Well we returned from a fabulous week at the SportHotel Ellmau at the end of feb. The village and the surrounding areas were perfect with some breathtaking views. The slopes were 100 yards from the main building which made the holiday so easy with our 2 young children. The nursery slope area was a god send for us and our little boy who moved onto the blu runs within 2 days, the magic carpet and nursery slopes were very quiet and we were allowed to use the area freely even though we wasnt booked in ski school. The Hotel was stunning from the outside and even better once inside, the hotel has had some refurbishment work done downstairs and it looks fab. When we arrived at the hotel having booked the package 12 months previous i was a little annoyed that a cot hadnt been placed in our room even though the tour operator had requested one and i had emailed the hotel directly on 2 occasions to make sure the request had been placed. The hotel were very quick to put a cot into our room but when my wife inspected the mattress in the cot it turned out to be a folded up quilt with no hard base allowing the quilt to push through the slates at the bottom. When i went to reception to request a mattress i was told there wasnt one available so housekeeping came to our room with an arm full of blankets and towels to make up a mattress( not a 4 star service in my opinion) After 3 days a mattress still hadnt been supplied so i got in touch with our holiday rep(what a superstar) who instructed the hotel to source a cot mattress immediately which was done by that evening. Also a big negative point was that smoking was allowed in the downstairs of the hotel in designated areas which didnt help as it was an open plan hotel, it was very unpleasant and got very smokie by early evening. The rooms were adequate for a week and generally in good order, the food in the hotel was fantastic from the breakfast through to the evening meal, lots of choice and as much as you could eat, all of the staff that we came in direct contact with were very polite and helpful and very friendly towards our children. i loved the resort of ellmau and i wouldnt hesitate to return to the area but im afraid that whilst the hotel allows smoking in ant capacity then i wont be returning to the sporthotel ellmau!!

Room Tip: we were on the 3rd floor and all was good

We have been to Sporthotel for four years now, and more visits are planned. As a caveat, we have never stayed at the hotel itself, always in an apartment associated with the hotel, which are in a separate building. It is difficult to find a fault with the place. We travel to ski with our (now) teenage children, and an apartment is ideal for that. It is reasonably spacious, and the extra room is essential for drying and storing all the skiing kit. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are warm and the kitchenette is quite inadequate but usable (we don't use it). The hotel itself is very homely, and it is only 100 m away from the slopes. The best things about it are the food and the spa. Half-board is highly recommended. Dinner food is absolutely delicious, highly varied and plentiful. And the spa combines indoor and outdoor pools for children with an adult sauna area. And from this year they have free Wi-Fi. As an anecdote -- this year we spotted a lovely room in the dining area, which looked quite special, and we requested that next year we be seated there. Hotel staff said that no, that would not be possible, since this room is for regular guests. To our question, why wouldn't we be considered regular guests after four visits, the answer was: our regular guests come here for 25-30 years. So way more to go for us...

The quality of food was excellent as usual. The staff are always friendly and polite. This was our second visit and we decided to get married over there on Valantines day (2013). The nearest place to register your marraige is in Soll. We used a wedding planner called Suzie Dangl from Kitzbuhel and everything went exactly to plan. The hotel staff surpised us by decorating our room with balloons, our table with flowers and candels. The owners, Unterlechner family, presented us with a bottle champagne and a card. We did pay for an up-grade on our room which is worth doing if you want that little bit extra. The pool extends outside the building which offers the unusual experience of outdoor swimming in a snowy environment. We found the jacuzzi and steam lovely to relax in after our time on the slopes. The hotel is conveniently located for both slopes and ski buses. We enjoy staying in this hotel so much we have already booked to go back in 2014.

Room Tip: On our first visit our room was close main enterance near the lift on the second floor overlooking t...

Lots of things to like about this place. Next to the slopes, great dinning, etc. The problem if you need to get work done is the internet. It is a problem. Plus when you drop back to mobile for your internet, it does not always work. So great place that I don't want to go back to since I really, really need my internet.

Just returned from a weeks skiing in Ellmau/Skiwelt. Decided to treat ourselves to this hotel over cheaper others...so glad we did. The hotel is beautiful. We had a deluxe room in the main hotel part (as supposed to the annex which is about 150yrds away). Although it wasnt one of the updated rooms (little bit gutted) it was still a great room. Very spacious and a V large balcony overlooking the Wilder mountains. I dont know what other reports are on about with staff. EVERY member of staff was really happy and said Hi as you passed them in the HUGE hotel. The food was fantastic. Every meal was beautiful. My wife has a pepper allergy and they did everything they could to ensure her personalised meal was OK. We had visits from the matrea-D about 4 times over the week to ensure all was OK with her meal. Breakfast were buffets - huge array of food (hot & cold). But the mains were the hi-light: 5 courses!! You choose the meal at breakfast so it it ready for you. The chocolate fountain was great!! Also, bar prices are pretty good. We had a wine spritzer and a medium beer and they were 3euros each. Not bad for ski resort and in a hotel. Had no problem asking for tap water as well (and some nights thats all we drank and staff happily served it to us.). There are about 5 restaurants/eating areas but you have a designated table in 1 of them,
The swimming pool/spa area is great. Great pool with built in jacuzzi grotto as well as outdoor pool (additional outdoor pool in the summer) Wasnt the hottest pool, but once in you warm up. The main jacuzzi downstair (together with the 7 saunas) are really nice. But beware, its naked down there....very naked! We went in swimming shorts/bikini and no-one said anything, but all Aurstrians etc go starkers! (close your eyes for certain guests!) Hotel is located just infront of some drag lifts which lead to a chair lift. However, if you want to get to the main runs of skiwelt you are best off getting the bus which stops right outside the hotel every 30mins. The boot room was a bit average - just one large room where everyone left their skis etc. No individual lockers per room. (You could pay for a "locked" section but the rep advised it was safe...you did need a code to get into the room, and our skis were fine during stay), but Im surprised each room didnt have a locker. Wifi is a bit temperamental but worked well (think it may have been down for a day or 2 as worked fine when it was up). Not sure if would return to Ellmau soon as like to try new places, but if we did, we would deff stay in this hotel. Pay a little extra and treat yourself (also, got fresh towells every day...always nice!)

Room Tip: If you have a food allergy, email the hotel ahead. They make a note against your table number and wi...

We have visited Ellmau many times and staying in the Pension Claudia next door, the Ellmau Alm, part of the hotel complex is extremely connvenient for drinks and entertainment.

The building is tradittionally constructed with lots of ambiance. There is nightly entertainment, and food is served until late if required.

This facility is well regarded by the locals and indeed has featured on several 'Weinachten' ( Christmas) shows on Barvarian television, which we have enjoyed back in England.

Several years ago I had a bad experience. Initially a barman tried to get an extra ten Euros out of me, until I spoke in German to him, and asked for his Hauptman ( Manager), where upon my correct change money was instantly handed to me, accompanied by a look of suprise at me speaking his language. Later that week some friends were overcharged for drinks that they had not had and it all got a bit silly.

I thought that this was a one off but alas, visiting in January this year I was again short changed, having had one Weissbeer and had to request my money back. The waitress seemed quite put out by my request, as she tried to walk off.

Again, I thought this to be a one off. However upon ordering dinner and drinks on our last day the same thing happened.

The staff are missing a trick here because good service is always rewarded, and the presumption that change is seen as fair game leads not only to resentment but the loss of a tip.

I have been visiting Austria for twenty five years and in the past this sort of thing would never happen. Honesty, service and friendliness have been the hallmark of the Austrians and the main reason to visit this wonderful country as many dozens of times that we have.

The staff attitude at the Ellmau Alm and unfortunately also at the Bar during the same week do no credit to themselves or their beautiful country.

Shame on them and be careful with your hard earned cash

We went back to the Sporthotel for a couple of days across New Year's Eve. Our stay last summer had been pleasant so we decided to see Ellmau with the snow.
Again, our stay has been most enjoyable. Ellmau is a tiny village in Tirol, set in a wonderful valley with amazing mountains. The atmosphere is relaxed, there are nice little shops, excellent skying structures and trails in the woods; everything is well organized and user friendly.
Again, we were most satisfied after our stay at the Sporthotel. Perhaps my previous note about the nonsense of having you pay for a wi-fi connection has been heard: it is now free of charge. The Hotel was packed, but never we got the impression of the personnel straining to cope with the guests; on the contrary, everyone was extremely friendly and willing. This time, having been late bookers, the room was not of the renovated ones, still the furniture was new, the bathroom and carpeting spotless, and a huge 40" Sony TV a pleasure to watch.
Unfortunately in Austria it is still possible to smoke in public areas, so for us nonsmokers and no longer used to sit at a bar where everybody does it is somewhat of an annoyance, but this is something the Hotel Management cannot be held responsible for. On the overall we were so glad to be there again, we plan to become habitual guests.
