“Cheap & Cheerful”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

We stayed here in January 2012, loved the ski resort so much we came back in 2013 and stayed in the same chalet; it is about a 15 minute walk to the gondola and Stoll ski hire, or you can catch the bus from the top of the street (we tended to walk to warm the muscles up!).

Room are basic, could do with updating/decorating. BUT REMEMBER, you're paying for one of the cheapest places to stay in Soll so don't go expecting a 3-4 star hotel! Beds are comfortable, clean and there is plenty of hot water to warm you up after a day on the slopes which is all you need to be honest. We had room No. 1 which is at the top of the stairs and has a bath with low-level shower attachment.

The chalet hosts weren't as chatty this year compared to last year, but they did their job; they seemed to appear to serve your food then run away to hide in the kitchen! The food was much better in comparison to last year; a 3 course meal every night with wine, well done to the Chef! They would do a daily clean of your room if you wanted them to, or just leave your bin outside and they'd leave it alone. They also do a mid-week towel change.

I would stay here again because it's about the cheapest accommodation we could find in Soll and for what you pay for, the rooms are fine. It's not luxurious, it's not modern & fancy, but it serves a purpose.

Room Tip: No. 1 - Top of the stairs & faces the front, occasionally hear heavy-footed people coming back a...

We have just returned from Christmas week at Chalet Mounty, currently being run by Crystal. All in all we have had a fabulous week with the skiing, the après-ski, the accommodation and food, and the people we have met. You get what you pay for is what we always say and at less than £500 each for the week, we found it a very good deal given that it was Christmas week. But it has to be said that some of the Crystal marketing bumpf for their Chalet holidays (and Christmas package) was perhaps a little ambitious and overstated!! For example there was none of the following, as promised; 'free-flowing' wine on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, sparkling wine and mince pies at midnight on Christmas Eve and smoked salmon at breakfast on Christmas Day...and when asked, the chalet supervisor insisted that the information displayed on their website was ‘wrong’ but reluctantly, under pressure from other guests, she gave in to providing some additional wine on Christmas Day after dinner. Nevertheless, Prosecco and Bucks Fizz on Christmas morning was provided and was gratefully guzzled! There was free mulled wine some days at 4.30pm and the food throughout the week was delicious and the portions were sufficient. It's the first time we have been in a chalet holiday where evening meals have been served pre-portioned on plates with no pre-starter bread rolls and butter or après-dinner cheese and biscuits, but we survived!! The quality of the meals made up for it, and the wine did flow throughout dinner service. Breakfast was adequate with a cooked option and cereals etc. but oddly on some mornings, there were no rolls, just bits of old dry rolls sliced up. There was no sliced bread at all and no toaster (?!!!), and, crucially, no hot chocolate!!! Take your own guys! Also, breakfast is only served til 8.30am which we thought was just a tad too early. The home-made afternoon cakes were amazing and worth getting back for! The chalet has a dining room which really is far too ‘cosy’ for the number of guests and we were tightly lodged-in in the corner with meals having to be passed down the long tables, but the atmosphere was still bubbly and lively. There was also a lounge and bar area (drinks were a bit pricey for a chalet in our opinion) and the guests mingled after dinner which made the week very sociable. Some of the guests kindly put some hard work into creating a quiz for us which was great fun and much welcomed in-house entertainment. The rooms are simply furnished, clean and comfortable, with lovely views - no complaints there at all, although larger bath towels would have been welcomed...again, pack your own if you’re fussy. There is no boot/ski room in the chalet but we left ours up at the Stoll Ski Hire shop for 8 euros for the week. This is not next to the gondola, you have to get off the bus, get your boots and skis/boards then wait for another bus; all time consuming. We also didn’t see stated anywhere in the literature was that there is a 20 euro deposit for your room key so be prepared for that. Wi-fi...there seemed to be some confusion over this with guests being told either that there ‘is no wi-fi’ or the staff didn’t know the code and it was the ‘Crystal network’ to which guests were not allowed access. And that was that, end of discussion! But we could see the wi-fi router listed on our phones and iPad and were sure we had seen there was wi-fi availability stated in the brochure. Hence, there were a lot of disgruntled guests who had brought laptops, Kindles and iPads but when we came back from skiing on the second day, the code had appeared on the noticeboard. We heard another guest had escalated it to a higher level than the supervisor in the chalet, who was pleasant and efficient enough but perhaps a little too ‘corporate’ rather than customer service / hospitality focused and could have done more, especially as she DID actually have the code. They want you to have the ‘home-from-home’ holiday experience and these kinds of issues make the difference, but it was sorted and the end result was lots of happy kids/teens and adults! The skiing was awesome and there is enough to keep you occupied all week; with several interlinking ski areas. But, be warned, the ski back to Soll is tricky and the piste map is poor, with bad signage on the mountain too. You have to ski down to Brixen and up and down to Hopfgarten to get the gondola back up to Hohe Salve, then climb a steep slope behind a restaurant to get to the gondola to take you back down to Soll (if you don’t want to ski down a red). And when they say the lifts close at 4pm, they close at 4pm, no excuses or help to get back! If you do end up at another resort (such as Ellmau or Going) and can’t face the long run back across, it’s about 22 euros for a taxi back and about 3-4 euros for the bus back from Scheffau (it’s not included in the ski pass). The skiing ability is really for late intermediates/advanced with a lot of red runs, and even the blue runs are quite tough in places. The resort of Soll itself has an array of shops, bars and restaurants but not a huge amount. There are some late night bars/clubs for those who still have energy left! Lastly, our thanks go to the super staff at the Mounty who made our week complete...Luke, the talented young chef, Laura who was always so sweet and smiling; nothing was too much trouble, and Flora, Ashley and Tamsin. Thanks guys for your tireless enthusiasm, hard work, good humour and great service in your first week, we hope you enjoy the rest of your season in Soll!

Room Tip: Wi-Fi works up to the first floor so if you want wi-fi in your room go for the lower numbered rooms...

Stayed back in Feburay with kids and another family, terrible service from the girls who we nicknamed, smiler and misserable and not intrested. Boys serving were slightly better. Shame really as we have stayed with Crystal many times before and took some friends with us this time, there first and probally last with Crystals. We didnt find the rooms as bad as others have but the service and attitude of the staff let it down totally. Wes the crystal manager however was great.
love soll but not with Crystal.....

Having read the previous report we went with low expectations. Thankfully, our experience could not have been more different. Having skied for over 20 years, we have experienced the best and worst of ski chalets. This one would rate in the pretty good camp. Gap year staff, the norm, all very friendly, curtious and happy to help. The food was good, reasonable portion sizes and always hot. The rooms may be tired, but compared to some French chalets I have stayed in, they are well proportioned, good storage space, the beds were comfy and the shower was hot and welcome after a day on he slopes. Ski welt is excellent but Sol is not for beginners or early intermediates like my children. Stay in Scheffau or Ellmau for more easy safe piste.

We have just returned from a week at Chalet Mounty in Soll. Soll is brilliant and the ski welt area is second to none in terms of range of skiing. We have stayed in Chalets run by Crystal before with very positive results but this one can only be described as awful. The rooms are dirty, scruffy and about 30 years out of date and extremely badly equipped. The main areas are full of dirty trashed furniture, and the food was terrible. Ourselves and lots of other guests resorted to eating out as much as possible. The chalet has no noise protection and is totally unsupervised. There is no one from Crystal present at night and security is non existent, the keys are stored in reception with the room numbers next to each key. The chalet is run by a lot of young people who are totally unsupervised by Crystal, so although they are well meaning, the chalet would fail an environmental health inspection. Never again.

Stayed at the chalet mounty, first crystal owned week of season, had a great time, staff were absolutely great, could not do enough for us, we went as a party of 16, and the other guests were great to. Food was excellent, best we have had on a ski holiday. The rooms were all fine, not perfect, but for how long you are in them, they were perfectly suitable. We went with small children and the ski lockers at the gondola were a god send, we could put our skis in every day and got ourselves back to the chalet, on a 10 minute bus ride, and back to the hotel for Brads delicious cake.

This was our first time in Soll. A mixed ability group of 16. We had stayed at a Neilson Chalet hotel before and had no problems so we were looking forward to our stay. What a dissapointment!
I dont understand how this lodge rates so highly, One of our group immidiately booked into another hotel despite the cost. Whilst some of the rooms were adequate some of the so called twins were little more than a single with two beds squeezed in. The hotel was so hot all week that all of our group slept all night with doors and windows to the balconys open.
The Lodge is so far from any entertainment that we on occasions used taxis rarther than walk, especially late at night. If you did walk the "short cut" was across the local dog walking area...Apparently Austrians dont "poop scoop. Beware.
Its distance from the lifts was also dissapointing as the ski bus's dissapear for most of the day and the drivers are rude and unhelpful when they do appear.
Despite the Lodges shortcomings I cannot praise the staff enough. They were friendly, helpfull and always smiling despite our moans.Thank you to Sam, Becky and Vicky. Sorry I cant remember two lads names who worked the kitchen. Food was always hot and very good. Larger portions would have been welcome though.
I found the town of Soll to be dissapointing after visiting Mayerhofen and Kitzbuhl. It appeared dirty and tired with little to do apart from drink.
The skiing was not so good due to poor snow/weather conditions so I cant comment so well on the ski area. The one thing we all agreed as well as the reps was the poor piste map. So poor as to be unuseable. We found our way around by following the terrain and signs on piste.
All in all we definitely wont be returning to Soll or the lodge Mounty. Italy and the Sella Ronda, in my opinion, offer a far better experience.
