“A nice Hotel which I would stay at again.”
Reviewed March 7, 2010

This appears to be a Family run Hotel, It is very conveniently located for the Nursery Slopes and the Gondola lift to the main Skiing area. The Rooms were a decent size and well if simply furnished. We were on Half board and the buffet breakfast had a good selection ranging from fruit to cereals to meats/cheese/ eggs, enough to keep me Skiing all day. You got to select your evening meal at breakfast which speeded things up nicely too, The evening meal was four courses starting with soup then salad bar followed by main course and desert every meal was well presented and reasonable portion sizes too!
There is a Swimming pool which is outdoor, so what you say, well it's a Ski resort and if you've never had a swim with snow all around and snow settling on your head you should give it a go.
There is also a Sauna which we did not try but was in the same part of the complex as the pool so if of the same standard would be good.
The only negative from our perspective is that our room smelt of stale cigarette smoke on arrival, this appears to be mainly because everyone seemed to smoke and it is still allowed in bars, the concept of Non Smoking hasn't taken root here yet WHY?
Despite that it is a nice Hotel with competent Staff providing good food and accomodation. Altough tempted to keep quiet about it, I would recommend this hotel as a good base for a Skiing break.
Neiderau itself is pretty much as described in that it isa fairly quiet place from a nightlife perspective, which is a plus if you want to Ski and don't want to be kept up all night by revellers!

Just come back from Hotel Simmelwirt in Neiderau, Austria with the family. Talk about a perfect location, just a few yards from the slopes, the ski hire and the ski schools.
The staff were friendly and our room was clean and spacious, with not one, but two balconies. The one thing that surprised us the most was the inclusive meals, every one was superb and although the choice was limited each night, as you'd expect from half board, the quality was excellent and there was always a vegetarian option.
The heated outdoor pool was awsome, just what the doctor ordered after a day on the slopes, with a sauna and spa to boot. All in all I would highly recommend Hotel Simmelwirt and I'm booking it again for next year.

Arrived at the hotel 7 hrs late after missed flight, all I wanted was some good food and a comfy bed, the Simmerlwirt provided both.
I booked this hotel as part of a last minute ski deal and I would have had a hard time choosing anything better near the price as confirmed when I read other sites reviews.
Ski School across the road, Nursery slopes 100 yds, main lift 200yds.
My room was a simple single room with balcony, tv, wc & shower and after 2 days hot water as well. The bed was kiddie size but after a day on the slopes more than comfortable.
Most of the staff spoke very good English and they were always courteous and helpful.
Before a full day skiing its important to get a good breakfast inside you, and to a point the Simmerlwirt provided this whilst not breaking away from the typical European fare of meat, bread and cheese. Cereal, fruit juice and excellent coffee were also served.
It was at breakfast you choose your main course of your restaurant quality 4 course evening meal.
First course was traditional style soup, always varied always excellent, always unusual. A buffet salad/cold meat course again provided plenty of choice and quality.
The main courses were of the highest standard I have ever been served in a hotel, again mostly specialities of the region were on offer including, pork, veal, meat fondue and also a special farmers market night with various meats carved from the bone. The only disappointment was the dessert course, simple light and of small size, still after the other courses I guarantee you will not leave your table feeling hungry.
Best of all returning to the hotel with tiring aching limbs for 3 hours yoa can avail yourself of the use of the excellent recently opened heated outdoor pool, baking hot sauna and boiling steam room. (note the steamroom & sauna operate the usual Austrian mixed nude policy) . Hey but when in Rome!!!

2 couples stayed at the Hotel Simmerlwirt in Niederau, Austria on 13th January 07. We booked our holiday through Thomas Cook and Nielsen. The week before our flight our hotel got cancelled. we should have been in Hotel Alpenland but got moved to Hotel Simmerwirt. I was actually pleased about this, as although we were marginally further from the slopes (not ski to door) we had a swimming pool and sauna. On the whole the hotel is pretty good. It is described as having an indoor/outdoor pool. This is not true. All of the pool is outdoors aprt from the first 2 square feet. This is actually quite refreshing and ou do get a wonderful view of the mountains. The sauna, steam and sanaraium rooms are a welcome facility. Austrians don't wear clothes in them though, so if you do like seeing naked flesh stay away. Although most people did wear their swimclothes or a towel most of the time. Disappointingly the pool and sauna area was only open 4pm-7pm.
The hotel rooms were a good size and I think everyone has a balcony (great for keeping the beers cold). Rooms could do with a safe. Thye have phones and a hairdryer. We had a separate toilet and bathroom with shower.
The food is very tasty but basic at the same time. Breakfast was pretty poor. We went half board. Breakfast consisted of a selection of cereals, bread rolls, toast, jams and cold meats/cheeses. This was tasty but a bit boring everyday. There was also some hot food available such as scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. However, this didn't seem th be there everyday and was never topped up. Once it was gone it was gone. I personally think if breakfast is from 8am-10am it should be re-filled at all times. At breakfast you have to choose what you want to eat for dinner. Starters were always soups and mains were normally a meat dish, a fish dish and a veg dish. We also had past one night. The dinners were very nice and you got a small pudding too. Dinner was between 6pm and 7.30pm. One of the worst things I found about Austria was ther smoke. The bar in our hotel was constantly filled with disgusting smoke and had no windows open. There was no smoking in the restaurant but you couldn't enjoy a meal in the bar at lunch time if you were a non smoker. This was a problem at all eateries and bars in Austria.
The food in Hotel Austria was excellent and we ate their twice at night. 140 euros for for people and 3 courses each inc drinks. Defiantely order the pancakes for pudding! You get two with loads of chocolate sauce and ice cream!
Unfortunatley we didn't have much snow (the least in 9 or more years according to one local) so we only skied in Niederau once (one the first day). The nursery slope was icy and it wasn't much better up the top with a lot of lifts closed, but I could imagine it would have been terrific for beginners and easy intermediates with a big dump of snow on it. But we didn't let the lack of snow get us down, after all we hadn't gone all that way just to talk about it.
We got a free bus pass from our Nielsen rep and skied at Auffach which is about 20mins on a bus (catch it opposite the ski hire shop). Auffach is a bigger ski area and has some good looking runs. Unfortunately it was a bit tricky for us beginners as the red runs were very icy (watch out for Red 2 and 2a - they get dangerous when icy!).
If you book any trips do so at the shop in between the bank and Spar. They charge 7 euros for tobagonning, 12euros for a horse pulled sleigh ride and 32 euros for a trip to Salzburg. Nielson charged 20euros, 20euros and 37euros respectively.
The toboganning is really good fun and not just for kids. Sleigh ride was very scenic but lasted a bit too long for me. 35mins one way, 1hour stop at a small bar and 35mins back on the sleigh. Worth doing for 12euros but wrap up as it gets cold just sitting there! The trip to Salzburg is very interesting and you get a 2hour guided tour and then about 3 hours to do your own thing. You get to see the castle (from Sound Of Music) and Mozarts birth place. Ask for a room on the side of the hotel that is facing away from the church. It chimes at some bizzare times and goes all through the night and can be too loud and random.
Niederau is a beautiful place and as long as you get some snow you'll have a great time. The hotel and most of the food/nightlife is basic but good quality. I don't go back to the same place twice as there are so many other places in the worlld to see but I would definatley recommend this hotel and resort if you want something clean, comfortable and a good time in general.

We have just returned from a Travelsphere holiday to Hotel Simmervert in Niederau. Apart from a 15 hour delay at the airport, we had a wonderful time. It was a super saver trip with a very cheap meal deal which we thought would mean a very basic trip, but we were more than pleasantly surprised. The Hotel was lovely - very clean, a large room with a balcony providing a superb view. The staff were there when you needed them and the food was good. Our only gripe was that we were plagued by flies - we think this was to do with the cows in the pasture next to us!
Our rep Seppi was very good and as he was a local, had lots of interesting and humorous anecdotes to tell us.
There wasn't much nightlife but we were happy to spend time in the bars with others from our holiday group.
The trips were very good and the sun shone on us, so after a poor start we came back feeling we'd had an excellent holiday in a country that we would love to return to - the landscape everywhere was spectacular.

Would thoroughly recommend the Simmerlwirt. One of the best positions in the village of Niederau for ski school meeting place, nursery slopes, gondola, ski hire shop, and village centre. We had a huge room for the 3 of us (me, husband and teenage son) - Austrian beds enormous! Equally huge bathroom. Fantastic views of slopes from our room and balcony. Other rooms slightly different from ours but still nice. Church bells did seem to ring out at all hours - night time as well! Food good most nights (pity additional salad the same every night). Public rooms very attractive - good family feel. A mixture of British, Dutch and German guests. Manager very helpful - after my e-mail he wished my son a Happy Birthday on our arrival. Useful basement heated ski storage area. Niederau very attractive village with 2 supermarkets (one has cafe), gift shop, bars, few restaurants, internet cafe, a couple of discos (very quiet when we were there). Would recommend the sleigh ride - the Pension we stopped at did lovely homemade gluhwein! - make sure ride doesn't clash with ski school presentation evening (held at the Simmerlwirt). My ski instructor overestimated my ability and took my confidence away with difficult red runs - I hadn't skiied for 30 years and then only twice before! We had perfect snow conditions and sunny weather in February. Will certainly stay at the Simmerlwirt again.

We went to the Simmelwirt in Niederau, Austria, in 2002. It is a small alpine skiing village with lots of rustic charm, plenty of snow (on one of the higher peaks), sunshine, no crime and an excellent and patient ski school for both adults and kids. More advanced skiers may find some of the slopes a bit limiting.
We stayed at the Simmelwirt Hotel, half board. It is a family run hotel, very efficient, clean, with good sized rooms, fresh mountain spring water straight to your en-suite, reasonably priced, fine food. It sits across the road from the slopes, the ski school meeting place and the ski hire shop. We came home and booked immediately again for 2003. This is only a three star hotel so services are limited, but for the 'just like home' feeling you can't better it.
