We booked this place on the internet in August of 2003 for our marriage/honeymoon and was totally dissapointed. First and foremost, the staff was not too friendly at the front desk. When we actually got to the room we were even more dissapointed. This hotel should be named "Royal Messy Resort". The appearance of the room gives the impression that it has not been cleaned in over a year. The furniture was old and the room was musty. We had to check out the same day and find another hotel. Definitely not recommended for any occasion, unless you are desparate

Dirty dark rooms with wall paper falling off the wall, linoleum floors in the bathroom coming up, dirty carpet, exterior hallways concrete. We bid on priceline for what we thought was a three star hotel, that was hyped as being totally renovated. The farthest thing from the truth. Needed total redo. Will never book a room fron priceline or ever stay at the Royal Kona. Beware of priceline as their ratings are exaggerated

We recently had to go to the big island for a funeral. It was a last minute thing and the last thing on our mind was hotel quality, trip enjoyment, etc. Some friends of ours arranged for us to stay at here.

The entrance was great. The lobby beautiful. The hotel ambience was pleasing, and the overall feel was definitely the "aloha" spirit.

The room was nice and big. The decor was somewhat dated, but the balcony overlooked the small sand beach area, the volcanic rocks, and the entrance to the harbor area.

The restaurant was great. I have never seen a hotel restaurant with good quality food at Denny's prices! We ate here every morning for breakfast. The waffles with cocnut syrup are to die for!!!

Despite the grim reason for the visit, we would definitely stay here again. Highly Recommended for the price.

We had stayed here years ago when this property was a top of the line
Hilton and enjoyed our stay very much. This past November while
traveling to the Big Island with 2 other couples- we chose this hotel
again because of its location and various budgets within our group. We
had NO complaints whats so ever.

Yes, the hotel is worn (other reviewers complaining of stained, worn
carpeting in hallways, etc...paint peeling ) well... it has OPEN AIR
Hallways and is right next to the ocean! We NEVER saw bugs in the hotel
but guess what - you are in a TROPICAL place and there are going to be
bugs here and there!

Anyway, we all had the romance package deal which gave each couple a
Sebring convertible, Corner King Room with ocean front wrap around
balcony, dinner cruise, luau tickets and breakfast buffet every
morning. This all for 700.00 a couple for 3 days. The luau show was
very good and so was the luau food (surprising for luau food -believe
me). Our rooms were clean and comfortable and had BIG lanai's
oceanfront. Nice size CLEAN bathroom with extra vanity outside door The
breakfast buffet was decent with a nice selection - you didn't walk
away hungry and we found the employees to be friendly and attentive
through out the hotel.

I guess because we have been to the various islands many times before, and stayed at top notch and (not so top notch) places we don't mind a hotel like the Royal Kona Resort. We feel our money is spent better on doing things around the island rather than paying for the "AMBIENCE FEEL OF A HOTEL"
When it comes down to it, how much time do you really spend in your
rooms? We were gone everyday and bascally slept, showered and ate
breakfast there. This place has to be the best value in Kona situated
in the heart of the action with many restaurants and stores within
walking distance. We snorkeled just down the road on Alii Drive and had
a great time. We will definitely return to this hotel again. You cannot
beat the price and location!

I had already booked our Vacation with the Royal Kona and then found this site and read the various reviews and became a bit apprehensive.
Yes, it is old and dated, the wallpaper in our room was peeling and some tile in the shower missing, but the money we saved for an over-the-water, wrap around balcony on the 6th floor, was worth it. The pool area has been re-done, the location to shops and restaurants is great, and the food at the Luau terrific. We used the money we saved for a helicopter tour and snorkle trip. We have stayed in many 4-5 star hotels around the world and if you are "really" fussy, Royal Kona may not be for you. But we would stay there again.
