“Loved this bed and breakfast”
Reviewed March 31, 2008

We stayed three nights at this exotic bed and breakfast. The innkeepers bent over backwards to ensure our stay was pleasurable. The accomodations were clean and the bed was very comfortable. The breakfasts were elegant, healthy and delicious. It's location near the entrance to Joshua Tree was very convenient.

We had given up on B&B's--meager breakfasts, creaky floors, chintzy decor--but this one is exceptional. To begin, the grounds are like a little oasis in the desert, with a ring of tall palms to keep the place cool. We stayed in the Museum Room a little away from the main courtyard (part of a two-unit cottage), which due to its stone walls stayed cool during the day. Private (with its own bath) and nicely appointed, with a skylight directly over the bed. We enjoyed petting Sammy, one of the two friendly dogs belonging to the owners. The breakfast was divine--fresh fruit, a kind of fritatta with sausage, cranberries, and melty cheese, and perfectly toasted English muffins. We definitely plan to book here the next time we come to Joshua Tree National Park.

Roughley is very cute and very well located for a trip to JTNP. My husband and I spent the past weekend there and were quite happy with the stay. We stayed in the Sunset Room, which is very cute -- my only complaint is that it lacked a dresser and as I love to unpack I was relegated to the bedside table. I did like staying in a stand-alone structure, although the main house was very nice (at least what I saw of it from the dining room). I had limited interaction with the owners, but they seemed very friendly and hospitable. The town itself isn't much to speak of and I preferred the town of Joshua Tree, as it seemed to have a bit more going on in terms of restaurants and night life -- but, again, Roughley is so well located for touring JTNP and so charming I would def. stay there again were I to return to the park.

ps. The place is much cuter than it looks from the photos on its website (not that it doesn't look cute but it was much better appointed than we were expecting).

My husband and I spent 7 nights at Roughley Manor for our winter break and did we love it ! We had the Sunset room which is a 1-room cabin just outside the gardens of the property with the desert stretching outside our door and some amazing sunrises. We enjoyed the spotless, comfy and very quiet room and the delicious breakfast prepared by Gary. The soothing call of the owl, the crazy coyotes in the morning, the endless sky and the stars above and our many hikes in the wonderful Joshua Tree NP - we loved it all.
Roughley Manor is very special and the owners keep the spirit and the history of this place alive.

I booked last minute, the night before in fact and was lucky enough to find Gary and Jan ( the Innkeepers) had one room available and when we got there.. my one word to describe the place is 'WOW'... It was beautiful.
* The location (backing onto the desert) was quiet and peaceful.
* The gardens were prefect for relaxing.
* The owners were so friendly and helpful (we locked ourselves out and had to get them up late at night to enable us to get back in., they were fantastic about it)
* The food was top class and served with style.
* The rooms.. styled and decorated by the owners, wouldn't look out of place in top London or LA hotels.. they were delightful.
* The beds!!! .... best sleep i've had in years... both myself and my girlfriend were very impressed.
* The skies were clear and an abundance of stars lit up the sky.

So Overall, Roughly Manor is without doubt an exceptional B&B and is highly recommended to all.
Thank you Gary and Jan for making our stay, one to remember. I have told my sister and other family members back home in the UK about you and i'm sure you will be getting visits soon.
Myself and Jess will certianly be coming back for another stay.

Nick (Leicester, UK) currently staying in LA until May.

Although the Roughley Manor is slightly outside the main ribbon of 29 Palms, its well worth the extra 5 minutes drive. The Museum Room, where we stayed, was a well laid out mini-suite with a kitchenette and sitting area with comfy armchairs, TV and fireplace. The bed was fantastically comfortable and beautifully co-ordinated. The bathroom was warm, and boasted all the comforts of home.
The owners and their staff are incredibly welcoming - and whoever did the cooking, it was superb! Breakfast was a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds, and there were fresh baked cookies in the afternoon.
Roughley Manor is well situated for anyone who wants to visit the Joshua Tree National Park - but their resident owls and hummingbirds meant that we didn't have to go far to see wildlife.
I would definately recommend this hotel to anyone.

We found this place by chance and had a lovely stay there - great food! Breakfasts were so filling we only had one other meal during our stay. Gary and Jan were very helpful about recommendations and finding grocery stores (there's a kitchenette in each suite) and we enjoyed walking with the dogs. We were also able to use the inn's laundry facilities, which was a bonus! We will definitely stay there again. It's a great base for exploring Joshua Tree National Park.

  • Liked — Charming and full accommodations
  • Disliked — No bathtub in our suite - would have liked to have been able to soak after horseback riding
