From all my Hotel-experiences this was one of the best concerning the service. I never had such a professional nice and competent service ever. The Hotel is very nice decorated in nature colors specially the bar is extremely cosy. The food is in a very high quality. They speak french, english german some of them a bit russian. The customers are international. The Hotel is in the heart of the skiarreas. You can start right arround the Hotel.

Room Tip: The new renovated suites are spacious and nice decorated.

The food was excellant, the spa wonderful and the rooms comfortable. The pool was heated indoors and out to comfortable temperatures unlike some hotels nearer the main lift which while brilliantly situated have a far colder pools.
This hotel will not be ski-in ski-out for less experienced skiers and they would need to take the bus (which is frequent) to the main lifts.

Strangely the lifts at the resort close at 4pm even in late spring when the light is good.

The hotel is not a 4 star superior hotel: we booked a standard room and the interior is extremly outdated. When we asked for an upgrade for a refurbished room, the reception guy was quite unfriendly (even though we were fine to pay for the upgrade!). We then did get an upgraded, refurbished room (which is nicely done) however there is no minibar or even water in rooms, even though the room is non-smoking, there is an ashtray, the TV is way to small to be comfortably watching TV etc. At 8 in the morning, hotel staff entered our room (?!) to bring over something that was left in the first room before our upgrade...

The food at dinner was disappointing, staff is unfriendly in bar and restaurant. I remembered reading a review before I went there about how the smile on staff's faces seems artificial and that is the most accurate description of the "friendliness" in this hotel. The breakfast buffet was disappointing as well, even though there is a wide array of choices (most of which looked very non-fresh), the quality of the produce was bad and stuff was left out for way to long (cheese was all melty/hard around edges etc. )

I have travelled to Austria many times before and I was greatly disappointed by this hotel's non-Austrian standard when it comes to treating guests and the price/value.

Moved to the Hochfirst after four years at the E&G. In summary the Hochfirst is a first class hotel with well trained staff. Food was excellent and way above the standard offered by the E&G.
Previous posters have blamed the hotel and Crystal for their choice of rooms. This is unfair as both the hotel website and Crystal website are clear in what they are offering. Ignoring the suites unless you go for a room described as “superior” then you will get a room that has not been upgraded. We had a superior room on the third floor and the room could not be faulted with high quality fittings and a walk in rain shower in the heated floor bathroom and separate toilet. No bath, but didn’t miss it. South facing with a balcony that had the sun for most of the day.
The restaurant was beautifully furnished and by the use of dividers created an intimate dining experience, compared to it the E&G was like a noisy canteen.
Menu was varied and of high quality with no need to choose the evening meal at breakfast. Generally the menu for dinner had a choice of four items for each course but if nothing took your fancy, on the reverse of the menu was a choice of many other dishes. Wine prices were as expected with a medium bottle of wine being around 31 Euros. Largest beers served were .3l whereas they should be .5l. Get some larger glasses please. Coffees in the hotel were more expensive than the E&G eg for a latte 4.20 Euros compared to 2.90 Euros.
Please note that there is no free wifi in the hotel and so we paid 25 Euros for five days plus one free which covered a typical skiing week. The coverage was patchy in the bar and restaurant but excellent in the bedroom as there were boosters along the corridors.
As for most alpine hotels the bedrooms and lounges were incredibly hot and so the idea of sitting by the open fire in the bar just did not appeal. A duo entertained in the bar on the Thursday night and they were really good.
Now to the chief bugbear which has been mentioned by many posters, the smoking policy. Smoking in the bar and lounge areas is permitted with even cigars offered. Austria is out on a limb with this policy and talking to some German guests they also did not appreciate the smell of the smoke in the air and on your clothes. In practice most of the lounge areas are set aside for smokers with only a small settee by reception set aside as non smoking. We even made them open up the pool side restaurant one night to get some smoke free space. To get to the restaurant you have to walk through the bar and so you have no choice but to inhale the smoke. Imposing this on the staff who work in the bar and on children present is just beyond me. Most of the hotels in Obergurgl however share this policy. As a member of a private sports club I recall that, several years before the smoking ban in the UK, that a vote was proposed to ban smoking throughout the club as it did not fit in with the ethos of a sports club. A doctor member spoke eloquently at the meeting of the cocktail of carcinogenic chemicals in cigarette smoke and a ban was duly introduced. Remember that the Hochfirst describes itself as an Alpen Wellness Resort. There was talk that an extension to the lounge areas was to be made for us non smokers but seriously we need more than this. The owners don’t seem to respond to TA postings but perhaps they would like to tell us what plans there are with regard to the smoking areas.
Turning to the spa area. The pool area was noisy but the sauna and rest areas were first class. The new outdoor sauna really needs a water fountain as it is too far from the only one in the rest area.
I really loved this hotel and the Fender family were hands on and very polite. It would have rated five stars but for the smoking issue. However that would not put us off booking again. Staff members who gave service over and above the call of duty and who should be commended were our waitress in the restaurant Yvonne, two reception staff Marcel and Lisa-Marie and the front of house manager Kirsten.

Currently staying in the Hochfirst and quite disappointed. The public areas and restaurant are of a good standard however the room we are allocated in is terrible. We have complained to both the hotel and crystal rep but apart from an extra pillow and extra duvet putting on the bed to make it more comfortable nothing has been done. We paid extra through crystal for a south facing room which we believed would be a newly refurbished room, however the wording on the website is very mis-leading as these rooms aren't refurbished at all but very old and in desperate need of updating. I certainly wouldn't choose the hotel again because of the poor standard of the room.

This hotel is in the process of a step-by-step renovation and as such the quality of the rooms range widely. Most of the other aspects of the hotel, namely the restaurant, the swimming and sauna areas and the spa, are all 4 to possibly 5 star and I would have given a 5 overall if the rooms, lifts and hallways were of a higher and consistent standard. As it is, a 4 is an optimistic rating given renovation of the lower standard rooms bringing them to the level of luxury that the rest of the hotel deserves!

We assume that since we booked through a tour operator (Crystal) we were initially placed in a lower quality “standard” room. The reception staff (Marco in particular) was quite accommodating with our request for an upgrade and found an available renovated room for 4 of the 7 nights during the busy half-term season and helped to arrange a seamless room move.

However, during our first and last nights we stayed in different non-renovated rooms on the Festkogl side of the hotel. Both were very tired with worn and stained carpets and heavily scratched furnishings and walls, outdated bathroom fixtures, lingering odours, uncomfortable beds and pillows, scratchy linens, street noise. In sum, hardly at the level of 4* or 4* superior as it claims to be.

On the other hand, the renovated room that we stayed in on the Hochfirst (sunny) side of the hotel was certainly quieter, had a nicer view and was renovated to a high standard (although there are rooms with even more recent refurbishment). Our room on the 4th floor was a decent size with a comfortable mattress and high quality bedding and linens, much better lighting and bathroom fixtures, heated bath floor, a full-length mirror, larger and nice, modern looking closets and bureaus, real chairs with pillows on the balcony - enough to rate 4* but to rate any higher would need better carpeting, higher quality and better selection of toiletries including hair conditioners with daily refills on all items, a mini-bar with coffee and tea machine and the extra touch luxury hotels offer such as fruit and chocolates, free bottled water etc. Note not all of the rooms on the 4th floor are renovated.

The food in the restaurant is for the most part excellent though I wish I’d avoided the fish on most nights (tended to be dry/overcooked) and the pancakes at breakfast were not so good. Overall, the food presentation is fantastic and the breakfast buffet has all you could ask for and more. Ask for a table near a window or at least not under a center spotlight under which we sat! The bar and outside terrace are very nice and comfortable but they need more blankets on the terrace and friendlier and faster service. The lobby and other lounges are very elegant and comfortable in traditional Austrian style with fireplace and soft armchairs and farmhouse style benches around large wooden tables. (If you’ve stayed in 4/5 star Austrian hotels before, it will all feel very familiar, right down to the cushion patterns and salad bar contents).

The swimming and sauna areas are probably the nicest parts of the hotel (and were recently renovated) and deserve a 5* with more than enough seating, adults-only quiet areas, great variety of saunas and steam rooms, a sleeping room with amazing water beds, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, all very luxurious and well-attended by quiet and efficient staff bringing fresh, soft towels and whisking away used water cups and linens.

The management is highly professional and always polite, very efficient in a truly Austrian way but not overly friendly. One certainly feels oneself to be a welcome guest but not invited to stay too long. The restaurant staff never introduced themselves but became more forthcoming and pleasant near the end of a week of twice daily meetings.
Though there is a kids’ club it is only on offer during the day so there is nowhere for smaller children to play or eat together, making meals a hurried and hassled affair. We have stayed in similar hotels that had play areas and even a caretaker offering complimentary entertainment which meant adults could mingle and chat knowing their children were safe and happy. There is a games room but in a dimly lit hard-to-find basement room and though the cleaning staff found my daughter’s cherished pencil case, they failed to bring it to reception so it was gone when she remembered where she’d left it.

I like to tip where and when it is deserved but the staff is not supported in this manner very well - for example, on the bill one signs in the spa there is no line to add a tip so, unless you’ve been organised and brought along cash, you may not know you can add a tip on the bill.

All in all a 3.5/4* with the potential to go higher with a few changes, albeit expensive renovations involved but ones that would quickly pay for themselves. I understand that there will always be some rooms that are nicer or better situated in any hotel but there are ways of balancing this so that each and every guest feels appreciated and welcome.

Room Tip: Make sure to upgrade before travel if booking through a tour operator

I stayed in the Hochfirst Hotel for a week (Sat-Sat), and the experience was excellent. The food is amazing, breakfast and dinner - I always went out for lunch - and you can also go to the bar to get drinks and food. The waiters/waitress' in the dining hall are very polite and speak very good english (and of course german). The facilities in the hotel are excellent, my favourites were the indoor and outdoor swimming pool and the games room. If you need help with anything, you have lost something or you need somewhere to go etc, then all the staff are very helpful, at the reception or even in the dining room.
The only bad thing that I would say about the hotel is that in the bar, people are allowed to smoke but overall, the hotel is excellent - we are definitely coming back for the next couple of years - so I would definitely recommend it :) From Alex - England.

Room Tip: Rooms on the higher floors (such as floors 4-6) have a much nicer view of the mountains and the town...
