A very professionally run hotel with fantastic service and thoughtful staff who accommodated our every need. After learning to board the sphere spa was just the ticket! The Easter gift at breakfast was a nice touch - the chocolate certainly came in handy on the slopes. Would definitely recommend to couples and older families looking for a truly relaxing break.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the south facing rooms on the third floor - sunnier with great terraces.

This was our third stay at Obergurgl but our first time at the Josl. We decided to stay here since we knew it was in a central location, just a few metres from the two main lifts and also for a change of character since it came across as a bit different from the traditional Austrian-style hotels which prevail in Obergurgl. We were made immediately welcome by the friendly reception staff and this warm attention continued throughout our stay by everyone in the hotel's team. The rooms are bight and modern with plenty of storage space. Our studio room also had a lovely balcony with views of the mountains and the pistes.
The beds are so comforable and there is the nice touch of a turn-down service. It is a nice size hotel ie not too big and so remained very personal. The bar was always nicely busy and it was nice to spend time there after dinner playing cards or being entertained by the weekly live music. There is also the Josl bar downstairs but we did not bother to venture down. The food is really tasty with plenty of choice to suit most diets, tastes and appetities! It is frustrating that tap water is not available but that has been true of all three hotels we have stayed at. The Spa on the fifth floor was a real treat at the end of a day's skiing. There are two saunas, two steam rooms, foot spas, a range of herbal and fruit teas to help yourself too and plenty of room to simply lounge around, take in the scenary and relax zzzzzzzz! Your room includes towelling robes and slippers which you can use when you go to the Spa so no need to change at the Spa itself. This hotel is great if you would rather not be in the company of young families since it does not allow kids under 8. It does create a different, relaxing atmoshere. There are only a few less favourable observations which have been made by other reviewers - the main gripe is that smoking is allowed in the bar and this can make it quite uncomfortable - it is such a shame the air conditioning could not cope with the smoke or that they did not have distinct smoking areas since the bar area is great with a really good atmosphere. Our children had a standard room which was slightly on the small size and our studio room was the size you would expect as a standard. If you go on their website you can see details of the rooms and their layout. Otherwise I would very much recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a studio room since the standard rooms are on the small side.

Just returned from a 5 day skiing trip. Stayed at the Josl Hotel. Location is central and the food is a real experience. Absolutely wonderful and plenty of it too. The staff are friendly and helpful and know their trade. Lovely spa centre on the top floor, which I took advantage of twice after skiing on the slopes. Very close to the ski lifts. When I was there the smoke in the bar area was very limited so did not mind too much. Great hotel and great resort. I would definitely go again.

Room Tip: The two rooms my party stayed in were very good.Slightly better room on opposite side of hotel away...

Spent another great week in The Josl. All the usual cliches about friendliness of staff and quality of food actually apply here.Every member of staff seems to have bought in to the ethos of the owners , who are about the reception area most of the time.
I have to agree with the other reviewers who mentioned the smoking. It is so taken for granted in most countries that we all have the right to breath clean air , it is a pity that it has not yet reached here!I did think that it was not as bad this time as the last time I was here 2 years ago.So hopefully it will have improved further for next time!!
A number of reviewers have mentioned the sauna etiquette. While we were there both the clothing and age rules were not adhered to.Not sure what can be done about this as the rules are clearly posted on the door to the sky sphere. This was not a major problem, maybe even bigger notices might remedy this!!!!
I look forward to staying in The Josl again . Despite the whole modernist decor it really has a homely welcoming feel.

Lovely modern, clean, sizeable room. Delicious food, with friendly and attentive service. Nice wine list (and the staff know their way around it and can give recommendations).

But we won't be back until they stop letting people smoke in the bar / reception / lounge area. I feel very sorry for the staff working behind reception when it reeks of cigarette and cigar smoke, and we certainly didn't fancy sitting there. You can't avoid it as it's the heart of the hotel, and on a bad night the smell of smoke made its way into the restaurant.

Also note that the sauna / spa area is very nice but compulsorily nude (and mixed), which may be normal for Austria but a bit uncomfortable for some other cultures.

I stayed at the Hotel Josl for the second time in Jan/Feb 2012. It is probably the most modern hotel in Obergurgl or at least it looks that way. All the rooms have been decorated in a very stylish way. The superior rooms really aren't that much bigger than a standard room - the standard rooms are a good size, feel lovely and luxurious after a hard days skiing and are always really clean. The staff could not be more friendly and helpful. The hotel is not massive and is family run so you get a really nice home from home atmosphere. It is very close to the ski lifts for the morning and the skiing back from the nederhutte is not too difficult after a few gluhweins.
There are a couple of small things that I think let the hotel down slightly (1) there is no swimming pool or jacuzzi/hot tub which would be nice after skiing (although there are saunas, steam rooms & foot spas) (2) the bar is lovely with an amazing fireplace but because you can smoke here, in the evening if it is busy, it gets really quite smoky which can get to you if you're a non smoker (3) the food on the whole is very good but sometimes i felt like the chef tried a little bit too hard - eg not every soup needs a foam on it!
All in all it is a great hotel but for me I might try somewhere else next time in Obergurgl.

The Josl's modern interior is the perfect antidote to the typical tyrolian pine palaces that abound in the exclusive family friendly resort of Obergurgl. Add great service, fine dining, excellent location (very convenient for ski school and the lifts) and you have a fantastic option for a great ski break.....Just add snow!
