was cold. The service was almost non existent. Save your money and walk downtown to splashers for breakfast. It's cheaper and far far nicer.
Thanks to Waynette at the Expedia desk. She was terrific.
The pool and lagoon were good. Small and could get crowded but good facilities.
The Royal Kona is in a fantastic location, so close to town and easy to walk to restaurants etc.
we gave it 3 stars, but could give it an extra half. For the price it was good value.

Room Tip: Upgrade to ocean front to sit and watch the ocean and boats from your own Lanai. Well worth the ex...

Aloha TA family, nice to see our guests from NZ enjoyed their stay with us, although there were a few concerns. We normally have rave reviews for the service our front desk team provides, and although our breakfast buffet is limited, for the variety and quality of food, the price is competitive. I'm glad they shared, so we can look at where we need to improve, they have some great tips for rooms and dining too. We hope to see them again on their next trip to Hawaii, mahalo!

We had a king size bed in a spacious room. That's great for a family of 3. The location is good. The resort has a kiddy pool. My kid could play while we were enjoying the view to the ocean. We didn't have an ocean view room but we could still see the ocean from the balcony.

However, the room (including the wall and carpet) looks old.

Aloha TA family, I'm glad this family found our large rooms spacious and comfortable for their stay Glad to know they enjoyed the pool and the close proximity to everything. Seems like they had an awesome view of the ocean from their lanai (balcony) some hotels sell that as a Partial Ocean View. The were in a standard room, which is still perfect of your on a tighter budget. Although we're not brand new, we do our best to provide really clean and well maintained room and grounds for our guest to enjoy. Hope to see them again soon, Mahalo!

We booked the Ocean view room for our stay in Royal Kona Resort through Costco travels for our 3rd wedding anniversary. We stayed there for 4 nights. I was little disappointed after seeing the room as it was little dated and the bathroom was too small. They gave us a bottle of champagne as complimentary. I loved the view from our balcony and the sound of the crashed waves was amazing. The good part is all the restaurants and shops are walkable distance from the resort. On our anniversary day, we booked for Luau show and it was awesome. The host was very funny and made our day. The staff were very friendly and good hospitality.

I was upset that it was a short trip. Next time, I would like to visit BI for a week and would like to stay in RKR. I would definitely recommend to stay in Royal Kona Resort.

Aloha TA family, great to see more satisfied guests enjoyed their stay. Yes, the location of the resort, and close proximity to the ocean makes for great memories. I'm glad they enjoyed themselves so much, and that they had so much fun at the luau too. Although we're not the newest kid on the block, we do do strive to provide clean and well maintained rooms and grounds for our guests to enjoy, we'll definitely see them again when they return. Mahalo!

We had a fantastic vacation and Royal Kona Resort was Fantastic! Amazing view, location, people and hospitality! We could not have had a better time in The Big Island! We would recommend Royal Kona Resort and would definitely stay again! The staff really wanted our stay to be memorable and they were very helpful to share places of interest and things to "must see!" We loved the sound of the crashing waves in the evening and watching the beautiful sunsets in the evening!

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the ocean and the lagoon. We had a perfect view for the amazing luau with...

Aloha TA crew, more really satisfied customers. These well traveled reviewers did their homework I'm sure when they planned their vacation. It's great to see them, and others recognize the great staff we have. All of us in the hospitality business want to ensure our guests are happy and have amazing vacations. I'm glad they had a great room that they were able to enjoy the ocean and views from, and that they were able to enjoy all the wonderful things the Big Island has to offer. We'll definitely look forward to seeing these guests again soon. Much mahalo,

The first + that I found was even before we arrived at Royal Kona. The manager Jay was always very nice & very helpful with all my questions & emails. We had taken up the deal they had for hire car & brekky. When we arrived and pulled up at reception I was taken aback at how beautiful everything was. Friendly staff right from the get go. Then when we got up to our room (room 419) the size of the room & the view was from our balcony was amazing. We will definitely be back if we go to the Big Island again. The only downside was our stay was too short. We stayed 4 nights. We found no fault with the property. Being so close to the ocean made it so enjoyable. Whether it was drinks at the bar or breakfast in the mornings we was very happy with all we encountered.

Room Tip: Room 419 great views & good sized room

Aloha TA family, glad our friends from Down Under had an awesome stay, too bad it was too short, cure for that is stay longer next time! I didn't do anything crazy for them, just answered questions, made suggestions and made sure they were happy. It's our goal to have happy guests, making awesome memories. It's all about doing your homework before you travel, and they did just that. No surprises, no confusion, no disappointment, just exceeded expectations. We'll look forward to their visit next time their travels bring them back to Kona for sure. Mahalo Nui Loa,

Aloha TA fans, glad these guests loved their stay with us too! Again, complimenting the location, which is the best in Kona right on Alii Drive. Not sure why they thought our restaurant prices were too high, we're pretty right on in the mix, and have some awesome food as well. Try Happy Hour at Don's Mai Tai bar for happy hour from 4p-6p nightly too. Good tips, as there are other great places to enjoy in town, have a loo. We'll see them again too when they return soon I hope, Mahalo!

We had a ocean front room in the lagoon tower. The room was nice somewhat dated but clean, comfortable beds and plenty of space. The biggest plus was the sound of the ocean at night the waves coming in and hitting the wall and sitting on the lanai watching the activity on the ocean. The location is the best, walking distance to anything you would want on a vacation. All the staff was nice and helpful. We prepaid breakfast buffet it worked good for us , but if you are expecting a large buffet with a lot of options it would not be for you. It was our first trip to Kona and will come back and stay at the Royal Kona.

Room Tip: Loved Lagoon tower because of the sound of the ocean the waves.

Aloha TA family, great to see a first time visitor to Kona had such a great stay with us. Our awesome location allows most of our guests to see and hear the ocean from their clean well maintained rooms too. Glad they found our location to Alii Drive convenient too, with shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, farmers market, historical sites and the pier handy too. We'll definitely look forward to welcoming them back when they return. Much Aloha,
