“Location Location Location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 22, 2010

There are grander and more lavish hotels in Obergurgl but I doubt if any of them are as homely or friendly as the Mathiesn. I recently stayed there for a week's pre-Christmas skiing travelling from the UK via Innsbruck with a friend. We arranged our transfers to the resort by Otztal Shuttle. The Mathiesn was a natural choice from the Obergurgl.com website as it was one of the few hotels we made enquiries with that offered double rooms for single occupancy and the only one willing to accept a Monday to Monday booking.

The hotel is in a prime location in the centre of the village at the base of the Rosskarbahn chairlift and the Hohe Mut gondola. As if the location of the Mathiesn wasn't easy enough for us, there are 2 ski hire shops in the immediate vicinty where we left our equipment at the end of the ski day.

We were warmly welcomed by Frau Petra Gruner whose small team looked after us well all week. My large room (210) was front facing with a snow covered balcony and overlooked the local Spar convenience store across the road (the only shop in Obergurgl that isn't a sports store!). The bed was the typical Austrian twin mattress configuration with separate duvets and was comfortable enough although I couldn't seem to get the perfect pillow combination. It had 2 chairs and a coffee table and plenty of storage and hanging space. There is an excellent flat screen TV with channels from all over Europe including BBC1 and BBC2, useful for checking up on the travel chaos back in the UK. There was a separate bathroom with over bath shower and WC both immaculately clean and fully functioning with plenty of hot water available at any time of the day. There are sauna and steam room facilities available in the basement which looked very nice but I didn't use them and there is also a children's play room.

We were on half board and enjoyed our food all week. The best description of the style of food is probably homestyle cooking with flair, so at one end of the spectrum we had chicken noodle soup and at the other a clever zucchini-crevette lasagnette. There were 5 courses available every night with a choice of 3 mains, having made your choice the previous day. An excellent starter would be followed by a wholesome soup, a visit to the salad buffet then your main course and dessert. Despite trying to resist the salad buffet in an attempt to reduce my intake, I found myself drawn to it every night as our table was right beside it! I did however manage to turn down a couple of desserts. Breakfast was typically Austrian buffet style with fresh rolls, hams, cheeses, spreads, jams, cereals, yoghurts and juices. There was also scrambled eggs and bacon available every day. Too much temptation really. The hotel has a small pub attached to it and a non-residents restaurant which were both just opening for the ski season proper as we were leaving.

All in all the Mathiesn is the perfect hotel in the perfect location for a ski trip stay in Obergurgl.
