Interesting to wander through the grounds of the old abbey (you can't visit the new one). They also had a little museum dedicated to the brewing of the famous Orval beer.

The abbey is well worth a visit considering the historical significance of the abbey and the effect that it had on the area and region.

The famous Orval Trappist beer is also brewed here although it is not possible to visit the brewery itself nor the current modern abbey.

For a look into the history of the abbey it is well worth the time.

Was not very impressed with the shop though. While we were visiting there were several tour groups and the shop was quite busy. There was however only one person on duty to sell all the goods, beer and tickets for the visit.
We wanted to buy some beers to take home and after about 30 minutes we were still waiting to be helped with several people simply pushing into the queue and being helped. Needless to say, we decided to get the beer from somewhere else.

I visited Orval abbey twice as part of a tour inspired by Trappist beers.
You can't really visit the brewery, but it doesn't really matter because the grounds of the abbey are so beautiful and large to warrant a visit on their own. I love them.
You can visit the ruins of the previous abbey, which was burnt down centuries ago. There are explanations about the buildings that make it come to life a bit.
There is no contact with the monks since this is a trappist monastery and as such it has strict rules: however, you can peek into the main courtyard and look at its massive 1920s church and cloister. On selected times, you can access the church
There are also a museum with art objects from the past, maquettes of the Abbey in the century and a more recent and very stylish mini museum about Orval beer itself.

You can buy the Orval products at the excellent abbey store and stay for the night if you book ahead; recently, a sort of 'official cafe' was opened on the same street, so you can sample Orval beer and Belgian cuisine.

we drove there and spend time walking around and taking pictures.
the part you can visit is only the old part, but this is very beautiful with the old walls and all that. there is also a museum underneath one building.
shame that the beer and cheese tasting is in a modern building a few hundred meters away. they should have put in some effort to make this a bit more closer to the abbey in terms of style and decoration.
