This hotel may have had four stars 20 years ago - a typical case of having made too much money too easily. Breakfast is average with buns so dry that you'd rather give them to the birds. Stay miles away from the fish. The only reasonable meal was the pork. The personell is unfriendly, especially at the reception where the boss also does duty, when she doesn't stink up the eating area with cigarette smoke.

There is no WiFi!

A person in another group had taken a fall, and wanted to use the sauna for his muscles. We were told that the sauna did not work, while guests arriving a few minutes later were told that it would be opened a little later. We have reason to believe that they did not want to open the sauna because the showers are in the same area, and on leaving day, they want 12 Euro for a shower. This would have been difficult to control if they had opened the sauna.

We had a shortski in januari 2013 with Sunweb. The food is really budget without extras but tasty.
The offered services are standard, but what bothered us was a extra charges of 12 euro's if we wanted to use the shower in the hotel on the day of departure after skiing.

We didn't have particularly high expectations for this late booking ski trip over New Year's Eve , but we were very pleasantly surprised.
The hotel is quite small yet with a full range of facilities. The service from the owners was excellent and left a lasting impression. I can see us returning !
As for the resort, I felt that the beginners area could do with better progression slopes but once capable of easy blues then the whole area was easily accessible. All runs red or blue could easily be marked blue. Ellmau also put on a good NYE show on the 'little' red. Very good and overall a good week.

We have been visiting Ellmau for many years and really love the village as a ski destination. Before we went skiing with our daughter, we stayed at the Alte Post. Four years ago we changed to the Hochfilzer hotel because they have a swimming pool and seemed a little bit more geared towards families. (see previous reviews)

This year we tried a number of times to contact Hochfilzer by e-mail but they didn't respond. And when we called them in August they were all booked. This was the reason to try out the Alte Post because both hotels are in a premium location in the heart of Ellmau.

Upon arrival we were a little disappointed by the fact that the woman at the reception was very rigid with the 15.00 check-in time, more so because at 15.00 clock she told us that the room wouldn't be ready for another 45 minutes. Because we wanted to do a little skiiing, it would have helped us a lot if she informed us earlier so we could have found another place to get into our ski gear.

The hotel room was traditional and some might say a little bit outdated but big with ample storage space and a nice terrace. It was very clean and well serviced and was perfect for our purpose and every day after skiing it felt like an oasis of rest.

We booked half board and both breakfast and diner were good. Dishes were nice most of the times. The waiter was friendly and fast and we thought he was doing a terrific job. One of the reasons we went to Hochfilzer was that they had a childrens' buffet. But at Alte Post our daughter could pick her choice from an a la carte children menu which was freshly prepared for her We prefered this over the childrens' buffet at Hochfilzer.

The ski room was really nice. Because Alte Post has a limited number of rooms, the ski room was never crowded.

One thing we really missed was Wifi: a hotel in this day and age has to have wifi. As regulars to Ellmau we are aware of the numerous events during the week. However, if you are a newcomer to Ellmau I would suggest you ask specifically at the reception desk because they don' t inform you pro-actively.

In general we were satisfied with the Alte Post and for next year it will be a difficult decision whether to go back to Alte Post or Hochfilzer. Both are in a great spot in town. At Hochfilzer you are treated like family (but the family has grown a little bit too big during X-mas and New Year and it looses some of its personal attention that we loved so much), at Alte Post you are treated more personal because of the smaller scale except at the reception desk which lacks the personal touch a little. Well, there are worse decisions to take!

First of all, the photo at the top of this page is misleading as it's not the Alte Post in Ellmau - it's the Alte Post in Grossarl.
We had a lovely week at this hotel from September 1st - 8th travelling with Inghams. Before we booked this holiday we made a short list of what we were looking for. Basically we wanted a small, family-run hotel, near or in the centre of a village with a balcony if possible, lots of good walking opportunities and the chance to take an excursion to Krimml Waterfall. The Alte Post ticked all the boxes and more.
We flew into Innsbruck from Edinburgh and arrived at the hotel about 9.00pm. We were welcomed warmly and told to take our luggage up to our room then to come back down for dinner. We weren't sure what to expect as we had arrived after the end of the usual meal time, but we were given two courses which was perfectly adequate.
Our room was very large with typical Austrian beds and we had a large balcony with a view of the Wilder Kaiser mountains on one side and the church and the Hartkaiserbahn on the other. There was a good-sized wardrobe with plenty room to store our clothes and there was even storage for our empty cases. Our en-suite bathroom was actually a separate bathroom and toilet. The rooms were a bit dated but very comfortable and spotlessly clean.
The food was good - at breakfast it was a buffet with cereal, fruit, yoghurt, rolls, bread, cold meats, cheeses, jams etc as well as fruit juice and tea/coffee. Dinner was four courses that always started with soup followed by a salad buffet. The main course (chosen at breakfast) was a choice of three dishes - usually two meat dishes and a vegetarian dish. We expected there to be a lot of pork on offer so it came as no surprise, but we also had the choice of chicken, beef, veal and fish. On one evening there was a Farmers' Buffet which was excellent - ham, pork, dumplings, potatoes etc. Another evening we had a dessert buffet. I'm surprised by the comments in the previous review about the lack of any kind of sauce. Over the week we had onion gravy, paprika sauce, cream sauce - it depended on what you ordered.
We never asked about the packed lunch advertised in the brochure so we don't know if it was available or not. If we were out walking for the day we usually went to the supermarket and bought items for a picnic lunch. Otherwise we ate lunch at one of the many restaurants in Ellmau. Our favourite was the Ellmauer Alm but we also liked the Bettina.
The Hotel Alte Post is in a perfect location in the centre of Ellmau and we were overwhelmed by the walking opportunities in the immediate area. The hotel staff were helpful and friendly. Our only complaint (and it's a small one) is that no-one explained to us that any drinks ordered with the evening meal have to be paid for before leaving the dining room. It wasn't mentioned on the first evening so we assumed that we would pay at the end of the stay. It created an uncomfortable situation on the second evening when we were told we had left without paying! It could so easily have been avoided if on the first night we'd been told the hotel policy.

Room Tip: Our room and balcony was to the side which was more private than those to the front of the hotel
