We stopped in to this hotel after landing in Hilo, going to volcanoes national park and driving up the coast. They had a vacancy (we had nothing booked) and for just over $100we got a fantastic room. Wrap around balcony- a view of the ocean on one side and mountains on the other. Parking was also included. The room was massive and really clean. Don't pay for the luau unless you want the food, you can watch from poolside and save yourself $50 pp. great restaurants out on the main road and not too pricey! Great hotel, great value. I want to go back!

Booked the king corner suite and was very excited until we arrived.. The hotel is in bad need of repair. The paint is chipped the decor is very dated . The bathroom was tiny not even a full sized tub, faucets were rusted and had mildew odor. Food was poor.. Only good thing about this hotel is the location. I would not stay here again.....

I was pleased to be given this hotel as a 3* Hotwire bid. I read the Trip Advisor reviews which helped make the stay better. For example, parking on the street worked well and avoided the $10 parking charge. When asking for an early check-in, the first woman simply said "Your room isn't ready" and advised us to check back later. After checking out the facility and doing a litte shopping, we came back an hour later to a different woman, who also said "Your room isn't ready" but added the important customer-oriented words "but let me see if I can find one that is." This allowed us to begin using the pool at 1:00 which made a big difference for us!

The room we were given was great! It was a back corner room on the fifth floor of the Lagoon building. As others have said, the carpet and furniture is dated. However, the size of the room, the two full sinks, 40+ feet of lanai, and TWO LUGGAGE RACKS (why doesn't every hotel do this?) made the stay enjoyable. As an added bonus we enjoyed watching the sunset from our lanai while overlooking the luau with its pleasant Hawaiian music! we also loved the corner king room with floor-to-ceiling windows on 2 sides.

We needed a one-hour late check out and were told to ask the evening before. No help there, so we tried again in the morning, also without success. Finally at 10:30 we were granted another hour to 1:00 which was perfect for us.

I would probably give this a 4* rating, but based on the nice room we were given even on a reduced price room and eventually meeting our requests for early check-in and late check-out, I'm going 5*. I should also point out that the manager said in a reply to another TripAdvisor review, that if you don't like your room, make sure to ask for another. I had an image of that on my iPad if needed, but it wasn't necessary. You should also make sure you are given a map of the hotel. We we're given one, but I saw them at the front desk as we checked out.

As a tip, you can take a nice mile-long walk north. I only went a short distance south, but it looks nice too.

Room Tip: If you don't like your first room, ask again. Checking in early gives more opportunity for switching.

Really enjoyed the location of this hotel. Right on the water and close to many restaurants and shops for walking (although you need to drive to get to a beach this is quite normal it seems in Hawaii).
We booked a "garden view" room and got a partial ocean view without even asking for it which was awesome. Nice to have the Lani, they could spruce it up a little with flowers in the planters. (We stayed in the Ali tower)
My only complaint would be the plumbing, it's very loud and whether its you or your neighbour flushing the toilet it will wake you up.
The staff were friendly and sent up extra towels when asked.
Internet rates are expensive and unlike the ads suggest there's no buisness centre with internet access... however many area restaurants in the area offer free wi-fi.
Beds were comfy, it was clean and the luau was very fun. Good service and food at the bar with a beautiful setting.
Would stay there again

We stayed at the Royal Kona for nine days, and had an coean-front room with incredible views. The location of this hotel really cannot be beat, and there is no other hotel that can even come close. Within walking distance of the main shopping area, near numerous dining and nightlife options, and a front row seat to the ocean. The lounge is completely open-air and a great spot for sunset drinks and pupus - yummy mai-tais! That being said, the rooms can be rather tired and hallways/doorways in need of paint and freshening up. There was a small fridge in the room, whcih was much appreciated. Tub/shower is small and the bathrooms are a bit cramped. Mattress appeared to be newer, but was hard. It is definitely old-school, and the dining options in the hotel are limited. The usual add-on expenses can be expected (parking, internet, etc.) Make sure you ask for a room in the Lagoon Tower - quietest overall and best views. Lots of tour groups coming in and out, mostly staying in the other two towers (Alii and Bay). The Bay tower is next to a busy restaurant and night spot, with music blaring till late, so not a good option if you are looking for peace and quiet. Also, the hotel puts on a luau four to five nights a week from 5 to 8 pm, and there is no escaping the noise and crowds, no matter where your room is. The pool is small but right on the ocean, a great place to put up your feet and watch the waves. The hotel has a small private ocean lagoon on the south side, where you can snorkel and have a quiet swim in protected water. No complaints about the staff, but they did not overwhelm with great service either. This hotel is recommended, if you have a good room location and you don't mind some noise and more old-school set-up.

Room Tip: Ask for the Lagoon Tower, higher up for less noise and better views.
