Waldrand
Reviewed November 23, 2008

The fact we have returned to the waldrand tells you we have had no problems, George and Ingrid, (and Carlos the dog) have always been very hospitable, even late in the season when you can see they are totally exhausted and looking forward to a good
rest.
I asked Ingrid once what she does at the end of the season...
'' I go up into the mountains find a cave and sleep, like a marmot''
made me chuckle..
George has a dry sense of humour, and is very witty once you have 'tuned in'.
The Waldrand has always been spotless, well laid out and warm, I would hate to pay their heating bill. The rooms are a decent size, and are cleaned and beds made up every day.

The dining area is cosy and has an easy going atmosphere. We've had some good chats with other guests, over a beer or two (or three).

Breakfast is buffet style, just help yourself to cheeses meats cereals boiled eggs toast, more than I get at home!
Evening meals are plentyfull as well, George takes your order, from a choice of two main meals, in the morning for that evening,
and the deserts are very moreish. One thing I do like at this Hotel,
You can see into the kitchen, spotless, not like some places where the kitchen is hidden away, and makes you wonder how your meal is being prepared.

Outside, the the ski shop and bus stop are only a couple of hundred metres away (if that). the ski shop is busy on your first day, when collecting your skis, but this is the same everywhere.
The ski bus runs every ten to fifteen mins and is only a five mins (max) drive to the gondola. Or, as they say, 'weather permitting'
you can ski down to the gondola where you have to remove your skis and walk through a tunnel under the main road and across a car park, to be honest I'd take the bus.

George doesn't allow smoking in the hotel, maybe in the rooms, not too sure as I'm not a smoker, a couple of bars in the village
are smoking bars and can get a bit ''foggy' at times. Living in Ireland we have got used to the smoking ban (best thing that ever happened) I just wish they would do it in Austria, just think, you spend all day out in the fresh air with plenty of excersize,
then go for a beer and stand in a smoke filled room all evening!!

Have been to plenty of resorts over the years some good some not so good. But a trip back to Scheffau and the Waldrand is something I do look forward to, I would reccommend it to anyone
who wants a good day skiing with easy access to the slopes, a decent meal, a quiet beer and a good nights kip. Those that want to be out all night on the p...Soll or Elmau are the places to go.

Have booked the 10th jan 09 can't wait, see you there!

We stayed at the Waldrand during the first week of March 2008. On first impressions the hotel is rather dated. But don't let this put you off! The hotel is run by George, Ingrid and their enormous St Bernard dog, Carlo. Carlo spends most of the day forming a doggy rug on the floor, while George & Ingrid are always ready to help if you want anything.

We found everywhere in the hotel to be very clean and in good working order. The room was plenty big enough with really comfy beds and soft sheets - none of the starched stiff bedclothes that you sometimes get. The sauna was lovely too.

Meals were fantastic every night. Four courses: a buffet salad, a homemade soup, a main course brought to your table (they give you the options each morning for that night) and a dessert. There is free wine and water over dinner, and you can buy most other drinks all evening. Breakfasts were equally good with lots of choice on the cold buffet. As a British person, I have to add that the tea was excellent! The staff were very accommodating on changeover day, making sure that everyone got breakfast and a hot dinner, however early they left and however late they arrived.

One of the best things about the Waldrand was how friendly everyone was with each other. There were no kids that week (I guess families tend to stay at the Alpin or other places where childcare is available) so there were lots of couples and small groups. As the hotel was full, people on their own or in couples were put on a dinner table with other people. This was a great opportunity to get to know others and made it 'socially acceptable' to have a chat with anyone really.

The Waldrand is 3 mins walk from Scheffau centre, where there is one bar, a Spar shop, 2 banks and a bus stop. The ski bus goes every 15 mins, or you can walk down to the lifts in about 15 mins. As previous reviewers suggest, I would highly recommend leaving your skis and boots at Hansi's ski shop right by the lifts. It costs 2 Euro per day and saves you having to clomp around in your skiboots or worry about your skis getting nicked while you are having a beer. There are a couple of bars at the bottom of the lifts and piste which are much busier than the one in Scheffau itself, so stay down there for a few drinks before coming back.

For a bit more action, you can go to nearby Ellmau or Soll. There is a public bus which runs a few times a day, or taxis are about 15 Euro each way. There is more to do there in the evenings, or if you are not skiing in the day. But if you're going primarily for skiing, and then back to a comfy hotel for a good meal and a few drinks, you don't need to look beyond Scheffau.

Good, homely hotel - laid back atmosphere and owners. 10 min walk from slopes and few minutes from centre of town. Scheffau quiet but good apres ski at bars by slopes.

Returned yesterday from a week staying at the Waldrand Hotel in Scheffau. I cannot fault this hotel at all, the food was excellent and there was loads of it. The owners were friendly and made you feel very welcome. The room was plenty big enough, and the shower was nice and hot. Use the Hanis hire shop at the bottom of the Gondala, very quick and good quality boots and ski's. I injured my knee on the first day and was unable to ski for the rest of the week, Hanis arranged a refund of my hire without question, even though this was not their policy. Also if you are thinking of buying your own equipment it is much cheaper than buying in the UK. My children who normally ski had private Snowboard lessons with Ski School Scheffau who offer very good discounts if you take lessons in the afternoon - $45 per hour (second child free) Monday to Friday and $35 per hour on Friday. Ask for the Dutch instructor Weicej who was great fun and spoke perfect english. If you want to take advantage of these discounts do not book the lessons with your rep. as they will not give you the same discounts. Injury aside we had a fantastic time and will be going back for sure. An Apres Ski visit to the Red Bull Tent next to the Gondala is a must!

Family run, very friendly hotel. Rooms small and clean but adequate as you are skiing all of the time. Food excellent, really tasty and it has an excellent vegetarian option. Unlimited free wine each night. Sauna is available at this hotel as is a ski and boot room.

I really enjoyed my stay here, it was cosy and welcoming and gave us the opportunity to mix with other guests. The intamicy of the hotel allows for a sociable and relaxed atmosphere.

Rooms clean & comfortable. Limited storage space only one wardrobe. Breakfast buffet, cold meat/cheese/cereals etc. Very good evening meal :soup, salad buffet, choice of main course, dessert & choice of wine. The village of Scheffau only has one pub & the hotel bar has a limited range of drinks and does not have a specific bar area. There is some apres ski at the bottom of the ski gondola but if you want a choice of bars then you have to go into Soll or Ellmau (12 euros each way by taxi). Recommend you pay to leave your skis/boots at Hannis at the bottom of the ski gondola (2 euros per day). You can walk to the ski lift 10mins downhill or take the free bus. Good range of skiing mostly red & blue runs and the whole linked area is well signposted (dont need a piste map really). Do make the effort to go to Westondorf which is covered on your pass..

Just back from a wondeful holiday staying at the Hotel Waldrand. First class hotel and excellent value for money. The owners were very friendly and welcoming.

The rooms are clean and tidy although quite small. They do have everything you need and are very comfortable. The half board basis was terrific with a choice of main coure. The food was very well presented and plentiful.

It is literally no more than a two minute walk to the ski bus stop however a real tip is to take advantage of the locker/storage system at the ski rental shop next to the red bull tent. For 2 euro per day you can leave you skis and boots there meaning no long walks in boots carrying skis. Just turn up in your own shoes, change collect your skis and walk 20 yards to the Gondola. When you are finished return yours skis and boots put your own back on and head for the red bull tent. Woth very cent of the 12 euros per week.

All in all a great hotel with good access to the amenties in the area.
