“A great hotel”
Reviewed October 3, 2011

We have been to Obergurgl 4 times now and each time we have had lunch at the Hochfirst and a drink in the evening too. We loved it and this year we found a bargain and went for a week in January 2011.
It was lovely. Service was great, food was good although not as good as some of the other hotels in resort. The room was lovely, huge and comfy beds.
The wellness area is just amazing. Pool in which you can swim outdoors in the snow is lovely. A selection of saunas and steam rooms make for a relaxing and wonderful stay.

Having skied all over the world and stayed in some incredibly bad places, this was a refreshing change. Couldnt fault it at all and I was 4 months pregnant when I went skied each morning and had a massage or lie in the massage chairs in the pool in the afternoon, an absolute pleasure weve booked to go again

We stayed in the Hochfirst in March 2011 & the hotel was excellent from first to last. The welcome was first class we were met with a welcome drink our baggage was taken to the room & our skis to the skiroom. Food on the first night was a buffet which did not disappoint the standard was excellent. The standard stayed the same throughout our trip. The staff were always courteous, friendly & attentive.

The room was very clean with a separate toilet & shower an LCD telly with BBC1 which made a change from BBC News 24 which is the norm in most hotels overseas. The only negative thing I could say about the room is I was too tall for the shower but it was no hardship, I’m 5’11/180cm so not that tall.

The skiroom was large had plenty of racks for skis/boards & warmers for boots. There is a drag lift at the very most one minutes walk from the skiroom, (you can put your skis on at the back of the hotel next to the skischool to make it 30 seconds if you wish),& it takes you up far enough so you can ski downto the nearest gondola & your off!
After a days skiing you can ski all the way back to the hotel & have that 30 second walk to the ski room I mentioned earlier! There is a welcome at the bar & once your thirst is quenched you can enjoy the marvellous wellness area! It’s Austria so everyone will be naked if you can’t cope with that stay by the pool & swim out to enjoy the fresh air or soak in the jacuzzi.

We booked with Inghams & there were also folks from Crystal & independents, not one of the people we spoke to had a bad word to say about this hotel & we would definitely go back.

DO NOT STAY HERE. If you want to surly slow service and want be ripped off and reminded of it about every five minutes - then this is the place to stay.

My new husband and I went to Obergurgl for our honeymoon. We were so excited for our skiing adventure and friends and family had forked out about a months salary so we could stay for a week at the Hochfirst. Within an hour of checking in - I was near tears and would have moved to another hotel if we hadn't paid in full in advance for 7 days.

The fact it was our HONEYMOON was stated in caps in our booking. The staff could not have cared less. When we checked in, we mentioned it was our honeymoon, and the woman at reception should have just rolled her eyes. We got exactly the room we had booked, no 'welcome' or 'happy honeymoon' or even something as nice as some chocolates or bottle of bubbly in the room to welcome us nor (gasp at the thought) a room upgrade. (Some or all of these had been provided at previous hotels on our journey there, which is a lovely personal touch).

Our room was tired, with evidence of woodworm. The extractor fans in both the toilet and the bathroom did not work which meant that smells/steamy air would linger in the rooms for hours after use. For most of our stay, my partner and I used the communal WCs off the hotel restaurant rather than smell out our room.

After checking in and within 5 minutes of being in our room, we could hear the people in the room above us dragging around furniture and their kid(s) running back and forth and squealing. We turned on the tv to drown out the noise, but about 10 minutes later the tv started to emit a high-pitched whistle (like microphone feedback). I went down the reception to talk to the indifferent staff member, who I was obviously bothering with these problems - but she promised to send someone up. She did arrive 5min later with a staff member. First, she told me there as no one in the room above us and I must be hearing 'other noise'. Astounded, I said 'How about you come in and stand here for a minute and you and hear what I'm talking about' - she was clearly annoyed her initial response had failed to get rid of me and agreed. It took about 30 seconds for a chair to be dragged and the child to go running across the floor and she said 'Umm yes, that is quite loud, I'll go talk to them' and left the room. Secondly, in the mean time, the additional staff member admitted there was a problem with the tv, wiggled a cable at the back which stopped the whistling and left. Basically at this point I was near tears; we'd paid an enormous amount of money, for a tired, old room with a broken tv and listening to the people above us with rude staff who didn't care. If we hadn't paid in full in advance, we would have checked out and into another hotel down the road.

For the rest of the stay, the tv would start whistling after being on for about 5min and we would wiggle the cable to make it temporarily stop. Finally we gave up and didn't use the tv, and most nights and mornings were accompanied by the family above us and their child running around and dragging furniture.

There is no mini bar or room service. Also, if you request anything to be sent up to the room from the bar/restaurant, there is a 5 euros additional charge.

The service at the bar was incredibly slow; I'm talking about 15 minutes to be asked what you'd like (if you were lucky). When we didn't specify the beer we wanted, they automatically served the more expensive one. We checked our bar bill halfway through our visit to see that we were being charged for the aged version of the bourbon (at 10 euros a pop) we were drinking instead of the regular version we had been drinking (6 euros a pop). In all fairness, they did apologise and amend our bill but we were grateful WE'D spotted this.
The wifi available for the lobby/restaurant area is free - but what you get is a login and password to a temperamental website which good for two hours, which is such a pain. Other bars in the area have free wifi with no login so we would just go drink there and use their hassle free wifi instead.

One of our more jaw dropping experiences was when my new husband had twisted his knee skiing. We had managed to get him back into the hotel and on our way up to the room stopped at reception to ask for some ice to be brought up to the room. When we asked the guy behind the desk for the ice, the guy responded by pointing to thru to the bar area and said 'You can go get that in the bar' and turned to walk away. My husband angrily reminded him that he'd hurt himself and to 'Send the ice up to the room'. The ice did arrive about 4min later.

In the interest of being fair, I will say that the food provided is excellent. Both my partner and I consider ourselves a little bit of food snobs, and we were very impressed by both the breakfast and dinner offerings on all days. Our server was absolutely lovely and really made that little part of our stay each night esp. nice.

But beware, you will be charged for anything that is not food, such as water, coffee, wine, beer etc. A little tip, ask for 'house water' i.e. tap water so you aren't charged nearly 3 euros for a bottle of still water.

The wellness area is quite nice, with two saunas and two steam rooms and relaxation areas. This was continually cleaned and quite lovely and large. We used these almost daily which was great after skiing.

The spa was small and overpriced, although my massage was amazing. We soon discovered that other hotel spas down the road charge an average of about 10-20 euros cheaper for the same treatments.

Obergurgl is an amazing place and we absolutely LOVED it there and the skiing there, and will be back. The skiing and ski school is amazing, and there is one ski pass for Obergurl and Hochgurgl. We didn't let our hotel experience ruin our time there and spent the evenings checking other places to drink and chill and to stay next time. We will be back to Obergurgl, but staying in a different hotel next time.

Not a terrible hotel but the most disappointing four star hotel we have ever stayed at in Austria and certainly there is better for the money elsewhere.

Facilities:
Pool area nice but not that special, spa area ok but fairly compact. Bar area nice with open fire and variety of furniture. Sun-lounger area outside by piste was nice. Ski and boot room dis-organised and inadequate for size and quality of hotel. Our room (we had upgraded to a large room) was spacious and clean but decor tired and required maintenance. No shower screen or curtain meant bathroom floor was flooded with water constantly.

Service:
Inefficient and indifferent. Quality of food is average to good. Breakfast selection was good but no more so than any Austrian hotel of this standard. Dinner was mostly buffet style which may or may not be to your taste. The drinks in the bar were excellent (great cocktails) but service was really slow. Also very smoky but this is a feature of Austria. Tables both in the bar and outside on the sun terrace were often all reserved, including by non-residents which was frustrating as we would have reserved had anybody recommended this to us. Overall, noticeable that the staff concentrated on looking after regular guests and never mind the rest.

Location:
You can ski back to the hotel on either a red or blue run. The red is fine for confident intermediates. The last section on the blue is long and flat and for beginners may involve some poling! You can either walk to the Festkogl gondola (only a couple of minutes) or you can go up a short button from behind the hotel and ski down to the gondola - be aware this is also the meeting point for ski school, convenient but can cause queuing at peak times. This end of the village is not the main area but is only a 5 minute walk to the rest of the village. Obergurgl is a pretty small quiet resort in any case.

wonderful location and facilities for a skiing holiday. After a good day on the slopes re-vitalise in the pools, sauna and bar.
dinner is many courses, served by caring waiters who chat and banter with the guests.
if the hot chocolate isn't hot enough, ask and they will bypass the machine and make it hotter. nothing was too much trouble.
expensive but quality.
free internet in the bar.
ski in now easier on red run 3 (see photo)
no need to ski out as the bus stops outside and you can be at the top of the furthest run in 30mins.
my only complaint with Obergurgl is that smoking still occurs in Austrian bars, and mountain restaurants.

i went to the hochfirst jan 2011 with my partner and 4 year old .the staff at the hochfirst were friendly spoke good english and gave you a sense of general wellbeing, the food was amazing, creative and abundant very good quality and presented with much excitment by efficient waiters. The indoor and outdoor swimming pools were great ..28 indoors and heated to 31 outdoors ,loads of towels two hot juccuzis and tasteful surroundings..My little 4 year old was excited by the loverly kindergarten lots of toys etc,The rooms were large and comfortable and the shower etc worked to a high standard .I was able to ski more or less right up to the hotel. The 5/10 min walk into the town might be a problem for the seriously obese or grossly inactive [skiing holiday?]and for those who just dont want to there is a free bus that travels back and forth every 20mins or the hochfirst will be happy to take you into town in their own transport . To summerize i was looking for a quality holiday with a 4 year old and the hochfirst did not disappoint ,money well spent and ill be going back........enjoy
