This place is fantastic. We lucked into staying here -- due to last-minute planning on our part, for just one night -- and it was a highlight of our trip. The rooms and grounds are beautiful and comfortable, and the location is great -- a 2 minute walk from snorkeling and surfing. Randy is the kind of welcoming, generous host you wish ran every hotel. We left wishing we could've stayed longer. If you're looking for somewhere to stay on the Kona coast, stop searching and book this place.

Great place to stay - super clean, nice rooms, sweet lanai, very friendly, great snorkeling just in front of the retreat. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars is there was a mixup with the reservation - but Randy went out of his way to rectify the situation and made sure we left happy. I'd happily go back and recommend the place to anyone.

We recently spent 11 days at The Big Island Retreat. Our wonderful hosts, Randy and Shannon, went out of their way to help us. The retreat was beautiful and right across the road from one of the best snorkelling beaches on the island, where we saw our first sea turtles. We would highly recommend this accommodation to anyone looking for a relaxed holiday with plenty to see and do close by. We will certainly come back again.

If you are looking to find a sweet, clean, and very well decorated space to live in for several days or longer, this just might be for you. We spent 5 days in Waikiki on business, then stayed here 5 days and spent the last 5 days at the Hapuna Prince. Each segment had great points, but my favorite of them all was the Big Island Retreat. This Guest Inn is comprised of small but beautifully appointed rooms - and all you have to do is stay tidy and you are in for a very relaxing stay. Your room has a fridge, coffee maker and you can use the communal outdoor bbq area to cook if you like. Restaurants and grocery stores are very close by as well. Keep in mind all utensils, and pots are newer, ready, and clean for your use. These folks take great care of the place and their visitors.

Let's see...the bed was lovely - comfy and situated nicely along a bank of windows that let the tradewinds blow over us as we slept to the sound of the crashing waves. There was also an overhead fan and a floor fan, which kept the air moving. No A/C but didn't need it.

The balcony outside proved to be a perfect place for two chairs and a table to hold our glasses of wine and fruit and cheese plate. It literally looks out over the Pacific and the sun sets right there in front of you.

The Inn is off the main road about three layers back - and although a little challenging to find initially, it is what makes it a perfect location. Close to the beach but off the road as not to hear the road noise. There are neighbors so you may hear a dog barking occasionally, but no matter.

And as if that was not enough, Randy and his wife allowed us to borrow beach chairs, beach towels, and a beach umbrella during our entire stay. I cannot think of a single need that went un-met.

So, if you want to a little place, tucked away yet steps from the beach, without the noise of hotel carts cruising by your room and the feel of home - this might be a great option for you. Wishing you much Aloha on your trip!

Room Tip: The Aloha Room is on a single level (just one small step up to the entry) but is one of the smaller...

We stayed for four nights at the Big Island Retreat - what a great place. Difficult to find, yes, but the street is directly opposite the little blue and white church, just where the road lines start (or end, depending on which way you are going) to zigzag (no idea why - beach warning?) Just continue up winding around until you get to the sign. Not a proper bed and breakfast but they provide coffee, granola and fruit along with some lovely macadamia candies, and if you like to cook your own, it's terrific - there's a fridge and toaster oven in the room, and a microwave and gas grill available communally. We had the oceanview room - two floors, neat as a pin and just as advertised, quality furnishings. Sleeping and restroom are upstairs - just FYI in case you have mobility issues. I was having back spasms for some reason - very unusual - but could manage the stairs slowly. Nearby shopping center has a supermarket and an L&L Hawaiian BBQ which were both very useful, and surprisingly good. We also had takeout from the sushi restaurant there - pricey but excellent. Be sure to try Da Poke Shack nearby - terrific!

The place is a little hard to find but Randy was on the phone with me and went with a flash light to the main road to make sure I find the entrance although it was getting dark when I arrived.
I felt already comfortable when we entered the house. In the ground floor there's a small garden with little fountains and besides is a corner where the guests can meet and talk or just sit around. My room was on the first floor and it was neatly furnished, big enough to unpack a big suitcase and still live in a tidy room, had an open kitchen, a small bathroom and a balcony facing towards the sea. I loved it on first sight.
Gigi (who runs the place all-year, also when the owners aren't there) spent quite some time discussing with me my planned trips on Big Island and other islands of Hawaii and gave me excellent recommendations.
I also like the fact that there's an open kitchen/dining room in the middle of the premises where I met other guests when I came home and they ate dinner.
All together a good place to spend some relaxed days with friendly support whenever it's needed. I would definitely come back.

Room Tip: The Seaside Room has a nice balcony, big enough for 2 and one hears the waves all day and night long...

We just spent 11 days at BIR. We had an amazing time. The Seaside Room exceeded our expectations with a comfy king size bed, kitchen amenities, lots of space, exceptionally clean and a large Lanai with a great view. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and waking to birds chirping. Randy, Shannon and Gigi provided lots of personal service to make our stay even better. We felt like family by the time we left. Close to great surfing and superior snorkelling BIR is an amazing value and truly a Big Island gem. We will stay here next time we visit this beautiful island!
