Kanaloa at Kona
Reviewed March 25, 2007

My husband and I stayed at the Kanaloa at Kona Mar. 5-20, 2007 and we loved it! This was our third visit to both the island and Kanaloa. However, the first two stays we rented from Outrigger-3504 (2001) and 402 (2003) and this time we rented directly from the owner (1206). We enjoyed each stay on the island but this was the best. Our unit had 2 bedrooms (one in the loft), 2 bathrooms and 3 lanais. It was clean, modern and comfortable with lots of extras like books, videos, games, snorkel equipment, a golf set, beach mats and chairs. At night we would fall asleep listening to the waves crashing on the lava rocks and in the morning we could watch the sun come up over the mountains. From the bedroom lanai, I would relax reading a book and watching the ocean. As always the sunsets are spectacular viewed from the oceanside pool or by the golf course. We ate most of our meals on the lanai overlooking the golf course with the moutains in the background. Among the things we did were we went whale watching with Capt. McSweeney who is very informative about whales as he has studied them for over 30 years. On Sun. we attended the Kona Coast Chaplaincy held under a tent in front (oceanfront lawn) of the Kona Inn Shopping Village on Ali Drive -what a great message from the guest minister and beautiful singing by Rocky Galarza. Even the spinner dolphins put on a show for us. We went to the Puna Coast for the first time and swam in a natural hot tub (Ahalanui)-it was so warm and refreshing! We are looking forward to another visit to the island and will definitely stay at the Kanaloa at Kona!

I've been slacking on my reviews. Hubby and I stayed here October of 2006 and LOVED it!

Kanaloa is on 18 acres, overlooking Keauhou Bay. Ocean front units are 20 feet from the lava rock coastline and all units are fully furnished with full kitchens and washer and dryers. There are 3 pools and 2 tennis courts, for those who like a little action on vacation.

Our unit was originally a 2 bedroom with a loft, but the owner decided to have the smaller bedroom as storage, so it is now a one bedroom with a loft and 2 full bathrooms. We found this out as we were checking out.

We were in unit 3204. The front door was on the ground floor and when you opened the door, there was a stairway that led to the upstairs unit. The whole place was decorated very nicely. Island style, of course, but very nice.

It was perfect and beautiful. At the top of the stairs, the foyer was nicely decorated. Take a right and there was the closet where the stacked washer and dryer were. The owner also provided a styrofoam cooler, ice packs for it, extra towels and lawn chairs in the closet.
there was a one-use box of detergent provided, but I brought my own with me.

Walk past the closet to the bedroom. It's a small bedroom with a dresser, 2 nite stands and a bookcase with a tv. There was a walk-in closet with a safe.........and 2 sets of golf clubs! A mens set and a womens set. I don't golf, but hubby was damn excited!

The main bathroom had a long counter area with 2 sinks, a tub/shower and commode.

Walk down the hallway to the kitchen which was nice and big with granite counters and was stocked with coffee maker, espresso machine, microwave, side by side fridge, brand new stove, all the dishes and pots and pans you could need and a dishwasher. It was great!

The living room was furnished with dark, wicker furniture, a big flat screen tv with playstation and dvd player as well as nice leather recliner, tucked into a small alcove.
There were books, magazines, dvd movies and playstation games provided as well.

Our lanai was huge and had a wet bar with a small fridge, a couple lounge chairs and a big glass table with chairs that looked out over the bay. Acorss the way, you could see the Sheraton.

The loft was also furnished nicely with a couch and chaise lounge, as well as a desk to work (hahahaha) and another tv with a small stereo. There was also another full bathroom up there.

We loved it here. There are gas grills all over the property and we used them every night!

The best part was, after we would cook dinner, then breakfast in the morning, we would come back at the end of the day, and the dishes had been loaded into the dishwasher and washed! It made me feel special.

I read that the property is wireless, but have heard that some people have a hard time getting logged on. There is a community computer in the main pool house, but you have to use a credit card to pay for time. It was $10 for 30 minutes. It was perfect to print boarding passes, or to send a quick hello email back home.

We loved our condo and plan on going back, often. This was our first time staying in a condo and I loved being able to make my own meals and snacks and not have to rush to breakfast at a hotel restaurant.

The washer and dryer came in very handy after spending a few days on Maui and lugging all my dirty clothes to the Big Island.

TIP: The closest grocery store is KTA at the top of the hill, but there is a Safeway further down the road for those of you that have a Safeway Club Card. I found KTA to be very expensive.

Air conditioning is a separate fee...$15 a day. We went in October and we definitely needed it. Don’t scrimp on the a/c. There's nothing worse than being uncomfortable while on vacation.

Groceries are expensive, so don't be too shocked to pay 2bucks for a can of tuna. We ate breakfast and dinner at the condo every night. One dsay we drove to the volcano and used our cooler to put sandwiches in it for the ride there and back.

We are a family of four and needed a homebase for our trip on the Big Island-Kona side. We broke our 8 day trip to 3 in Hilo and 5 in Kona. It was a real pleasure to stay here. The spaciousness and cleanliness of the condo and all ammenities matched our requirements. We had an oceanfront and 2/2 (one king and two twins). We paid the extra for the air conditioning and was glad we did. It wasn't HOT, but warm and humid enough to appreciate coming into a cool room.
We used just about everything the condo had to offer. The wahser and dryer. The jacuzzi in the master suite. The lanai in the mornings for breakfast (a favorite time). Having a well stocked and full kitchen was a must. Even the two TV's(livingroom and master suite) came in handy one evening.
This property is beautiful in particular this condo ( it made our Kauai condo almost seem half rate) and was a good location for us. Most of our days were filled with sightseeing and activities and it was good to have a home to come to in the evenings. There is a good supermarket and drug store just up the hill.
We even had excellent help with arranging an unschedualed excursion one day by the activities desk.
While making our plans, my husbands parents brought out pictures of a trip they took in the 80's. Ends up they also stayed here at Kanaloa at Kona. We were as satisfied with our stay as they had been with theirs. It may also have gotten better with age.

Side note: we extensively used Wizard Pub. - Hawaii The Big Island Revealed and The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook ( for our Kauai leg of our trip)-- highly reccomend using them to help with every aspect of deciding where to stay, where to eat and how to spend your time on the islands. For example we found that you do not need an expensive tour to go to the top of Mauna Kea. There are free ranger lead tours that include going inside some of the observatories.

We stayed in condo 203 for the second time and had a wonderful vacation. This condo is very clean and has everything you could possible need. We booked through aloha condos and there were no surprises. It is in a quiet environment with lovely landscaping and the pool is very close and was never crowded.I would definetely recommend this condo. I also would recommend eating at LU LU's and trying their krabby kakes.

Just spent 4 nights Feb.2-6, 2007 at the Kanaioa. Chose this resort based on TI reviews. I was expecting a lot more. We were in unit 3503 which we were greeted with a musty old smell when opening the front door, worn carpet, and 1980's rattan decor. Our view off the balcony of the beautiful bay, granted, was fabulous. Newer fixtures in kitchen, but the electric stove top never got hot enough to get the water to boil. Our bedroom was up against the parking lot and entrance to complex...it was loud. They had a steam cleaner guy there working on the next unit our first night till almost 8pm...loud. The gardeners were up early and we heard all their conversations while trying to sleep in our bed. I agree, it is crucial to get a good unit at this resort. On a positive note, the pool along the ocean is beautiful. Also, this place is very popular among the seniors this time of year. The grounds are kept beautifully. We got good advice from the on site activity director. And there is a nice shopping center an easy drive from the condo complex. The sports grill restaurant has the BEST onion rings, and my husband tried the buffalo burger, not bad. Also, if your budget allows, definitely do a dinner at the Four Seasons and go on the volcano helicopter tour with Blue Hawaiian, that was our highlights on the island.

We got got back from a fabulous vacation in Big Island and Outrigger Kanaloa at Kona made this trip so pleasant for us!

Six of us (two elderly, two young kids and us) stayed in a 2bd 2ba suite (#603). For five nights we paid only $1200 because the fifth night was free. It is a fareway suite which means it is right on the golf course. THe suite is over 1000 sq ft, with a king size bed in the master bedroom and two twin beds in the 2nd bedroom. There were two large, covered lanais, one of which faces the golf course and has a huge table with six chairs (guess where we were having our dinners?). The master bathroom was huge with nice tiles and a walk-in shower which we love. The kitchen was also nicely tiled and has a breakfast bar. It has a rice cooker and many other handy kitchenwares. All we had to do was to get coolking oil, salt and food from Costco and we were in business!

The best things about this place was that it felt like home. There were over 20 books about Big Island, games for kids, beach towels, boogie boards, sand toys, .... you name it, right there in the closet for guests to use. My son goes right to the "Hawaiian Reef Fish" book after every snorkeling trip to find fish that he saw that day. My husband enjoyed reading about the history and language of the Hawaiian people.

The hotel is located 20 minutes from the Place of Refuge down south (which is a great snorkeling spot), 2 minutes from another great snorkeling bay (Kahalu'u beach park), and about 30-40 minutes from the more touristy Kohala up north (where expensive resorts stand between beautiful beachs and lava fields, no local homes to be seen). Right near the hotel is a quait little bay called Keauhou Bay. They have kayaks for rent there and we noticed msotly local people take their kids there to play. It is quite relaxing. We enjoy it there becuase we in general like local scenes more than touristy places.

The three swimming pools are relatively small and not like your big resort swimming pools. But my daughter enjoyed them very much.

The only draw back was that one of the five nights we were there, people started mowing the lawn on the golf course at 5:45 am, which bothered me a lot. I called the hotel and they said they have complained to the golf course (which is owned by a differnt company) but have no control over it. I decided that I would call the police if they do that again (wouldn't you?) but it never happened again.

Another drawback - central AC system costs additional $15 a day. We didn't need it when we were there though.

The owners of this unit kept a guest book in the suite and it was fun reading it. I really think the owners of this unit went out of their ways to make the guests feel welcome.

We just returned from our stay at Kanaloa, which was our 2nd stay there. Our 1st visit, back in 1997 was booked through Outrigger and our most recent was directly through the owner at the VRBO.com site. Both visits were really enjoyed by us. On this trip, our children had had a great time there, though much of our time was spent in other places of the island. We did spend some afternoon time at the pool and evening time at the lighted tennis courts. The grounds are well maintained and we slept with the sliding doors open so as to hear the sound of the ocean waves and get the breezes...noise was not a problem. The inlet right next to the condos were a perfect spot to watch surfers in the evening and look for sealife along the shoreline. I look forward to returning to the Big Island again and staying at Kanaloa at Kona a third time.
