“Excellent stay at Kanaloa”
Reviewed April 1, 2013

We were upgraded to a 3 bedroom oceanfront condo for 5 nights. We rented through the outrigger website and had no problem. Our condo was extremely clean and updated. There was no need for airconditioning as the fans and the breeze through the windows was perfect. The grounds are very well maintained and the staff was helpful and welcoming. We liked having use of boogie boards and snorkel equipment. The pools and hot tubs were nice, but we wished they were open earlier. The location is great, close enough to Kona but without the traffic and congestion. You can walk along the beachfront trails and the marina is only a minutes walk. The best part was the price...extremely reasonable!

We spent 4 nights in the condo 2102. It was great, fully equiped kitchen, access to a BBQ and close to many activities we were planning to do. It can a little noisy because the neighbours are so close.

Room Tip: There is no A/C and no room service.

We'd hoped to stay at the Keauhou Outrigger, but it was closed. :(
We "settled" on this resort owing to it's proximity, tripadvisor reviews and Outrigger label attached to it (based on our previous stay at the Outrigger).

Positives:
We stayed in an oceanfront condo (as booked). It was well appointed and had just about everything you could ask for. The apartment was spacious. The lanai looking out at the bay was great. Kitchen was stocked..etc...the unit (3202) was in great shape and we thoroughly enjoyed it. If we return to Kona, we'll definitely consider this resort again.

Now (as always...) the hiccups. These are minor. They are the reason it's a 4 instead of a 5, but really, it's pretty stinkin' good.

1) We arrived at 6 PM in pouring rain (monsoon). The office was dark and the security was not at his post (he takes breaks, as he should, just our timing didn't work. It's getting dark, it's pouring, we've been traveling for ~18 hours from east coast US and we're greeted by a dark empty office with an outdoor phone that says who to call for check in. It was a bad first impression. That being said, the guard answered the phone promptly, was present within 3 minutes, and gave us all the preliminary info we needed to get in our unit. He told us we'd have to return and do the full paperwork and check in the next day, preferably in the afternoon. We we're traveling all day, so we did it two days later, but it was an item remaining in my to-do list even after check in. They give the security guard the ability to do 60% of the check in process, train the guy to finish it off for after hours check in.

Air-conditioning is an extra fee per day. We did not use it. We kept the lanai screen open, turned the fans on and listened to the surf. We were content with that. If you like to live in an ice-box, this will annoy you. Not an issue for us.

The people above us sounded like elephants on several occasions. This is one of those things you only notice when it happens though. It's a mild annoyance, but a pet peeve of mine. Had we been on the top unit though, we'd have had to climb/descend stairs every time we entered/ left.

So all things considered, this is a great roomy place to stay. There were only two of us, and if you have a family of four, this has to be a great economical place for you.

Room Tip: I've read on here it can be a gamble to get a good or bad unit. It all depends on the upkeep by...

This is a fantastic condo resort! This was our second time staying here and it was just as amazing as the first. The grounds are immaculate, seriously. The sunset views are amazing and the 3 pools are a great place to cool off after a long day of exploring the island. I suggest renting through the owners directly through vrbo or homeaway to ensure that you get the best deal and can choose a unit that fits your needs. We rented a 2BR unit this time and it was very spacious and had 3 lanais. I highly recommend this resort!

Our GPS was not able to find the exact location of this condo complex, but the night security guard was wonderful and drove up to the main road to lead us down to the complex. The rental office closes at 5 PM and you check in with security after hours. These are privately owned units and have some areas that need updating and some areas that are updated. We rented a one bedroom ocean view and it was worth every penny. The view of the bay from the lanai was the perfect and peaceful place to eat evening meals. Our unit had an updated new shower in the master bath. The oven/range was in need of updating and a little worn. There is no heating or air conditioning in the units and as a result the windows are most often open with the sounds of the ocean and local birds filtering in. There is a grocery store about 1/2 mile away. This is not a beach location for those who want to swim, but there is a lovely little harbor within about a 15 minute walk.

Room Tip: Pay the extra money and get an ocean view room, it is so beautiful.

Aloha from Kona,

Yes, it is tricky to find the property, we are not on one of the main roads. But, we are lucky to have two of the best neighbors, golf course on one side and Pacific ocean on the other. We have signage restrictions that do not allow us to put up signs along the main roads. Sorry to hear about the trouble you had in finding our location.

The resort has an excellent location and beautiful grounds. We used the ocean side pool and it was very clean and had lots of chairs and tables. Condo 1803 is in the best location within the resort and has a very private lanai.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom, oceanfront condo unit (the hotel is now closed). It had a lovely view (saw whales, sunsets right from our deck) and was nicely furnished. It does get hot and AC isn't included - we had to pay $25/day extra to use the AC - seems like a steep price and you might want to factor that into the cost. Also, housekeeping isn't included.
Overall, a very nice and convenient choice. One note, you might want to request a second floor unit as there is some sound transmission from upstairs to downstairs.

Room Tip: Second floor should be a little quieter. The oceanfront rooms are great!
