“Beautiful little town”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

Ellmau's location is very scenic, with great view of the Wilder Kaiser. The view is amazing on a beautiful day. Day trips to Kitzbuehel or Kufstein are recommended and a wonderful distraction. Skiing and hiking are plentiful. Hotel accommodation is generally expensive. In case of larger groups it is more cost effective to rent an apartment.

“Plenty of skiing!”
Reviewed March 24, 2014

If you want a quiet place to stay in Austria with no noisy apres-ski, Ellmau is a very good choice.

There are a variety of restaurants if you don't want to eat at your hotel and a well-stocked supermarket (Bipa) and a local equivalent of Boots the Chemists called Billa.

There are shops selling or hiring ski equipment and plenty of ski schools too, plus several places to buy hoilday souveniers etc.

There's a free* Ski Bus which takes you to the Hartkaiserbahn funicular railway giving you access to the mountain and links to the whole Wilder Kaiser Ski Welt skiiing area.

Although I travelled late in the season and there was an early spring which meant that lower slopes were losing their snow, there was still plenty of snow and skiing available on the upper pistes and they have snow making machines too to ensure good cover on the slopes.

The south facing slopes were best early on, but later they got very slushy and hard to ski. The north-facing slopes were icy in the morning, but improved later.

Mostly the runs are blues and reds, but they should be enough for all but the most committed skiiers.

There's also local WiFi hotspots which you should be able to get a guest pass for.

*The ski bus and other such amenities are free, but if you stay at a hotel there's a 2 euro per night "Tourist Tax" to cover them, however it's well worth the money.

Great place for families - ski welt is massive with loads of snow-making facilities. Lots to keep beginners and intermediates amused.
