“Nice Hotel in Perfect Location”
Reviewed March 10, 2013

I was very pleased with the Royal Kona. I stayed there for 4 night on a tour with Road Scholar. It was one of the nicest hotels on our tour. Though the hotel is a little dated (from the 60's) it sort of added to it's charm. It was sort of tiki bar Gidget goes Hawaiian. The room was very clean and comfortable. I really enjoyed it. The views from my ocean front room were exquisite. I hear the waves crashing all night and watch the humpback whales breach from my balcony by day. The location is perfect and you can walk to Kona town and shop and see historic sites. I would definitely recommend it.

Aloha TA family, must be a great time to travel, all of our senior contributors are! So nice to know these guests enjoyed their time with us while traveling with the group. Our resort sits next to the ocean, beautiful views, great staff, tasty food and beverage, a little something for everyone. We enjoyed our stay, our room was clean and nice. It is a older hotel but full of charm. We had an ocean view room and could here the waves during the night. It was great and put me to sleep.
The staff was friendly and lots if shops were in walking distance and felt very safe.. I would stay again and again.

Room Tip: If you do not want to hear the waves crashing on the beach do not get the ocean view rooms.

Aloha TA family, great to hear these senior reviewer guests had such a nice time and enjoyed their stay. They are correct, we have amazing views from the majority of our rooms. Our location is the best in Kona, and we truly offer the best value in town. Yes, there are more expensive, fancier places to stay, check your budget, do your homework, and you too will be pleasantly surprised when you arrive and stay, glad they had a nice stay. Mahalo

We stayed in the Ali'i tower and from the outside, the resort looks great. It's located on Ali'i drive (where tons of shops and restaurants are) & has a great view of the ocean. The drinks at the bar were great & so was the food at Don the Beachcomber. They also have a laundry facility. If you wanted to go to the beach, the $2 trolley stop was just a couple of minutes away. The staff were very friendly & helpful. The resort is in need of a major update. The inside of the hotel and the rooms were very dated. Right when you step out of the elevator onto your floor, the smell is overwhelming. I wasn't sure what it was, but it smelled like a combination of dirty feet, sweat, & mildew. The room had stained carpet, & the room was extremely cold. The thermostat was set to 70, but it was freezing. We'd open our sliding door so the A/C would stop running & to get fresh air, but the noise of the hotel's A/C units outside were so loud. The staff entrance was also below our balcony & could get a bit noisy at night. The bathroom maybe clean, but you can't tell cause of how worn down it looks & the lighting was terrible. Housekeeping cleaned what they could, but they can't take away the wear & tear of the place. If the resort does a remodel, I'd recommend it to everyone based on location.

Aloha TA family, glad this Senior reviewer enjoyed the location, food and beverage and staff. We strive to provide clean, well maintained rooms and grounds, it's unfortunate to hear our rooms did not live up to their expectations. I've sent a personal message to determine which room they stayed in, so we can address the deficiencies. We appreciate their comments, helps us do our job better. I'm confident they enjoyed the Big Island and all the wonderful things it has to offer!

The hotel's location is ideal and our ocean front room was beyond what we expected. Think crashing waves, balcony sunsets and a comfortable room. You can swim around in the private lagoon and there are several great beaches just down the road. This is a good central base to explore the island and I would certainly return to stay here anytime. While I did not eat, drink or participate in any resort activites, it is all right there if you want it. Get an ocean front room and enjoy your days.

Aloha TA family, great to see a little run reviews from our Senior TA Contributors. These are the travelers that do the leg work, a little home work, to ensure they have great vacations and holidays. It's nice to know we exceeded their expectations, too bad they didn't take the opportunity to sample the great food and beverage at Don's Mai Tai Bar, truly a wonderful location, great sunsets, and usually a pod of spinner dolphins in the bay to entertain us! Mahalo Nui Loa,

Love the location of this hotel. 15 mins from the airport, 10 mins from Costco and since it's right along the Ali'i drive, you can just walk and choose from among tons of restaurants along the street. Very safe place to walk around even at night. Rates are reasonable and it's right by the water which makes it very scenic. The good beaches along the Kona coast are like at least 30 mins away. Clean and very spacious room. Has personal fridge inside and a safe. :)

Aloha TA family, this Senior Contributor nailed it, obviously did their homework, and found that our location is truly the best in Kona. Definitely not a marble and glass palace, nor do we advertise that, but do offer the best location for value around. Clean, well maintained rooms and grounds, and best of all NO RESORT FEES. Check out the competition up and down the coast, Resort Fees will get you when you least expect them. Glad these guest enjoyed their stay with us. Mahalo

My boyfriend and I stayed a Wednesday-Friday at the Royal Kona on the Big Island. Check in was super smooth, our room was spacious, clean and comfy. We had a view of the parking lot, but for a rate of $119 that we got on Priceline.com, it was totally fine.
The best part about this hotel is the location. It is right at the end of Ali'i Drive where all the restaurants, shops and at the other end, by the big pier, the best snorkeling!
We also found ourselves at the bar every night for a nightly mai-tai and they were delicious. The food was not so great, but the drinks and the bartenders were above average.
I would definitely recomend this hotel to a friend/family. We're actually thinking of doing a large family Christmas trip and l am pushing for everyone to stay here!

This hotel is right on the water. Looks great from the distance. We had a partial ocean view room on 5th floor. We were on the side of the private beach. Room was spacious but the tower we stayed in needs an upgrade. We didn't use the pool as we only had 3 nights to see the whole island. This hotel is in a good location. You can walk to he nearby cafe's and restaurants. Internet min cost is $9.95 for 24 hrs. Parking $10 per day, buffet breakfast approx $18 plus tax. The best way to see he island is to drive. We hired a car and included a GPS which was great as it gave commentary as you arrived at your destination highly recommend this. Overall the Royal Kona is not a bad place to stay we were only ever in the room to shower and sleep.
