“Excellent Top of the Range Hotel”
Reviewed March 23, 2012

We had booked through Inghams to stay at the Sportiv (we stayed in the Sportiv last year and really enjoyed the Sportiv which was great value). On check-in we were surprised to be told we'd been upgraded to the Crystal Hotel so we did the 2 minute walk over the road and on check-in given complimentary bubbly, our bags were taken to our room, beautiful room with balcony. We were impressed from start to finish with the Crystal. The quality of service is excellent with nothing too much trouble. The convenience of the boot room, Festgogel gondola, ski hire shop and beautiful spa makes it a perfect location. I would rate this hotel as good as any top rated London hotel. If I had to find a complaint, it would only be that the Crystal has no traditional Austrian features to it. I personally like the old traditional Austrian chalet style of buildings and fittings. This is a preference rather than a moan! Thanks to all the staff in the Crystal our stay was perfect.

We stayed with 2 young children. Were surprised to be upgraded to a suite on arrival and greeted with bubbly and juice for the kids. The room we had was in the older block but was lovely, recently re-furbished, flat screen TV's, quilts, robes, slippers, mini bar (can ask at reception for kettle and cups).

The pool area was gorgeous. Kids loved the outside pool. Breakfast had the biggest choice possible and dinner was 5/6 course every night chosen from menu in the morning. The kids had a buffet or you could order anything and they would cook it. The food was a la carte, which was lovely but after day 4 I craved a stew or plain steak! Although my kids were well behaved I couldnt completely relax in the restaurant as its not really comfortable for young children. We had the same table and waiter every night who was brilliant, remembering kids names and fav drinks etc. I also liked that you could order a bottle of wine and they would keep it for next day if not finished.

It really is one of the best hotels Ive stayed in. Great boot room next to Gondala. Ski in/out. 3 min walk to ski school. Ski school really good. Lovely little resort would go back.

Ok hotel at one end of obergurgl. Bizarrely no ironing board in room and not even one to use anywhere. Amazing in this day and age. Even a Premier Inn would have an ironing board.

We have just returned from a great half term week in the Crystal hotel. Last year we stayed in the poorer relation, the Sportiff, which enjoys the same spa facilities, but nothing like the food and room quality. The location of this hotel is suburb, the hotel links to the boot room, which leads through the ski shop to the Festgoglbahn lift. We had a suite and a large double for the 3 kids in the "old side". These rooms have been renovated last year and are not "old" or "basic" as is described. Only let downs were the poor service in the bar and the absence of free water and tea/coffee making facilities in the room, which one would expect at these prices.

Room Tip: Rooms 307 and 308 are great for 2 adults and 3 kids

We arrived at the hotel after a long and tiring trip and were welcomed with a complimentary drink at reception before being taken up to our rooms: all we wanted was water but it was a nice touch and set the tone for the rest of our stay. We were well looked after from start to finish and felt like we were being treated to something special. Our room for the week was a very comfortable and clean twin room with a balcony which was very quiet: there is no vehicular traffic at night, but the rooms also seemed well insulated. We then relaxed in the hotel spa for the afternoon - the first of many - which, like the hotel itself, is modern, stylish and luxurious and provides the perfect haven in which to unwind after a day's travelling or skiing. We stayed on a half-board arrangement which is in fact closer to full-board because not only are first-class breakfasts and dinners included (although the wines were rather overpriced), but so too is a high tea from 3 to 5 p.m. which comprises a mixture of small savoury and sweet, hot and cold, dishes. The latter is served in a lovely bar/lounge area with a real fire and wifi. In fact one of our only gripes with the hotel was that the wifi connection was poor, but this mattered little as a wired connection was available in our room. The staff were for the most part very friendly and helpful, and it seemed typical of the place that we ended up spending half a day skiing/boarding with our charming young waiter from Germany, Marcel, who typified the charm and professionalism of the whole place. For skiers the hotel is very well connected indeed: the hire shop is beneath the hotel and one of the main lifts, from the top of which the other skiing areas in Obergurgl and Hochgurgl can all be accessed is right outside the back door. If you want a traditional chalet style and more modestly priced hotel then this one may not be for you, but with that sole caveat we cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. If we return to Obergurgl - a probability - we will definitely return here.

Room Tip: Single rooms are near the lift.

We are just waiting in the bar for our lift back to the airport and are really, really sad to be going. This is our first time to Obergurgl although have been to different resorts in Austria for a number of years. The Crystal is a great hotel and we have had a superb time from start to finish. We were welcomed with some bubbles as soon as we arrived, the food has been consistently fab throughout our stay, I particularly loved the breakfast and the staff were great. The contemporary split level room with a balcony view over the piste was extremely comfortable, the spa (especially the adult only bit) was amazingly clean, fresh and relaxing and the decor was striking! It was so convenient strolling across the walkway to the ski depot where you could buy/hire your equipment without leaving the complex. The gondola is literally steps away from leaving the hotel. In regards to the skiing itself, after 6 full days here we have easiliy covered it all including neighbouring Hochgurgl, but it is really nice skiing with a good spattering of bars and some fun off piste areas. If you are after lots of après ski this isn't the place for you but it worked for us.

This is the second year we have stayed in The Crystal Hotel in Obergurgl. We love the direct access from the ski shop and ski lockers to the lift and the good quality dinner. The staff is very friendly. Nothing more to add since my last review. Perfect for a couples ski trip.
Only suggestion: providing wifi in the rooms.

Room Tip: The hotel also offers real single rooms, with single beds.
