“Great Stay on the Big Island”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

My family and I checked into a 2 bedroom oceanfront room with air conditioning. Our lanai was only about 30 feet from the ocean with a spectacular view. The room was well appointed, with every thing we needed. I should note that you must request air conditioning if this is an necessity. I believe that most of the condos are individually owned, so if you receive on that is not up to standard, just go to the front desk and request a new one. This happened to my in-laws, the moved du to an noisy air conditioner. We did not have a lot of interaction with the staff, but they were very friendly and helpful. Each unit has it's own covered parking spot, which makes getting into the car cooler. We will stay here again when we return.

Room Tip: Get the oceanfront...you're in Hawaii.

Traveling far away from home is always stressful...where do you stay? Which reveiws do you believe? I am here to tell you that I would stay here again in a heartbeat! Our condo was right next to the Ocean Pool. Our view was amazing. The accomodations were outstanding. We selected this place from a list an agent gave us...we ended up booking our whole trip on our own rather than through using the agent...room was still the same price but we saved over $700 on other things! The Outrigger exceeded our expectations-we only wished we stayed here the whole week rather than 3 nights...we moved up to Volcano to a VRBO (which was also very good) and we would have stayed the whole 2 weeks on this island rather than island hop if we had only known how great it was going to be!

I can not believe how quiet it was....there was no noise from any other rooms, the pool was almost deserted and the waves crashing on the lava rock was so amazing. Our beds were comfortable and the condo was clean. I enjoyed having laundary facilities as well as a safe-free of charge. We traveled with children and it was kid-friendly. My kids swam in the two pools for children (we did not see the adult only pool) and they played ping pong at the pool by the office. The grounds were neatly kept and beautiful.

We did not have any issues whatsoever and if I ever return to the Big Island I will request this room again. When I travel again, I will see if there is an Outrigger where we are headed...I will be a customer for life! Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for an ocean view!!!!

Kanaloa at Kona is a beautiful complex. The design is such that the ocean views are private and spectular. Their are three pool with one designated as an adult pool. When we visited there was a youth baseball tournament and the youth were allowed to take over the adult pool in the evening and the oceanside pool the next day. I feel the property should have contained them to the main pool as I seriously doubt they cared they were oceanside to play Marco Polo. Overall very clean, secure and beautiful. I would recommend it to a fellow traveler.

Room Tip: I would definitely recommend expanding your travel budget to include an ocean front room. It is so...

Thank you for your comments, I appologize about that incident regarding the pools. The main pool was closed due to an emergency treatment and the two other pools were open to everyone. Thank you again, and we are hopeful to see you on a return visit.

We came for our honeymoon and were wowed by the condo. Marble counter tops, rainfall shower, elegant island decor, a kitchen stocked with all appliances and gadgets, even snorkels, coolers, sunscreen, bug spray and binoculars for watching the dolphins and outrigger races. I would wager that 3104 is better than all the hotels on the strip in Kailua-Kona. The grounds are lush and immaculately maintained. They must have 20 gardeners, maintenance people and security guards on staff to keep it so lovely. The owners of the unit left a binder full of information that really helped us orient ourselves to the island, including nearby public beaches and restaurants. And truthfully the guidebook and maps they left on the coffee table made the trip. Much better than the Fodor's we brought with us. Once we opened the fridge and saw a complimentary six pack of local beer waiting for us after 18 hours of traveling we became lifelong fans. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on the Big Island after that.

My friend and I booked a condo here for a three night stay in May . The checkin was easy and the condo was lovely. We had a golf course view with a partial ocean view. I loved sitting on our lanai and having coffee in the morning listening to the birds and looking upon all the lush landscaping.
The unit was very clean and well maintained , quite spacious and well stocked with all you need.
The twin beds were very hard and not comfortable but the king bed in the master was fine.
The only bad thing I can say is we had to pay 26.00 per day for the key to run the a/c. And the A/c unit was inside the living room in a closet which made it very noisy if you were watching tv, which we did for about 15 minutes a day so it was not a big deal to us.
The pools are well kept though surprisingly small for a big complex , yet they were not crowded at all. Close to town , shopping and beaches so it was very convenient.

Room Tip: Don't be afraid to choose a golf course view its so tranquil and you can walk down to the ocean...

Sincerely appreciate the comments. Each unit in the complex is individually owned, and not all of them are equipped with air conditioning. The fee for the use of air conditioning is paid directly back to the owner to off set their unit’s electricity costs. At this time Kona has one of the World’s highest costs for electricity.
You are right that our location is convenient, yet off of any main roads. All types of shopping, variety of restaurants, and even movie theaters are 5 minutes away. We also have the best neighbors, Pacific Ocean, and a golf course. Thank you again for your comments.

We stayed three nights in a ground floor Fairway View one bedroom condo. The condo and facilities met our needs and generally were very good if a little tired. There was no air-conditioning, but then we came to Hawaii for the warm weather. The reception and tour staff were very good and the housekeeping responded very quickly to our one request. Other staff were friendly and polite. We used the pools, which are small, but good. Housekeeping service is an additional charge, which we did not require. The free BBQs in the pool areas were also very good. Unless you stay at the location all the time a car is necessary. There is a large supermarket in the nearby shopping centre and a couple of restaurants. Our only concern was that an air-conditioning unit for a condo above us was just outside our bathroom and bedroom window. It had not been a problem for the first two nights and we were unaware of its location. However, on the third night, the new guests above used the air-conditioner all evening. With all windows close [which is not great in the warm weather] we could still hear the loud unit. Sleep was very difficult. The morale of the story is to check the location of any external air-conditioning units in the garden near your condo when you check in. See if you can get a change if one is just outside your bedroom. As not all condos have air-conditioning this will not always be a problem. Despite this I would recommend this location as good value for money.

Room Tip: Check the location of external air-conditioning units

Thank you for your comments, the air conditioning units have a maximum decibel level requirement. We will do a decibel level check on all the air conditioning units.
It is extremely quiet here on property, there is no through traffic. Although buildings are spread out over 17 acres, sounds are amplified due to such quiet settings. You are correct that not all units are equipped with air conditioning.

We rented a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom partial ocean view condo for 5 nights. This was a repeat visit for us, having come in August 2004 for a family vacation. The condos are all individually decorated so all are different. I requested a partial ocean view for this trip as it was a bit less expensive. Actually, the view we got looked over the golf course to the ocean-so was a very nice view and looked like an ocean view to me- each night we saw amazing sunsets over the ocean from the Lanai and many birds were heard and seen around the property. As the golf course was closed, we found our location very peaceful and enjoyed quiet breakfasts on the lanai overlooking the water.

The grounds are beautifully maintained with flowers and trees everywhere and there are 3 pools- we used the ocean view and main pools. It was quiet and pleasant. You could easily hang out here for the day although we spent most of our time sight seeing.

The location is good for exploring the Big Island by car, we took day trips to Volcanoes National park one day (96 miles each way) and did a very nice 4 mile hike through a crater. Another day we went via Waimea to the Hawaiian Royal Tropical Gardens near Hilo (91 miles each way)- well worth the visit. There is a very good snorkelling beach 5 minutes away from the resort where you can swim over the coral which is very close to shore and see many fish and turtles right from shore..you can rent equipment and even a secure locker right on the beach at Keauhou Bay. Hint- wear a Tshirt to snorkel to avoid sunburn. Our other days were spent exploring the coast north (Hapuna beach-great swimming about 45 minutes away and the plantation town of Hawi near the end of the 270 was a nice lunch spot). Our final day we went south to the coffee plantation area. So perfect spot for a 5 day vacation.

The nearby Keauhou shopping center has a large supermarket with everything you need for eating in- we found the resort barbecues worked well and were not too busy. One night we went to Ray's on the Bay at the nearby Sheraton Kona resort- very nice fish dinner, great outdoor setting and you get to see Manta Ray's that come in at night to feed on plankton attracted by the lights- we booked a waterside table and enjoyed the experience. We also tried Sushi Shinosa in Kailua which was also good.

In terms of accomodations, we had 2 bedrooms, 2 baths. The decor/date of kitchen and bathrooms looked to be 1970s or 1980s- functional and very clean but not glamorous. Kitchen appliances were probably newer and worked fine. Toilet seemed to flush slowly, kitchen cupboards sounded like they might fall apart-but were ok. Each unit is different- ours had many interesting Japanese artifacts and art pieces. The internet and TV worked well- large new looking flat screen TV and wireless internet worked well. comfortable seating for 4 inside and out and many useful things provided such as beach chairs, clothes drying rack, washer/dryer, microwave, guidebooks.

There were a few broken items in our unit which I reported- a ceiling fan didn't work but was fixed. the same day. One of the vertical blinds and a lamp shade kept falling down and were fixed but the blind continued to fall down each time we tried to open or close it. The kitchen was well equipped all the dishes, good Tfal pans and utensils you need, although one half of the 4 sided toaster was broken and there was no kettle-but no problem as we could boil water in a pot.

One issue was that we had planned to request air conditioning which was advertised as available for an additional $25, but what I hadn't realized was that you had to request this on booking as only half the units have it available. It turned out to be ok, as we sat out on the lanai in the evening and the outdoor fan and the breeze made it bearable and by night time rooms were ok for sleeping, although my daughter found it a bit warm in the smaller bedroom.

All in all for the price we paid ($155 plus tax per night for a spacious 2 bedroom unit with great view) we thought this was good value and a great vacation.

Room Tip: If you want air conditioning, you must request upon booking. Prices vary with demand, so check on l...
