“Very friendly”
Reviewed September 6, 2008

Just returned from a week long stay in the Gansleit. We all found this hotel to be very friendly spotlessly clean and just right for us. The owners Rosi and Steve and their family are very hospitable and go out of their way to help you enjoy your stay. The home cooked Austrian food was absolutely delicious ( specially cooked by Rosi and her mum Anni!) . There was always a choice of 3 main courses (2 meat and 1 vegetarian.) Our room was ideal for a family of 3 or 4 as there were 2 seperate sleeping areas . The wellness facilities were fab we really enjoyed the sauna, steam room and also the gym . We loved the cosy friendly atmosphere of this hotel . Rosi and Steves hospitality was second to none and we would definately stay there again!

Just got back from a week at the Gansleit and really enjoyed everything about it. I can't believe the reviews that complained about small portions at dinner- how much do these people normally eat! Four courses at dinner including the salad buffet is surely enough for anyone. The food is home cooked and very tasty and they provided a good vegetarian alternative for our vegetarian son who is used to scant respect in this regard in many European hotels. The rooms were spotlessly clean, comfortable and had a great view.

Soll is a lovely village base for Alpine walking. We also did trips to Salzburg and Berchtesgarden which are both highly recommended. All in all a lovely hotel, immaculately kept, to which we would definitely return.

  • Liked — Excellent home-cooked food
  • Disliked — Hard to think of anything really! Although the pillows were too soft!

The Gansleit is a typical Austrian family-run hotel for people who like contact with the owners/other guests and don’t mind sticking to dining-regulations, for example, where exactly you have to sit for the meals and with whom to share the table. Evening meals were tasty and well-presented but very small amounts and strictly limited. For example, if you asked for mustard for your sausage, you got exactly one squirt of mustard on you plate. For the next sausage you had to ask the waitress again… Breakfast buffet was fine, although somewhat limited, possibly due to the size of the hotel (very small amounts of cheese/ham, one jug of tea or coffee per person, only “white” rolls).

Rooms were fine for a 3-star-standard, a somewhat peculiar mixture of classic hotel furniture and rustic Austrian style. Only very minor faults (slight signs of wear and tear), cleanliness was impeccable. We enjoyed the large (shared) balcony with a view of the Kaiser-mountains.

Owner Steven (an Englishman) has a sense of humor but sometimes lacks sensitivity when dealing with guests. He turned out to be very knowledgeable and helpful in planning excursions. If you like a hotel atmosphere which offers intimacy rather than privacy, the Gansleit, like many other Austrian family-run hotels, might be just right. We found that altogether it was a positive experience, especially because we booked for a very good last-minute rate. However, I wouldn't rate it "above average", hence only three stars out of five.

  • Liked — The location (mountains), very nice chalet-style house, large balcony
  • Disliked — Small portions at dinner, atmosphere too intimate and regimented for my taste

Stayed for a week in May. Very disappointed with the hotel despite some previous good reviews.

Bad Points:
- First day we sat down for evening meal, we were seated opposite a couple. We were told that we had to stay in the same seats for the whole week. Imagine seating with a boring couple for a week!
- Evening meal - served clear soup every single day for 6 days on the trot. Although they are different kinds of soup every day, but just seeing a bowl of clear soup is just so off putting.
Main course - have a choice of three but they are all small portions. Good if you are on a strict diet. Their website says offering large buffet salad and desserts buffet. We only saw salad 3 times in the week and of limited choice. The desserts buffet only once and consisted of three different cakes. Overall, very disappointed with evening meals. The drinks are the same standard as 4 star hotel price wise, with beer at 3.50 euros and tap water at one euro.
- Rooms - Low light bulbs in dark room which makes it uncomfortable for reading. Bed with very basic uncomfortable mattress. Some noise from motorway traffic so not a good idea opening windows.

Good Points:
- Breakfast - plenty of bread with some home made. No cooked breakfast but we were asked if we wanted a boiled egg. Croissants were laid out once. It would be a good idea if the croissants were available every day.
- Owner Steve is very friendly and helpful.
- Residence toilet is very clean
- Barbeque was offered once a week, hooray no soup for starter!

We were so disappointed with this hotel, we nearly moved out after two days but decided to stick it in, but never again.
