“Its the little things that make this place so wonderful!”
Reviewed February 6, 2013

-The easy reservations and quick response to our questions pre-arrival
-The cab waiting for us at the train station
-The smile and personal greeting as we arrived
-The welcome champagne drink as the week, hotel, and ski area were explained to us
-The hotel is happy to provide you the lift ticket directly
-The afternoon soup and sweets buffet after skiing
-The staff didn't walk by a pillow in the lovely public area without re-fluffing it
-The quick, efficient, transparent way the staff cleaned up after a guest and prepared the cozy sitting area for the next
-The free (one-time) waxing and edge sharpening of our skis on arrival, having us ready for the week
-The breakfast early the day we left (before the kitchen officially opened)
-In the public washrooms; no electric hand drier or automated paper dispensers, but folded hand towels
-The heated racks for boots in the ski room, so easy and comfortable putting on warm boots in the morning
-An amazing spa area for a modestly sized hotel, massage (we each took two, got us back on the slopes with a smile), steam, sauna, relaxation area, etc...
-No cell phones in the dining room, how refreshing!
-Free wifi in the public area
-The heated tile floor in the bathroom in the rooms
-20 meters from the front door to the bottom of a main area lift (one of the lifts in the White Ring)
-30 meters to the free area ski bus to get you anywhere else you want to go
-The "art-work" in our bedroom as one day the duvets were turned into a heart and the PJs turned into a butterfly
-Each evening's "thought for the day" and the nightly sweets
-Nightly many-course meals (outstanding!) paired with a selection of a red and a white wine
-A range of ~10 different oils for the nightly salad bar
-Breakfast! lots of choices, eggs, meats, cheeses, fruit, cereal, yogurt, breads
-A range of ~8 different jams for the morning bread
-The staff... everyone who served us from breakfast thru dinner were friendly, warm, and smiling
-The skiing!

A few comments about Zurs:
-quiet small village, we never ventured out at night as the evening meals and visiting with the other hotel guests (almost one big happy family by the end of the week) were wonderful, and staying in a very pleasant choice, but if you must have nightlife then Lech or St Anton likely better choices. The skiing was great, the views incredible. The on-line reviews we read about the area before our arrival had suggested that expert skiers would be disappointed, but beginners thru intermediates very happy. We disagree somewhat... plenty of off-piste challenges to keep the expert happy (but very few black diamond pistes), and we tried to imagine a beginner here (mentally coming back for our next trip, but with beginner friends)... they would be very challenged and not that pleased. Yes, lots and lots of blue slopes (green slopes for the American readers) but these would be o.k. for a decent novice, a true beginner would be overwhelmed.

A few comments about previous reviews:
-some had overstated the distance from the hotel to the lifts and/or the bus stop.. truly, you walk across the driveway, past one small house (holding the Milchbar) and you are on the snow and at the lift.

-one review had not been a fan of the Chinese Fondue.. ours was many perfectly lean pieces of beef, pork, chicken, and veal...cooked in the hot water pot, then dipped in one of 5 different flavorful sauces. After the meats gone, the hot water is combined with sherry to make a tasty meat broth soup. All this with baked potatoes and fries (jacketed potatoes and chips for the English readers) and a pickled relish plate. Tasty!

Only problem with this place? It's TOO far from our home (west coast USA) and not sure when or if we will return. But absolutely fond memories and you too will enjoy it if you go.

I travelled with my daughter and from the moment we arrived, after rather a tedious Crystal transfer, we were made very welcome by the lovely Schneider family. As we were late arriving, the kitchen was closed and we explained that we had not eaten much at all since breakfast time, having travelled all the way from Scotland. Barbara vy kindly handed us a very welcome glass of rosé sparkling wine and Sabrina, her daughter had no hesitation in personally bringing us a platter of assorted cheeses and cold meat along with some bread. They allowed us to register the following morning.
The food was exceptional. I quite a gluten-free diet and this was very well catered for without any fuss.
Kata, our Hungarian waitress was charming and had a lovely sense of humour.
The spa area was most welcome after a whole day's skiing and the one massage I had was superb.
The heated boot room and ski storage area were excellent.
Zurs is a very pretty village and very quiet. Not where you'd go if you wanted a lot of nightlife but this suites us fine.
The skiing was fantastic! You could be skiing within just over 5 minutes of leaving the hotel and the uplift across the entire region is first-class. We skied almost every run on the piste map!
We had plenty of fresh powder snow so were very lucky and the scenery was absolutely magnificent.
Our room was very comfortable (room 225) and had the most wardrobe space we have ever had. My daughter enjoyed the Milka chocolate provided every night (but I was too full after the wonderful dinner)!.We even had bathroom scales (!) and a good hair dryer.
We would love to go back.....but would need to find another last-minute deal!
Great place! Don't hesitate. You certainly won't regret it!

Fantastic hotel, fantastic staff, fantastic food, fantastic location. From the moment we arrived after a terrible Crystal Ski transfer we were looked after so well by the Schneider family who took our bags from us and told us to go and relax over dinner. Nothing was ever a problem for any of the brilliant staff, when my skis went missing Barbara came to the rescue. We will be returning to the Erzberg.

this is our family's favourite holiday experience. the schneider family could not make us more welcome, and the comfort and service is excellent. the food is even better this year, and we gave it 5 stars last year. the rooms are great, with new bathrooms, and everyone had a great view either up or down the valley. we hope they will have room for us next year!

From booking the hotel all the way to checking out, everything was superb.

Convenience: A 1-2 minute walk to one of the main ski lifts in Zurs. A 2-3 minute walk to the bus stop (comes every 10 minutes or so) which takes you into Lech. Parking right at the hotel or if you want covered parking, that is available as well. In the next building, amazing vanilla lattes at the hip Milchebar cafe.

Service: The hotel prints ski passes, enrolls your kids in ski school, & lines up private instructors. Sabrina (daughter) is very knowledgable and offers nearly 5 star concierge service. When our daughter needed an ice pack, the owner delivered one direct to the room. When we checked out, they insisted on cleaning the snow off of our car themselves.

Dining: The servers were very friendly and accommodating. The six course dinners got a bit lengthy with small children but we knew that this was part of the half board that most of the nice hotels in this ski resort require. They were willing to cook simple kid friendly options at request. Also, the nice thing about half board is that you don't have to put any thought into dinner reservations and there was a great salad bar as the first course every evening. Breakfast was excellent, we were so pleased that the scrambled eggs were cooked through and not runny like usual at most euro hotels.

Experience: We watched a spectacular fireworks display from the hotel terrace on New Year's Day. (Also a small display on New Year's Eve as well.) Most of the guests at the hotel were very friendly and open to engaging in conversation. The owner seemed to give our kids a chocolate every time he had a chance! I think the warmth of the hotel owners must permeate the place.

The only complaint was that the bed mattress was a bit too firm for my husband but I think this is very typical of beds in European hotels. We had a nice family room (2 adults, 3 children) which is also tricky to find in most hotels. Clean room, modern bathroom, cozy common area & bar. Great ski and boot room, heated boots in the morning! Overall, a great first impression of skiing in Austria. We highly recommend this hotel!

About the Ski Resort: For novice skiers, the blue runs in Zurs are a bit on the steep & narrow side whereas in Lech & Oberlech ski area, the blues are gentler and wider. But the Zurs runs are also less crowded and the village is charming in a very understated and peaceful way. This is a service oriented resort. From heated chairlifts to workers who help small children onto the lifts, it's a vastly improved skiing experience from Switzerland (where we usually ski) and more comparable to the nice ski resorts in the USA.

It is not often that you see a hotel on trip advisor with such impeccable ratings. I can confirm that the rating of this hotel is entirely justified and well-deserved.

Everything one could ask… very clean and aesthetically pleasing, friendly efficient staff, quiet, good facilities, excellent food and a perfect location. We were so well looked after from the moment we arrived (actually, even prior to that) to the very moment of leaving that we began joking about it - really, 90 seconds to have a light-bulb changed in the lounge. Just because it was daylight! : )

I cannot praise the hotel and everyone their highly enough and in case you think I'm just one of those easily pleased people, check out my review of the truly dreadful Palm Beach in Gran Canaria - who should send their management team here to learn the proper way to look after guests.
