“Well past prime”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

We stayed at the Royal Kona for 2 day side trip while spending December 2012 in Maui. The room was as pictured on the hotel website except the photo didn't show the ceiling that needed to be refinished; the walls that were chipped, stained and in severe need of at least 2 coats of paint; the stained and worn carpeting; the rust stains on the bathroom floor; and the stained, chipped and dirty furniture. We were in the second building and the only ice machine for the 6 floors was out of service during our stay. There was no hotel guide in the room to allow us to check on the 'facilities' offered by the hotel. When we were checking in there were 3 employees behind the front desk and it took almost 5 minutes before 1 of them was able to start the check-in
process and we were the only guests at the desk the whole time we were at the desk. Low 1 1/2
star hotel at 3 1/2 star prices. Will not be returning on our next visit to the Big Island.

Room Tip: Stay away from this place.

Aloha TA family, ouch, seems like we missed the mark with these guests. Please read between the lines though. I sure hope they enjoyed the short time they had on the Big Island, Sorry to know they felt our resort wasn't up to their standards. Mahalo

My family of four stayed here for two whole weeks. During our stay we were economical with using our towels and tried to hang them to dry and reuse them as much as possible, however, when we needed new towels the most they would replace was two at a time, no matter how many we turned in. That was extremely frustrating, we also ran completely out of toilet paper at one point and had to walk to another building to retrieve another roll. On New Years Eve we were informed that the machine that they use to wash the linens needed a new part from the mainland and no clean linens were available!! These types of problems are more then a simple inconvenience. Also keep in mind you pay separately for everything in Hawaii. The parking for us was $10 per night and you got a swipe card. Many nights we would arrive back to the lot to find the lot full, it is close to the shopping and they sell spots when you are gone. We stayed in the northern most building and on the north side, we were kept awake every night by the live music at the restaurant Hugo's, next door. We enjoy sleeping with the windows open but the music was so loud that we had to keep them closed. I was disappointed in this hotel over all. If i ever go back to Kona i would probably find another place to stay. But if you want to be able to walk to the shopping area and be right on the ocean you might consider the Royal Kona. The restaurant which was extremely pricey but had a great view and decent food was right on the water. The TikiBar had nice views as well. There really is not much beach area in Kona. If you want sandy beaches stay somewhere else. You must rent a car to get to good swimming and snorkeling beaches or pay to go out on a boat trip. The volcano was a worth while trip, but plan on taking the entire day to get there, tour and then drive back to Kona. My suggestion would be to spend a night on that side of the island to explore what that area has to offer. It is a couple of hours drive from one side of the island to the other with no stops and there are great places to stop on the southern end. I suggest the southern most bakery!!! They have very tasty Malasadas(Hawaiian donuts) and clean bathrooms!!

Aloha TA family, another mixed review. Seems like we've been on a bad streak lately, but never fear. for the few that have unfortunate stay, the majority who stay, have wonderful times. during Christmas through March, all hotels in Hawaii run extremely full. We try, as well as our competition, try hard to provide wonderful memories for our guests. sometimes things out of our control happen, like the laundry vendor who services the entire island had a malfunction, and it affects us all, we work hard so that doesn't trickle down to affect our guests, but sometimes it does, and for that I'm truly sorry. Seems like they enjoyed the many positives about the resort, I'm sure they had a great time on the Big Island. Mahalo Nui Loa

Hawaii Big Island is well worth the visit for it's magnificent natural views but personally I would advise spending a little more for a more modern and comfortable hotel, the Royal Kona was probably really nice about 20 years ago but it has been let go with little to no investment since then, the planter boxes on each floor are empty, wouldn't be hard to add a few plants, the curtains are old wooden panels, bed is old and desperately needs replacing and reception staff (especially the Japanese Guest Services member) are nonchalant when it comes to assisting guests. TV offering is good, channel wise, but poor in picture quality which constantly broke up and became unwatchable.
A positive though is the location of this property, on the waterfront near central Kona.
A tip though for anyone coming to the Big Island, make sure you rent a car, there does not appear to be any public bus service so it is your only way around, if you, like me have never driven on the right hand side before, this is a good place to learn as it has low traffic and big open roads.

Room Tip: High the better I guess

Aloha TA family, wow, another unsatisfied customer, and a well traveled one at that. Please make sure, wherever you stay and travel, that you do your homework, a little research on the location, transportation, etc. make sure you choose the right place for you, as there are many, many choices. Hope they enjoyed all the amazing things our island has to offer.

Let me start by saying absolutely beautiful location! Unfortunately that is the only positive for this review.
My new wife and I arrived on Christmas Day to begin our Honeymoon. My wife had emailed both the hotel reception and the restaurant Don's the Beachcomber at least ten times. She confirmed Christmas Dinner reservations, she was even asked by the food and beverage manager what her favorite flower was so they could set up a beautiful dinner table for us. This was just such a lovely touch and we could not wait to get there. We were also offered a bottle of champagne on arrival to celebrate our honeymoon (via email). How lucky are we?.... We arrive... No bottle of champagne... No beautiful dinner table... Not even a dinner booking!!!
Breakfast buffet staff treated us like walk ins off the street on two separate occassions, denying us of take away coffee as part of our included buffet breakfast...even though we only took advantage of maybe half the breakfast's we had actually paid for as part of our room. Another morning, again treated like a walk in, a waitress spoke to my wife in an appauling manner because she had not placed our reservation card on the table immediately because I had it in my hand whilst I was getting my plate of food.
we have travelled to kona twice before. Maui once before and Oahu 7 times and we were the most excited about this trip for all the reasons already mentioned and we thought we were booking a great choice in this hotel, unfortunately Royal Kona has left us with a very sour taste. We will never return to Royal Kona Resort. Just another number once they have taken your money. In Oahu now for another 4 weeks... Should have just come straight here.

Just returned form a stay here...did last Christmas there as well. It is tired, I swear they never swept the elevators the whole 2 weeks we were there. Room was mildew scented, I kept the patio door open all the time I was in the room including all night, the pluses...central to Kona, walking to all sorts of places, close to many beaches like the Old Airport which has a great walking trail, and easy access to anywhere. The drinks in the open air bar and good, the view is superb, the luau fun to watch form the balcony of the room, parking is available. Minuses, it is time to remodel this place. They actually had some laundry fiasco on New Year's Eve so no new towels or sheets. Sheesh! The Courtyard King Kamehameha is a place I stayed in September....would stay there again because it is as easily accessible to all the places I mentioned and it is clean and redone. The Royal Kona has seen the demise of the monarchy....hope they listen to all these comments and upgrade. The King Kam and Waikoloa will surely win if this place does not improve. Too bad. Got the hotel as a package with Hawaiian Airlines, maybe they need this feedback as well.

Aloha TA family, guest make a good point, it would be fantastic to have a complete remodel, but unfortunately, that's not in the plans for our near future. As mentioned, when the resort (any resort) runs at near capacity, especially during the holidays, it's hard to be flexible with room assignments etc. Although there are newer hotels to stay at in the area, I stand by the fact that we're the best value for the best location in Kona. laundry fiasco they mentioned was caused by the laundry vendor, who happens to service us, our competition and the whole coast, so we all felt the minor disruption that day, and it was resolved the next. Things that happen in the hospitality business. We try hard to avoid issues, and ensure our guests are not affected, sometimes its out of our control. And, to answer their question, yes! we listen to all comments and concerns, and work hard to improve where and when we can, hence the reason I respond to all guest comments, and most receive a personal private message too. Mahalo!

We have to admit, once our date was getting closer, we were reading the reviews here and started to get doubts. Well, the heck with the reviews, we had a an AWESOME TIME! Yes, the hotel was built in 1968, however, our room, 479 in the BAY TOWER was better than expected! Most importantly, very clean. The staff and especially the bartenders Misty, Travis and the other guy :-) were just a pleasure to talk with and have fun and relax. The grounds are very clean and have the authenticate feel, additionally, I don't think you cant get any closer to the ocean, WOW, truly amazing with the thunderous waves, surf, and view, did i mention the VIEW!!!! All in all we will stay again, you can bet on that! If you want manicured lawns, pricey and overcharged wonderlands, and no value on return, then I recommend staying someplace else as I have experienced in the past.

Aloha TA family, glad to know we met and in some areas exceeded these guests expectations. Seems like we've been taking quite a beating on the review lately, sometimes that happens when we're running close to capacity, night after night. All rooms are used, and we're unable to offer upgrades, paid or not, and have more flexibility with our room assignments. These guests had a wonderful time, like most our guests. Mahalo!!

This hotels major upside is where it is at! My first 2 trips to the big island were in timeshares, both of which were 25-35 minute drives to Kona bars and shops. From the Royal Kona, it was an easy walk to a bunch of bars and shops (even a little farmers market), even the Kona Brewing Co.. The downstairs bar does make a killer Mai Tai. It is very nice they have do it yourself laundry, but bring quarters if you plan to use them.

The bad part is that the rooms are not as new or nice as the timeshares I stayed at. The rooms do have a little fridge, sitting area and a little outside area. There was mold in the shower and you could hear your neighbors through the patio glass if they were outside. What this place really needs is a much bigger pool area!!! It can be tough to find a good beach on the big island, so people need somewhere to get some sun and relax, which you wont find here...

Room Tip: I recommend ocean view, but the waves can get LOUD!
