Reviewed January 20, 2012

I have just got back from a week staying at the fabulous chalet christophorus and I feel that I have to really sing it's praises.
My group consisted of 26 people so it was a mission to organise it however as soon as we arrived life was easy. Staff were excellent. They were really friendly and they couldn't have been more helpful. The chalet was huge and very clean and quiet. It was also well furnished and cosy which is quite rare in a chalet holiday.
The Food was excellent and there was a good choice of wines.
The slopes are right outside the door with a drag lift that takes you to the top of the nursery slope. From here you can ski to the gondola or stay on the nursery slope (this was perfect for the beginners in our group).
Having skied for over 25 years I am a competent skier and I couldn't fault the on piste and off piste skiing options. There is plenty to keep you occupied whatever your level.
Après ski is very good and the neder hutte is a must. Dancing on the tables was great fun and the ski down after was a good laugh.
In town the barrel bar is worth a visit as the bar is simply made inside of 3 huge barrels. Here you can play the hammer stump game which is the craziest thing you will have ever seen. Josl bar is next door and this is the place to go to party.
Finally the night tobogganing is a must. We all loved it! I cannot fault the chalet or the resort. We were definately 26 very happy customers.

The chalet is in a great location right next to the nursery slopes .
The team there this year is really great .Andrew the chef was at a chalet we stayed in last winter and as soon as we saw him we knew the food would be good .Callum his assistant was great too a real font of knowledge always helpful and friendly.
It's not a pretty chalet and the rooms are pretty basic but clean and appear to be freshly decorated .The issues mentioned last year seem to have been addressed . Ski total have it rated as 4 star and this is deceiving I would give it 3 at the most. The lack of a lounge does detract from the normal chalet atmosphere . The dining room is set out in small tables which makes it harder to mix it's more like a small hotel.
Obergurgl is a small resort . If you are an experienced skier it is easy to ski most of the runs in a day two at most even with hochgurgl included .The mountain restaurants are very good we loved David's Hut and the Mountain Star.
We had a fab holiday met some really lovely people but would not go back .

We stayed here during the second week of December at the beginning of the 2011/12 season so were not 100% sure what we would get both in terms of accommodation and snow - we were not disappointed with either.

The accommodation is run by Ski Total, as a hosted chalet but I say that in a loose sense as it is in fact a bit like a hotel with rooms and a dining area. One of the rooms was set aside as a lounge but there was nothing cosy about it like the communal lounge in traditional “ski chalet”. This did not however spoil the Chalet atmosphere as guests would gather in the dining room for pre-dinner canapés before sitting down for a 3 course meal. The Ski Total staff, comprising 2 chefs and 3 hosts who did a fine job especially as this was the first season / week for the 3 hosts. The food was varied and there was plenty of red and white wine that was always replaced when the bottle emptied. Breakfast always had a hot option plus more traditional cereals and continental.

Our room (41) was a very good size located on the top floor overlooking the slopes. It had 2 Austrian singles (that’s effectively a double bed if you don’t know!), a sofa bed and a separate toilet and bathroom with a good size bath and pleanty of hot water. The one thing everybody seemed to moan about was the pillows, which are very thin. We also found our room stuffy, even with a window open. There is a very good boot room, with drying facilities and ski racks. The “chalet” has a no outdoor shoe policy so remember to take something to wear indoors.

The Christophorus is located about 5 minutes walk outside of the main village centre but is right on the edge of the nursery slop so it is ski in – ski out, but to get to the cable car you need to take the drag and then go down a short (but steep) slope which was may be a problem to some especially if icy as it was our week, alternatively you can reach it in a short walk.

We found the village very limiting just ski shops and restaurants and very expensive. Unless you took your own lunch up, there was nowhere for those on a budget. We ate on the mountain every day and lunch was unusually about 10 Euros without alcohol but it was all very good and big portions which you could share.

The Nederhutte has a great après with a live band 3 nights (I think) a week when the atmosphere is fantastic, but you do have ski back down but the slopes which are flood lit.
We felt the slopes in Obergurgl were limited in number and most go to Hochgurgl which is included in your pass. Although the skiable area has a number of blues many are narrow and might be a bit challenging for some. You can include a day in Solden which has a much bigger ski area and worth the 30 min bus trip.

In summery – the Cristophorou is well placed on the slope, it’s not your traditional “ski chalet” but we had a good time and thought it was value for money. This was our first time is Austria and didn’t rate Obergurgl much so I doubt we will go back but we would look at Solden next time which is much bigger.

A good position on the slopes was about all this chalet had going for it. The food was average and took well over two hours every night. Afternoon tea was more like supper as it never appeared until 4.45/5.00pm. Quite often you had to go and fill up the water jugs to get a cup of tea or coffee as they were not already prepared. Chef was late on at least two occasions for breakfast. The mugs were filthy. There was fresh fruit on the first day and then virtually nothing until the last day. But worse than any of the above was the 'Sofa Bed' in our triple room. I defy anyone to get to sleep on this, it was only 2.6" wide, rock hard and had buttons all they way down. How they expect an adult to sleep on this is beyond me and to pay full price for the privilege . All the chalet staff could offer was an extra duvet to sleep on - not good enough in my opinion, they should have a proper mattress to sleep on.. I could go on as there were many other disappointments with this chalet, but by far the worse was 'the 'Sofa Bed'.

Skiing holidays are not cheap and when we arrived at what we had been told was 4-star accommodation we were very disappointed. The sofa bed, which one of us had to sleep on, was 2 ft wide and rock hard with large buttons. It has been made up with just a threadbare sheet. I defy anyone to sleep on that. The only solution they could offer was a couple of duvets folded in half to try and make the "bed" softer. The sheets on all the beds were threadbare.

The staff were very sweet, but very inexperienced and had obviously had very little training in the hospitality business (which we all work in, as it happens). Breakfast was never ready. The chef overslept on 3 of the mornings. The mugs for tea and coffee were FILTHY and you had to pick and choose to find a useable one. A member of staff dropped a fork on the (non to clean) floor and just picked it up and put it back on the plate. I mentioned this a suggested a clean one would be better.

At tea time the cakes were NEVER out when we got back from skiing and more often than not we had to unstack the chairs from the dining tables. The water jugs to fill the kettle were always empty and we would all just sit and wait for cakes etc to finally appear.
Dining was a very very long business. Exhausting after a long day's skiing.

The supposed guests' lounge was an unused suite upstairs and had pizza boxes and empty cans scattered on the table which were there most of the week. We pointed it out to the staff when we left. Finally, the rooms were not serviced properly at all and we constantly had to ask (as did other guests) for more toilet paper.

Generally a very disappointing experience, I'm afraid.

I feel compelled to write as my friends and I had a very disappointing experience at Chalet Christophorus.
I was travelling with my regular ski buddies; we are very familiar with the chalet set up, and I have been a chalet girl in the past.
We had booked a continental twin/triple room with (single sofa bed) and were shocked to discover the so called ‘sofa bed’ was a hard covered bench with a series of decorative lumpy buttons sewn into the cover with merely a thread bare sheet covering it. There was no mattress to put on top, and the bench itself was barely 2’6” wide…not enough for a child to sleep on comfortably, let alone an adult. Just not conducive for a good nights sleep after a hard days skiing. The girl in charge of housekeeping was at a loss and could only offer a couple of duvets to put on the bench as a solution to the lack of mattress. I am afraid this was quite unacceptable. (Photos of this so called sofa bed bench attached)

There follows a list of the other problems with the chalet:

*The bedding was threadbare on all beds and clearly in need of replacement. (photo attached)

*Breakfast was laid out late on most days – coffee, bread ham and cheese laid out after we had arrived, there was fruit only on day one and muesli only on our last day. Never saw a croissant or pain au chocolat. The Chef was late on 3 occasions which meant the hot breakfast choice was not an option if you wanted to make the first ski lift as we did.
*The cups had filthy stains all over them
(photos of the offending items attached)
*Cutlery, that was dropped on the floor, was put back in the try for use by the waitress rather than replacing it with clean utensils. There were never enough glasses and the kettles and water jugs were always empty

The dining room was often unprepared for tea time with a lack of water for the kettles and with chairs that had been put up on the tables after breakfast that had to be put back in place by us the guests.

*Dinner was invariably a much slower drawn out affair than we are accustomed to in other chalets with unimaginative tepid food served on cold plates. The standard was way below what one would normally expect for this price bracket holiday.

*There was supposed to be a guest sitting room; we only found this towards the end of our holiday since it was actually two unused bedrooms which had dirty bottles and empty pizza cartons littering the place – we were told by fellow guests that they had remained there for most of the week of our holiday. There certainly wasn't seating for up to 34 guests and cozy, it wasn’t! (photos attached)

*Toilet paper seemed to be in short supply and had to be asked for on more than one occasion

*The lack of WiFi was a surprise to most of the guests, even though admittedly, it is not advertised.

Clearly this chalet did not live up to its 4 star rating; the staff, whilst quite pleasant, were very young and sorely in need of some training and supervision and it appeared that rushing for the ski slopes took priority.

I wrote to Ski Total/Esprit and received a very lukewarm and dismissive response and was left with a feeling that my complaints were going to be largely ignored.
In these days of economic recession and huge competition amongst holiday providers, it is astonishing that this company feel disinclined to take on board the comments of their clients.
(I see the sofa bed problem was highlighted in a review back in 2009)
I certainly won’t be recommending this company or using them again. My hard earned money will be spent with a company that actually cares and offers much more.

all the staff were a bubbly, friendly bunch who did anything that was asked of them.the food was ok but nowhere near the standard of previous ski total chalets.in saying that we didnt go hungry, and the location and fab weather outweighed any disappointment with the chalet.no cosy sitting room as in some previous chalets to chat about the day, just the dining room which doesnt lend itself to social evenings with fellow skiers.dont get lumbered with room number 30, just two single beds almost end to end, with one small wardrobe and the room is full, and there is no discount on the price-be warned our friends were not impressed!
