Stayed here for 3 nights on our tour of the Island and loved every minute of it. An unbeatable location right in the rocks and a 15 minute slow walk from town so you can avoid the noise and madness of Kona. We hadn't booked and just rocked up and took their last room which was on the third floor with a great ocean view (the lapping and/or crashing of the waves rocking you to sleep at night). Simple and homely, no TV or telephones in the room, just comfy beds and great lanais. Outdoor breakfast comes in the price as does a small swimming pool. The current managers, Ruba and Jann were so welcoming. When we were there some of the guests gathered around the pool to sink a few drinks once they'd eaten in town and swap stories into the night. There is free wifi and parking on-site. Great value for money and I would recommend it to anyone.

My wife and I stayed here on our honeymoon in 2004. We were suprised to see that was not a TV, radio or even a clock. However, that all seemed to help settle us down and get us working on "Hawaii Time". The sound of the waves crashing on the rock wall below our window at first seemed to be an impossible obstacle to overcome when trying to rest, but the complete blackout I had everytime I laid my head on the pillow proved otherwise. BEST NIGHTS SLEEP EVER. The soudn of the waves rock your mind to sleep and the view from your Lenai is breathtaking. Do yourself a favor and stay at the Kona TIki the next time you are in Kona.

We stayed at the Kona Tiki with friends in June and we all really loved the stay. The rooms are motel-like with tiny bathrooms, but you're not in Hawaii for a hotel room are you? Every Lanai is oceanfront, and in the 1st floor rooms you can walk right out into the grass in front of the seawall. The ocean outside your window is mesmerizing. It doesn't lap at the shore, it booms all day long against the seawall protecting the oceanfront buildings and smashes into a saltwater pool about 100m away. Surfers and boogey-boarders are often surfing the break right outside your balcony. If you're a light sleeper you probably want to avoid the hotel altogether. I enjoyed sleeping with the door open and listening to the sound of the ocean, even when some heavy rollers came in and woke me up in the middle of the night.
The lanai and the pool offer front row seats to spinner dolphin activity, outriggers paddling, and sunsets. The pool is a saltwater pool that actually draws its water from the ocean. All pools should be like this; you won't reek of chlorine after your morning swim. The ocean breaks against the seawall bordering the pool and spills into it creating endless watching enjoyment.
The hotel provides beach towels, beach chairs, boogey-boards, and snorkeling equipment. We walked to restaurants at night, and came back poolside for drinks. There is a good continental breakfast served every morning with fresh fruit, bread, juices and coffee right by the pool. The managers are very friendly and accommodating, and I doubt you can find a cheaper oceanfront hotel anywhere else in Hawaii.

Pros:
- All Oceanfront
- Great Pool
- Good Kona Location
- View
- Beach Equipment provided

Cons:
- Light Sleepers beware
- The kitchenettes aren't great, stick with the regular room (have fridges)
- We switched rooms because our initial room (301?) had a mattress like a taco

We have since recommended Kona Tiki to friends and they enjoyed their stay as well.

Room Tip: Ask for a room as close to the pool as you can get.

Have read many of the reviews - agree with the four and five stars. Simple, family-style hotel. Manager greets you by name at the great continental/fruit breakfast - good coffee and juice. Clean and comfy. Yes the surf is loud - fantastic. Lots of cool geckos and birds - abundance of sea life at waters edge. Brackish little pool. Plenty of loaner beach stuff, loaner towels to take to beach all day. Down sides could be the parking (I never missed out on a space), and the road noise (if your hot-blooded like me and leave your front wondows open to allow the breeze to flow thru)
Overall - nice place I would go back to. If you want a resort - go to a resort

We were turned on to this hotel by family friends who have stayed there for many years. Last spring (March 2011) we went and it was the best vacation we have every had. What makes it a diamond, is not only its awesome location but its ability to welcome you as if it was a family cottage; no frills but full of great memories. You are in a prime location to take in shops and restaurants that are just down the road but far enough away that you are not inundated with tourist traps. Open markets are also nearby in opposite directions. Yes, the ocean waves are crashing but that's what makes it standout. You are one with the island without going too far from amenities. Rooms are not overly updated but are clean and have what you need. Continental breakfast was great! Expecting hardly nothing; we were pleasantly surprised. We had a kitchenette which proved to be a good idea for when you don't want to go anywhere. For a good full breakfast take a trip to The Coffee Shack in Captain Hook, HI it is worth the drive for the food and the incredible view off the highway. What Kona Tiki lacks in luxurious suites is more than made up for in the nature and people that surround you. It is friendly, incredibly relaxing and the view that others are paying hundreds of dollars to see off their balcony is what you see for a fraction of the cost. The tradition, when the sun sets, to gather and light the lamps (if you are back in time from your island excursions) is such a beautiful touch. I have stayed at all-inclusive and 4 star hotels in many destinations but leaving that all behind, (TV, phone and throngs of people jostling for tables or poolside space) proved to be the best decision we could have made. If you want to kick back quietly, grab a book and lay like broccoli this is the place to go. Book well in advance this is a well liked place.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the main street are preferred.

This place is awesome. Perfect location, the view is really nice. They have so many things they share too.... BBQ, Big Island books, maps, sunblock, flippers and masks... mostly things people have left behind. Room 106 and 206 are the only single rooms non-kitchen. 106 was pretty noisy in the morning, 206 is better in my opinion.

We stayed cool at night, and breakfast was ready every morning from 7-9 to fill our bellies. Internet and parking as well as breakfast are all included. Did not have issues with parking and if they run out of space they take care of moving vehicles for you.

All around friendly staff and owners.

Room Tip: 106 little loud in the morning if you want to sleep in.

We spent 14 days at the Kona Tiki, and wish we could have stayed longer. Wonderful location -- right on the ocean. Great couple that manages the facility (Michelle & Gary). They made the stay there just perfect. Nice continental breakfast with wonderful Kona coffee. We were on the 1st floor and enjoyed the view and the waves crashing on the shore. If you are a light sleeper, you may want to have some ear plugs just to be safe. Te pool was perfect and the rooms were exactly as advertised -- clean, and just what you need in Hawaii. We did not miss the TV or the telephone. We had a kitchenette, and prepared our dinners in our apartment. That really saved us some money. The hotel offers coolers, some snorkeling gear, maps, and ICE! You will need a car to visit all the places on the island, but you can walk to town from the hotel in about 15 minutes -- a nice walk.

Room Tip: We were glad we had a kitchenette. 1st floor is great (and you do not hear any of the other guests...
