“Thank You, Esprit Ski”
Reviewed January 31, 2014

This was our first time with Esprit Ski. We booked an apartment in the catered Chalet Markus on the recommendation of an Inghams Area Representative. The three bedroomed apartment 15 was an excellent choice for our family of four adults and a baby. Having the spacious open plan lounge/diner/kitchen was a real bonus after some of the pokey little rooms we've had in the past staying in ski hotels.

Everywhere was kept spotlessly clean by Dom, the chalet manager, and Gracie his assistant. As I have some food allergies I was rather apprehensive given the necessarily limited menus but Ian, the chef, was AMAZING. He took such care to check everything with me and it was all delicious. The hot breakfasts were the best we've had on this type of holiday. On six days there were several hot options of egg, bacon, sausage and beans as well as pancakes, eggs and porridge. There wasn't a huge continental selection but with different breads, meats, cheese, fruit, yoghurts and cereals no-one went hungry. Afternoon cake was provided daily along with high tea for the under 12s at 5.30 and dinner starting with canapés and drinks for the adults at 7.30 on 6 nights of the week. We had hoped there would be the option to purchase a packed lunch, maybe something for Esprit to consider?

The only problem was with the location of the chalet. The brochure states 5 minutes to the nearest lift. It look the adults in our party 10 minutes to walk down, slightly longer back as it was all uphill, quite steep at that. There was, however a free ski bus stop almost opposite the chalet and they reported there was always room on the bus. I think mini bus transport to ski school was provided by Esprit. It was certainly available for the nursery age children. The childcare staff were absolutely lovely and visited the chalet regularly. Our little one only used the nursery one day but had a great time there.

We booked the mountain meal through Anthony, the rep, on Ian's day off. Anthony booked a taxi for us to the location of the piste basher which took us up the mountain to the restaurant. We weren't told it was unsuitable for mobility impaired people and it was an extremely undignifying experience being manhandled on and off the piste basher. I also wouldn't advise this for little ones as there are no high chairs provided and you will share a table with other people you don't know. Luckily we had a table to ourselves and our 23 month old sat up to the table beautifully unlike the nearby 20 month old whose poor parents had a nightmare of an evening with a very distressed baby. This wasn't a cheap night out but with "all you can eat" and the experience of riding a piste basher it was unforgettable.

We had a really good holiday and would certainly return to Chalet Markus in a heartbeat. Thank you to all the wonderful staff who made our time there so special x

This was our second time with Esprit and second time in Austria having previously stayed in France and done smaller operator holidays with small nanny teams who came to your chalet.
This was by far the nicest chalet accommodation we've had. We had a large apartment on the ground floor, with a separate sitting room, 2 bedrooms, kitchenette, large bathroom and loo.
The chalet had a small sitting area for aperitifs and then a dining area which was set with separate tables for breakfast and one large one for dinner. Food in the evenings was good, for adults as well children but the breakfast was sparse in the mornings, apart from when we persuaded the chef to make pancakes!
In theory in the mornings the children were all picked up from the chalet and taken to ski school. This worked fine for our 10 year old who was perfectly happy to be left as soon as the childcare staff arrived. Unfortunatley our 4 yr old wasn't and no particular effort was made to see why and what could be done to make this happen. This meant that we took him on the bus to the centre, and then 1 of us walked him down to the chalet where the snowclub was whilst the other signed our 12 yr old into her ski school lessons. So we had three children to get three places between 9 and 9:30, whilst carrying ski kit! We soon decided to leave our skis and boots in the garage of Pepe Garbl, the chalet used by Esprit next to the main lift, again noone either noticed or mentioned this as an option to us.
The main problem we had with the snow club childcare for our 4 yr old was that there was no keyworker system so we could never prepare him to know who would be working there, and it usually was someone different which made it very hard to drop him off. We usually wouldn't get this accomplished and then walk back to Pepe to put on our skis and boots until at least 10am, having been attempting to get children sorted and settled since 8:30am.
Because he wasn't particuarly happy in the childcare we picked him up from his ski lesson at 3 rather than him having to go back to the dreaded snow club.
Skiing in St Anton is a lot of fun and pretty challenging and varied, and we enjoyed Austria a lot but most likely won't do another Esprit Ski holiday as we need less ski faff in the mornings, and some different kind of childcare with a more personal touch.

The Chalet Markus has been well received by our guests this season, so it is pleasing to note that ‘Alplus3’ was equally satisfied with the accommodation. We were, though, disappointed to note the comments made about aspects of the child care arrangements, which do not appear to have been discussed with our resort team at the time so that the possibility of action to improve their enjoyment could have been explored. In our Snow Club sessions we endeavour to ensure that there is as little variation in staff members as possible. We regret that their youngest was at times reluctant to join Snow Club after his Spritelet ski sessions, spending time with the family instead.
St Anton is indeed a superb resort. It is only disappointing that our child care did not meet the needs of ‘AlPlus3’ and their family.
