We researched the hotel before our skiing trip at the end of March 2012 and can only reiterate what others say about the hotel. It is truly family run with everyone 'hands on' in making the guests happy and comfortable. Very informal and light hearted and guests made to feel very welcome. The rooms are smallish and quite basic but warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The dining area is cosy with Tyrolean decor and lots of warm wood everywhere. Fantastic atmosphere and wonderful home cooking way above restaurant standard. Well done and thank you Anna & Rosie! Thanks also to Steve for all his advice and to Hans for keeping us topped up with drinks.
The wellness room too is beautiful with steam room and sauna and comfortable relaxing loungers to cool down afterwards and take in the views of the surrounding mountains.
Soll itself is much smaller than we thought and at the end of March very quiet especially at night but as the hotel was so inviting it was preferable to stay in anyway.
The ski bus stops directly outside the hotel and there are a couple of pickups in the morning and returns at night. The hotel has a storage area for skis and boots but we left ours each night at the ski shop just next to the Gondola. We thought this really worthwhile at 2 euros a day and it meant not having to 'lug' the gear backwards and forwards. Especially useful if you want a later start or earlier finish to the skiing when the buses are not running. That way you can walk back to the hotel in about 15 mins or stop for a drink somewhere.
With regard to skiing , as early and somewhat nervous intermediates Soll turned out not to be the best choice for us, as there were only a few blue runs directly from the Gondola with the majority of others only reachable via at least a stretch of red. (In Austria there are no green runs - just Blue, Red and Black) We took a taxi to Scheffau a short distance away for 12 euros and this was much better for our level of intermediate skiing with lots of blues.
We hired our skis and boots from 'Fun and Snow' in the village and found the staff extremely helpful. The tour operators will arrange this for you but we did it ourselves online at a 20% discount and also avoided a credit card charge fee which the tour operators levy. Don't worry if you are unsure of boot size as regardless of what size you say you are they will measure your feet to make sure.
If you fancy a day free of skiing as we did there are several lovely valley walks in beautiful countryside.
Would highly recommend the hotel and would certainly return there as my first choice if visiting Soll again.
