First visit Jan 2010 & again Jan 2012. We were not disappointed on either occassion. Good hosts, excellent food, very warm comfortable room with spectacular views. Nothing is to much trouble for George & Ingrid. The sauna was appreciated after a day on the slopes. Each time have garaged equipment at gondola - worth every penny. Ski area fantastic. Look forward to returning next year. jane & Barry

We enjoyed a lovely week at The Waldrand hotel, although it is as advertised locally a 3 star Pension.
Warm good sized rooms, all with balcony. lack of hanging space ie hooks!but nice separate loo and shower. It is basic, so you may need to take a a travel kettle/cups -they only supply each room with two plastic cups.
We were in Austria for the skiing which didnt disappoint and the Waldrand is close to a nice little blue run down to one of Scheffau's 2 gondolas. There is a ski hire shop in the village and a SPA supermarket, not open on Sundays, otherwise the village is very quiet. There is a pub in the village but we found it a bit smoky.
Meals at the Waldrand are very nice, good buffet breakfast. Evening meal choice includes a veggie dish and this is ordered at the breakfast table. All meals are freshly cooked each day by very pleasant owners George & Ingrid. Bar is reasonably priced too.
A nice no frills clean small hotel with mostly English guests.
Word of caution, use the ski garage at the gondola station and get ski hire insurance at 7 euros. One guest had their skis taken from the shed in the garden.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 106 austrian twin with bunk beds

The Waldrand was an authentic Austrian hotel run by George and Ingrid, with a bit of help from Carlo the St Bernard. George and Ingrid were very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. They made it feel a home from home. The rooms were cleaned daily and were perfectly big enough for two. The food was good, there was a choice of meat or veggie every night and given past experience of veggie food abroad, I was very impressed with the standard. George bought in all food fresh each day and prepared it himself. Breakfast was continental as you would expect, and there was plenty to choose from. The hotel itself was some distance from the gondola but there was a ski bus or you could walk to a very shallow blue run that went to the gondola (dependant on snow conditions). Expect to walk approx 200 metres to the bus stop or the blue run. On the other side of the hotel was a lovely woodland walk down to a river which you could do by 'torch' light organised by the Tourist Information (or by rep). Scheffau is a small pretty village. Its very quiet and there is only a few shops and bars and a bank. The ski area was vast and suitable for all levels, although the piste maps and sign posts sometimes seemed to contradict each other! Overall a very good value holiday. Many thanks to George, Ingrid and Carlo.

We stayed in the Waldrand in Scheffau for our skiing holiday and I was so pleased that I have booked this hotel. We have satyed in Scheffau before but stayed in another hotel which is close by to the Waldrand.
The Waldrand is an authentic austrian looking hotel and the views we had from our room were fantastic.
I can only agree with what other people have said about it. It really is a gem and George and Ingrid do work very hard to make a pleasant stay for everyone.
The meals were always tasty and the rooms were clean, warm and comfortable.
I loved Carlo the dog. He is so cute.
We will definately go back there if we go skiing to the Ski Welt again.

We,ve just returned from a fantastic holiday. There were 17 of us (families, couples and friends) and we all loved the Waldrand and Scheffau.
The ski area is awesome, the runs and facilities excellent. Catching the ski bus is no hassle, just rent a locker at the gondola station. Being based in Scheffau allows you to explore the whole of Skiwelt which provdes great skiing
George and Ingrid looked after us superbly. The evening meals were enjoyed by all 17 which is no mean feat including the kids. The quality was impressive. To have a sauna on site was a pleasure. The kids and adults loved Carlos the dog who was a gourgous old St Bernard.
Many thanks

The Waldrand is a small and fairly basic hotel in the ski resort of Scheffau, only open during the ski season.

It is run by George and Ingrid, and their large dog Carlo (who seems to be training to be a rug). It is situated away from the main road, and a fair way from the ski lifts (as are most hotels in Scheffau), but is only about a 150 metre walk to either the ski bus stop or the start of a very gentle piste which takes you down to the gondola station.

The room was fairly basic, but comfortable for one, with an ensuite shower & toilet. It might have been a little small for two.

The breakfasts were the usual style buffet meals with fruit, cereals, cheese, sliced meats, bread, etc. available.

Evening meals were a buffet salad followed by soup, main course and dessert. You had a choice of main course - always one meat and one vegetarian, and you were asked to select at breakfast which you wanted. I'm not vegetarian, but was seated with somebody who is, and he enjoyed every meal - as did I, choosing the meat option every night except one.

The hosts, George and Ingrid did everything they could to make us feel welcome, and were very hard working, with George doing the cooking, and both of them serving in the bar (which was open whenever they were around, and very reasonably priced).

The sauna was open from about 3:30 to 6:00pm every afternoon except Saturday. It was small (3-4 people at once was the most that was really comfortable), but seemed well maintained, and had a small changing/relaxation area and a shower which had both a "normal" and a cold "sheet" type shower. Being Austria, dress is normally none, but no fuss was made if Brits wanted to wear costumes.

Overall, a very welcoming experience, and I would happily go back to the same hotel if staying in Scheffau again.

Waldrand Pension /Hotel run by George and his wife is truly a hidden gem for a traveller like me who is always critical about everything when on holiday ! It surprised me in a very pleasant way everyday of my visit.

I stepped into Waldrand on 7th January 2012 in the midst of a heavy snowfall, tired of the long travel from Maidenhead in UK via Gatwick-Salzburg and on the bus arranged by our travel agent Crystal. My wife and 20 year old were probably even more tired than me. At 8.40 PM I would expecting and in the thick snow, I was expecting to probably go bed empty stomach. But to my surprise, George and wife were quite expecting us late and had Spaghetti Bolognese ready for us. We don't eat beef and we were afraid, we would have to eat just some bread/toast ( if available). But George was so kind to change the menu for us in the last minute. So the fabulous hospitality and personalized service started from Day 1 !

Our room 106, was huge and spacious. There was a baby cot already in the room. But there was also a spare bed for slightly older children. We found in the morning that our room had almost views of 3 different directions accessed by the most huge balcony I have ever seen in my life. Even 5 star hotels - sea facing resorts would be challenged !
The views of the snow peaked mountains were breath-taking. You could even see them lying in your bed all across.

When we stepped to the dining hall for our breakfast next morning after a good night's sleep, we were pleasantly surprised to see a table booked with our name on the table. The table already had a high-seat chair for our daughter. The breakfast spread was very generous and George and his wife ensured everyone was well fed before we went out to deal with the ski slopes. As I said Waldrand had a new surprise for us all 6-7 days that we stayed there. For the very first time in our hotel experience, we were asked to tell our preference of the dinner menu every morning. Since we didn't eat beef, the menu just like the first night was modified for us. Each night was a culinary experience by itself. The three course meal would easily challenge some of the fancy and pricey restaurants I have visited in London. Not to mention the warm and cosy atmosphere which George and his wife provided to us. Our daughter was always given what she wanted even before we could ask for it. Dropped cutleries were replaced, water glasses were re-filled, fresh plates were replaced on the table, fresh napkins were provided before we could spot a need on our daughter’s baby chair.

George came in the morning and offered a sledge for daughter ( we never asked for it or expected one in a hotel ! ).

The hotel is about 5 minutes walk from the Ski bus stop, banks, ski hire shops, childcare facilities ( in Alpin hotel) and Spar ( supermarket), village pub and church.

I could go on writing about specific incidents but I am sure by this time you get an idea.

The hotel is just fabulous for a nice family holiday and any family with young children will love being there. We had a great time out there and will highly recommend it.

Thomson and Crystal Ski have as well rated Waldrand highest for the excellence in service.

Room Tip: Go for room 106 !
