Orval was definitely worth a visit. It was interesting to step back into this abbey, which is now as well known because it is one of only eight abbeys in the world that produce trappist beer. Well organized. I found the prices at the gift shop and for the beer, etc. to be reasonable.

Orval is probably best known to most people as one of the handful of genuine Trappist beers brewed in Belgium, but this is arguably not the main reason to pay the Abbey a visit. In fact, the new Abbey - where the monks live, and where the beer and cheese are made, is not part of the visit, which instead covers the extensive garden and ruins of the older Abbey - so don't turn up expecting free food and drink!

We visited the part of the abbey which is opend to the public. During the visit, we discovered the old abbey ruins, the garden with medical plants and the building where a lot of detailed information about the Orval beer (made by priest who are in the abbey). We saw also a lot of artefacts/paintings,... about the abbey and the way it has changed, been destroyed, been rebuilt throughout the years. Quite interesting to see how the building changed. On the day of our visit, a lot of people were visiting this place which is very inspiring, calm and relaxing.
We had a lunch in a restaurant (outside the abbey, but which use/serve the cheese and the beer produced by the priests) and it was very good and full of people who enjoyed their food and their drinks.

A fascinating mix of ruined abbey, newly built monastery and a beer and cheese made by the monks

Ancient ruins of the abbey are lovely. The feeling of peace and serenity are overwhelming. This history is apparent.
