“Happy Christmas”
Reviewed April 14, 2008

Booked on last minute.com for a ski week over Christmas. A reasonable £599 for half board.

The best element of the hotel is the location right next to the gondola and the hotel has an excellent ski and boot room.

The rooms were comfortable and clean as was the rest of the hotel. the food was plentiful - if a little rich for enlish tastes, be sure to ask for things well done if you don't like blood - and not just for a steak.

Staff very helpful and couteous - would stay again.

Skiing : the hotel location keeps you out of the scrum in the centre of town in the morning and you can get high very quickliy. Be sure to try Solden which you can get on the lift pass for a marginal extra fee (if you do ti when you buy your pass - can't do it later !)

Head for Hochgurgl and the mountain star first thing in the morning and catch the sun early.

Last tip try the golf simulator in Hochgurgl - it's fab.

I was part of a large group (25 people) who stayed at the Deutschmann last week, and we had the most fantastic time. Like others, it is hard to understand some of the rather harsh reviews. I don't know what people expect for their money - this is not an expensive hotel. The Hotel was very friendly, the rooms were comfortable and the decor Austrian. The open fire was lovely. The food was good (though could be a bit slow) and the staff were helpful (perhaps a bit understaffed in the evenings). The afternoon treats from 3 - 5 pm were always most welcome, and our large group was accommodated and looked after willingly by everyone. The jacuzzi and sauna and plunge pools were lovely, the boot room spacious, and the location wonderful. Many people have commented that the red run down to the hotel is difficult for beginners - but you can always come down in the gondola ! We had awful weather all week, but still had the best time, and almost unanimously would vote to go back there. PS don't miss the apres ski in the NEDERHUTTE on monday, wednesday and friday at 4.00. Just fantastic !

Right firstly there is nothing inherently wrong with this hotel and the reviews don't seem to do it justice. I guess much of your review depends on how much you paid in the first place - I got this deal half price and was more than satsified.

For starters Obergurgl is a VERY upmarket resort that is quiet and family orientated. Think little nightlife that is only really available in hotels and 3 rounds for 8 people reaching 180 Euros! Do not let this put you off - due to its class it is a very nice resort. One of the only places I have seen ski jackets over 1500 Euros.

I can honestly say I did not really visit other hotels in the town but they were all very upmarket and mainly inhabited by well heeled Germans who had crossed the border in their Mercs!

The Deutchmann was efficient - check-in was fine and the rooms although having very old TRADITIONAL dark Austrian decor were clean and spacious. Our party of 8 all had TV's, Fridges and Safes although not all in each room!

The evening meals were pretty much faultless - 5 courses each night with a seperate salad & Pasta buffet. Some of the courses were a bit strange/interesting but who want burger and chips??!! Yes they liked you to buy wine before they delivered water to your table but we were all drinking beer! ;-) This caused a couple of issues with some guests when complaining to a waiter who had limited english skills! - Some people seem to forget they are in another country!

The Sauna and Whirlpool were VERY hot but relaxing after a day bashing the slopes. Interestingly enough most guests seemed to finish skiing about 3 - 3.30pm! This was probably due to the snacks provided at this time each day. They were nice however when they are gone - they are gone on a first come first served basis. We prefered to ski till the last lifts closed at about 4.30pm alone on the mountain whilst the rest of the town seemed to have a small apres ski session from 3.30 - 7pm??!! Strange!

The hotel is conviently located next to the gondola upto Festkoglhutte. Skis are stored in a room which steps out to a 2 minute walk up some steps to this. (Also location of ski hire shop) I also recommend the night skiing from this life which I think was every Tuesday night with a ski show and fireworks. 8km of floodlit piste is a challenge!

Breakfast was good too - Jam, Bread, rolls, Pastries and unusually for europe hot bacon, sausages and scrambled eggs!

The Bar has a very entertaining bar man and fairly reasonable drink prices when compared to other places within the resort.

Summary - If you have paid under £1k to stay here then its pretty good as most other hotels in the resort are above that for a week! Its like most thinks in life you get what you pay for - there is probably better in the resort but not at the same price. The Deutchmann is comfy and more than adequate for a weeks skiing in my opinion and is not deserving of some of the ratings on here.

We stayed at the Deutschmann for a weeks skiing holiday and we have only good to say about both the hotel and the resort. The hotel is next to a ski gondola (but the route down is for the intermediate not the beginner) but the ski bus stop is also at this lift so no problem getting to the beginner ski area, plus the main ski area for Obergurgl. The only negative thing with the hotel is the bedrooms which although very clean are a little on the old fashioned side, however, with respect to the comment s made by some people that the hotel itself is old fashioned (??? 60,s style) i believe these people do not realise that the hotel is actually decorated in the traditional Austrian style (thus it is not old fashioned). The breakfast was alright, but the main meals were very good. Overall the hotel was great, the holiday great, the resort great, and yes we will be going back to both the resort and the hotel.

Having booked the Deutschmann hotel last December for this December and then read bad reviews on this website I was expecting the worse on arrival for Christmas holidays in fact I was dreading it and it spoiled the anticipation of my holiday - shame on you, nothing could have been further from the truth, I have stayed at 3 hotels in Obergurgl over the last 3 years and this was the most relaxed, friendly and cosy hotel of the lot - the others were the Crystal and Olympia. Food was of a very high standard with 5 course meals nightly, my only observation was that the meals tended to go on for 2-3 hours, not good for families with young children, however we were paired at our dinner table with a charming couple and so long dinners were not a problem for us and a very enjoyable evening was had every night and we were often among the last to leave. The rooms were of a good standard, and very warm and cozy and not in need of refurbishment as another review states although this hotel is being joined to a new hotel and linked further to the Crystal and being refurbished anyway I understand, I would opt to stay in the Deutschmann wing any time. Hotel is right next to the Festkogl bahn cable car lift. Theski and boot room had lots of room and made for easy getting ready in the morning and a very short walk across the car park to the main lift. Complimentary snacks in the bar from 3pm was a nice touch after a hard day's skiing. As for surly staff, read about by reviewers - I can only imagine the other reviewers were complaining for the sake of complaining. The staff were friendly, helpful and courteous all week, Mr Shams the retaurant manager saw to it that everyone was treated well. Fresh water was provided whether or not you ordered wine - I don't know why the other complainer stated that.
So ignore the grumpy complainers views - given it is not as "posh" as the Crystal, but if you wanted the luxury 4/5 star resort that the whingers wanted you would go to the Crystal of the Hochfirst in the first place and not try and get a lastminute.com holiday here and expect it to be something amazing. If you want a great ski holiday in a top resort, right next to the Festkogl bahn and a friendly, relaxed and informal hotel - this is where to go :-))

  • Liked — Relaxed and Informal yet wonderful service and gourmet dinners
  • Disliked — Reading bad reviews before I went - they were way off the mark!

We have just returned from our third visit to Obergurgl this winter but our first to the Deutschmann. Having read the previous reviews I was a little concerned at where we were staying but I was pleasantly surprised on our arrival. The owners greeted us with a smile and were efficient and helpful. Yes, the decor for some tastes maybe a little old-fashioned but it was nicely done and this is the Alps not London! The reception and bar area were clean and large enough to accommodate all the children that were there - of which four were mine. We had two triple rooms on the second floor overlooking the Festkogelbahn. The skibus stopped here every 10 minutes from 9.00am onwards and was two stops into the centre. The rooms were a good size and spotlessly clean with comfortable beds, tv, small balcony and adequate storage space. They weren't contemporary in design - but hey who cares, all you do is sleep there so does it really matter what colour the curtains are? I'm more concerned about the skiing!!! The bathrooms were modern both with bath/shower etc and towels were changed almost daily. The hotel had a great spa with Jacuzzi and sauna. My children looked forward to getting back after a days skiing, sitting in the bar and sampling one of the many Austrian cakes etc that were on offer, then relaxing in the Jacuzzi before dinner. The four course meal in the restaurant was plentiful and good quality. There was a childrens alternative if you wanted it, but mine ate the same as the adults. The waiters were helpful - not all with beaming smiles, but always polite. Our evenings were spent sitting in the bar relaxing after a hard day on the slopes. The staff at the Deutschmann were very relaxed and tolerant of all the children - some of which were running around - but they never complained or asked anyone to prevent them from doing so. There were people smoking in the bar but because it was quite large, you could always find somewhere to sit that was away from the smoke - unlike the Hotel Muhle where we stayed at Christmas which was so smoky in the bar you couldn't breathe! I have stayed in some great 4* & 5* hotels all over the world. Having read some of the previous reviews it does make me think that there is no pleasing some people. The Deutschmann was a really nice hotel with good facilities and helpful staff. We will stay here again next year on one of three visits to Obergurgl. As for the resort, it is one of the highest in Austria and the snow is guaranteed from November to the beginning of May. I don't know where the man in one of the previous reviews was skiing, but we were in Obergurgl for half term in February and there was more snow that almost any other resort in Austria. The ski school is fantastic with great instructors, this is really important for the children - mine are 3, 6, 12 & 16 and they all ski. Obergurgl is a great resort and the Deutschmann a good hotel. Don't be put off by the previous reviews.
