“Family business, from the best kind...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 7, 2010

Just visited there for a long weekend season start skiing. I spotted out the hotel (tried the restaurant a couple of times) on previous stays in Zell am See, but this was the first time, they had vacancy. The hotel is a family run business, must have had a pretty impressive expansion during the past years, since they own most of the surrounding premises.

Location is a really big hit: Zell am See city center, at the edge of the pedestrian zone. Free parking in the garage under the appartement building. Both main square or the city center is only a few steps away. Zell am See ski slopes talstation; is not close, but accessible on foot, if the bottom slopes are open (were not yet).

Our rooms were in the hotel building, newly build or renovated rooms, in an excellent condition, cleanliness really meets the highest standards. Spacious bathroom with a separated toilette and a shower. Furnishing is nothing special, but far ok for its category. I personally liked the big wardrobe, there was enough space to put up all the stuff...

Breakfast: pretty good selection, was really satisfied with it.
Dinner: I am not really a half-board guy, really prefer eating out, but this time we were only boys and took the easiest way. 3 course menu, with a 2 option selection on the entree. Mainstream dishes, nothing special but a pretty good value for the 12euros.

There is also a sauna and relaxing area available, enjoyed it much after freezy wholeday skiing.. .

Overall we really had a high opinion on the family business style, continuous efforts are visible, both family members and staff are really nice we had a really good time there. Not to forget about their admirable practice of leaving the hotels reception desk for the prettiest family member, really worth a look for that reason too... :)

We stayed at the Gruner Baum for just over a week in eptember and had a great time. The hotel is in an excellent location, just off of the main square in the town. This does lead to a little noise at night but nothing major at all. Breakfast was very good with an excellent choice of fresh food and very helpful staff in the breakfast room. The rooms were very clean and modern with a flat screen TV and european satalite channels including several English channels. No kettle or fridge in the room. Reception staff always happy to help. The sauna area is a real treat. The perfect way to relax in a beautiful relaxing area of the hotel with amazing showers and it was almost always deserted. Also on our final day we left before breakfast was served. Eva, the receptionist, kindly refunded of the fee for breakfast that day.

I recent;y stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and can't recommend it to other travellers. First of all the room was the smallest I ever stayed in (prison cell like), below average decoration, located underneath the roof and very hot. Even more annoying was that the room was situated at the hotelside that was extremely noisy. Bars at the corner of the hotel kept producing loud music and screeming drunk people. Even my earplugs couldn't prevent me from having a very bad night. Then at early morning, the hotel staff produced much noice during their terrace construction activities. Second night the same scenario, with the extra bonus that at 7 in the morning, extremely loud machine noises errupted (pavement constructions?). Another dissapointment was my dinner there, below mediocre quality, not culinary at all (I could easily do better myself). The second evening I decided to eat somewhere else, which was a good decision. Most dissapointing at all was the attitude of most of the staff: unmotivated, unfriendly, not hospital; they even made you feel unwelcome. There was this atmosphere of 'hey, we're just doing our job for the money - your money!'. Only three positive exceptions to the rule: the breakfast, the sauna/welness department and to conclude with, the girl - I suppose Katharina- at the reception who was very 'nett' (nice). She earned the two points for hotel service, otherwise I would have given them zero...

We stayed here for New Years Eve and the following week, skiing in the day in both Zell and Kaprun. The hotel is a family run place and this gave it a more personal feel, making us very welcome.
The location was just what we wanted, in the centre of the town and only 5 minute walk to the lift. A big bonus was the parking space which was free and secure. Also the sauna was really good after a day on the slopes, and we seemed to have it to ourselves most of the time.
We booked this directly through the owners and they were very helpful, booking our ski passes for us as well. Have to say I can't fault the service.
We had no problem with noise and considering we were there for New Year thats pretty good.
Breakfast was a decent buffet and they have evening meals as well which we didn't try as we ate out most nights. All the restaurants around Zell were good including some really top authentic Austrian places.

We had an apartment at the Gruener Baum for 5 nights in August 2008 and could not have asked for better for what we were paying. We are a family of 4 so the apartment with a king sized bedroom, sofa bed in living room and single bed in smallish room off living room was perfect. Comfy beds, clean, very acceptable decorations/furniture, excellent parking facilities, right in the centre, well equiped.

Because we had an apartment we did a lot of self catering and just bought in for breakfast so can't comment on the food at the hotel.

Lots of things to see and do in the area with some unmissable excursions - Grossclockner High Alpine Road, Krimml Waterfalls, the Seefest (if you're there when it's on), various cablecars, to mention but a few. Sounds great doesn't it.

BUT... thank goodness it was not too hot when we were there because the noise at night from people going home from the bars/clubs really spoilt things. We like to sleep with windows open but this was just not an option and the first night there we hardly had any sleep. With the windows closed on other nights then most of the noise was thankfully blocked out, otherwise we would have moved on and just forfeited our money.

The staff were very friendly and helpful - the location was excellent, right in the centre of town and a few minutes walk from the lakeside.

This was a bit of problem though - as the rooms were quite stuffy and in June, it was difficult to sleep without an open window, but then there was noise all night from the local bars and clubs - which all had ouside space close by. So, all you could hear was shouting and revelling until about 5am every night, except maybe Sunday.

Although our experience may not be typical as Euro 2008 was taking place the next week in Austria...? But if you want somewhere quiet - avoid !! Hard to sleep most nights!

We were not too keen on the food either - breakfast was adequate - a cold buffet - but there was no variation and it got boring! Little choice for evening meals and the one night we stayed in, soup tasted soapy and food was of poor quality.

However - why would you stay in ? - when there are so many great restaurants within a short walk, serving local and international cuisine to suit everybody.

Zell am See is a great place to stay - stunning views of the mountains, beautiful lake and clear air - lots to do and visit ,with many trips available.

Great place - ordinary hotel - noisy location!
