Romantik Hotel Zell am See
Ranked #7 of 42 Hotels in Zell am See
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 5, 2011

The Romantik Hotel in Zell am See firstly has a prime location - we wanted to stay close to the lake and apart from the Grand Hotel, this is as close as you can get (and probably just as good as the Grand).
We are a couple aged 26 and 28 and wanted to get away for Christmas for a change and chose to stay here and ski in Zell am See for a week.
We flew with Thomson to Salzburg and then picked up a transfer bus to Zell am See - they do not let the big buses travel through the town, so a Crystal holidays rep then picked us up to take us directly to our hotel.
On first impressions, we were extremely pleased with our choice of hotel. It is both spatious and charming and traditionally Austrian in decor throughout.
The bedroom was very sweet - do not stay here if you are looking for a modern hotel with modern facilities though. The room was clean and pretty and we had chocolates on our bed as well as basket for the 'Wellness area' in the hotel including bath robes, slippers and towels which were replenished every day. The hotel has a cellar to store skiis and equipment so this made it very easy.
Everything was made easy during our stay and I do not know whether all the extra stops were pulled out because it was Christmas or whether the same level of service is applied throught the year (I am guessing this is true). We were very well looked after and the staff were incredibly polite and welcoming.
Breakfast was plentiful (we stayed half board) with a selection of cheeses, salad, breads, jams, yoghurt, meat, cereal, bacon and scrambled egg and boiled eggs as well as juice and tea/coffee.
We were also supplied with a morning newsletter to include items such as the weather and local activities and a menu for that evening (note - the hotel appreciate it if you let them know at breakfast if you will not be around for dinner). I am a vegetarian and ate very well the whole time - they always offered delicious alternatives (I was anxious about this before I arrived).

I feel that this hotel and staff really understand the needs of a skiier, suppling lots of food and drink (snacks are provided in the hotel lobby in the afternoon) and fantastic relaxation. If you visit the Wellness area (which we did every day), be sure to experience a 'Sauna infusion' with Tomas - the Wellness Manager. The saunas and steam are all 'nude' but I am a young female and preferred to sit in a towel - which is fine :)
We had a Eucalyptus sauna infusion which really brought us back to health from being in the cold all day! Tomas seems to love providing these infusions! My boyfriend enjoyed the heated outdoor pool although this was too cold for me! - I took pleasure in drinking the herbal teas on offer (free) and resting in the jacuzzi area. The hotel also has a log fire to sit by with a drink and a pool table.

If you are a couple (young or older) looking for a traditional, calm and romantic Christmas break I would thoroughly recommend this stunning hotel. It has four stars but desevres 5. Perfect in every way.
Over Christmas (we stayed 21 - 28 December) we were surprised with hand made biscuits brought up to our room and even a lunch pack to take home on the last day as we had an early flight.
The staff are by no means 'in your face', you really can please yourself, knowing that they are there if you need them for anything.

The only thing to note is that you pay for drinks seperatly, and we were met with a bill at the end of our stay but this was no problem as we budgeted for this.

I cannot reccomend this hotel enough - truely the best hotel I have stayed in. It offers the unique blend of feeling right at home (you can relax around the hotel) but also a very special service. I was afraid of feeling lonely on Christmas Day, away from family, but did not feel like this at all!

Do not miss the Austrian night at the hotel - traditional food and an accordian player!

Only downfall was that we had 10 courses for dinner on Christmas Eve (the day they celebrate the most) and this went on for four consecutive days!! I got quite tired after two hours at the dinner table and lots of courses - it is beautiful nouvelle cuisine but definitly not necessary four nights in a row!

We stayed over the Christmas period 21/12 - 28/12 - Staff very friendly - Hotel was very clean - our room was cleaned daily to a very high standard - food was excellent - apart from the buffet night when we went for dinner within the time allocated to find that when we arrived to our main course there was no food left - on a ski holiday you need food!! - we spoke to the waitress and the receptionist who both gave their apologies but I have to say neither of them offered us an alternative which would have been nice!! - make sure you get their early!! so yes we would recommend the hotel but watch out for the Buffet night - would we stay their again if we went to Zell, probally not

We took the train from Munich to Zell Am See and walked from the train station to the Romantik. It was easy to find the Hotel and just adorable on the outside. The family who runs the hotel were very friendly and attentive at check-in. Our room had a balcony with a wonderful view of the lake and Zell Am See.There were robes and slippers in the room to wear to the Relaxation/Wellness Area which was awesome!! There was a Dry Sauna, an infared Sauna, a steam room and small cold plunge pool all in a No clothing/bathing suits allowed area. Americans tend to not be so open to nudity and that's why I mention it but you can just wear your towel. Then there is a Hot tub, Pool inside and that you can swim to the outside and lot's of chaise lounges for reading/relaxing. There is also a room with lounge chairs and 2 big red waterbeds!! It's a great place to relax after a day on the slopes. The breakfast was very good with the typical European breakfast with sliced meats like salami etc and cheeses, wonderful breads, hard boiled eggs, fresh juices, cereals and yogurt....and it's all free! Our reservation included half-board which means dinner included and we ate in the restaurant 2 of the 3 nights. It was very good but we wanted to try something else one night. If you do decide not to eat dinner let them know in the morning so they won't prepare a meal for you and they also refund you the cost which was nice. The Lobby was very nice and inviting with a big fireplace, chairs and tables for reading or playing games and there is a bar to enjoy some drinks by the fire. This was my second time to Zell Am See and we skiied at Schmittenhoe and Kaprun. There is a free bus to Kaprun and it's fun to ski there because it's a glacier and the skiing is mostly above timberline. Going in December is amazing because of the lights in town and the Advent Market (Like a Christmas Market) with the outdoor stalls with people selling homemade toys, crafts, candles, drinks and food.

We got married and honeymooned in Zell am See in August 2010, and stayed for 11 nights at the Romantik Hotel. Sabine the hotel owner organised our wedding at the local town hall and we held our reception at the hotel. Thanks to Sabine and her very friendly, helpful and efficient staff our wedding day and total stay at the hotel was "just magical" and for this we will always be very greatful. We found the wellness area very relaxing and were pleasantly suprised to find the hotel offered a daily fitness and sight seeing programme which was free of charge, this was organised by a very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable staff member Thomas. The food was fantastic, a great variety. We met lots of lovely people from different parts of the world at the hotel and they all agreed this hotel was one of the best we had all stayed at. If you are thinking of getting married in this beautiful town I would suggest booking direct with the hotel and speak with Sabine, I can assure you, you will not be dissapointed.

It's not often I fail to find something wrong with a hotel but this has got to be a first. From the moment we arrived and the receptionist greeted us we knew we were going to enjoy our 10 day stay, and enjoy it we certainly did. Close to the town and the lake but shielded from the noise of the trains.
The food was exceptional, dinner was always 4 or more courses and a selection of meals to choose from, breakfast was exactly what you would expect, good selection and plenty of it. Those of us staying half board could make up a small packed lunch also. The staff were fantastic, always smiling and genuinely enjoyed their work. Twice we whilst we were walking in town staff waved and said hello.
Overall, regardless of why you want to visit Zell you will not be dissappointed by this hotel.

My wife and 13 year old daughter have just returned from a week at this hotel. We have travelled a lot in the US and in Europe and this was one of the very best breaks we have had. The hotel is super, not flash but very welcoming, very well run by a warm and professional family and offers very good spa facilities. The evening meals and breakfasts are excellent and we thought the drinks were not badly priced. The room we had was fine, clean and large if a little old fashioned. The rest of the hotel is a joy and offers bike loan (which we used and had a great time riding around the lake) and the staff are full of advice and tips. Other guests seemed to be a mix of Germans, Austrians, Italians and British with non-British in the slight majority. Most were older couples or groups but there were other older children and some youngsters. It was a very good mix and everyone was clearly having a good time.

The location is very central and we liked the town which is full of places to eat and drink and a variety of shops. There are more shops (non tourist) in the town of Zell am Zee Sud (Schutdorff ?) about 30-40 mins slowish walk away.

We loved Zell and the area. There is just so much to do and we certainly didn't do all of it. We used the Zell and Kaprun card that comes with a holiday at this hotel and gives you free access to cable cars, lake crossings and cruises, entrance to the Lidos and bus trips. We went up mountains, swam in the lake, rode around the lake and crossed it etc, took a train trip to Salzburg (1 hr 30 mins) and about 28 Euro return on clean and efficient trains.

Overall we thought the hotel was great, the resort lovely and Austria a fantastic addition to the list of places we have been to and to which we will return.

My husband and I stayed here in June 2010 and thought it was probably the best hotel we have ever stayed in. It was the service and individual nature of the hotel that made it so special, more than the quality of the rooms although it had good facilities. I was impressed from the moment we checked in when the receptionist introduced herself by name and shook our hands.

The experience of the hotel is rather different from that portrayed on the website. Perhaps this is the branding that the Romantik chain imposes. In reality, the hotel is a family-run hotel, that attracts slightly older couples – although we are in our late 20s/early 30s and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

We thought the food was excellent. Not huge portions, but you don’t need it when you are having 5 courses! It was great to try Austrian specialities such as beef with apple horseradish, delicious soups, strudel, dumplings. Everything was very well presented. Breakfast had a good spread of breads, meat, a hot option, fruit, cereals etc.

The pool and surrounding garden were lovely, with the added benefit of indoor and outdoor sections to suit the weather. We did not try the spa treatments or other activities offered as we preferred to do our own thing. It is a very quiet hotel (except for the traditional music at the Salzburger evening, which was delightful). The only minor problems we encountered were that the safe in our room did not work (they offered us use of one at reception), the TV reception was not brilliant and the double bed was two singles. Although, as I said, the hotel’s appeal is its service and individuality rather than facilities.

The Zell Am See card offered fantastic value for using the cable cars and local buses (we found the information centre very helpful for bus timetables and maps although you had to ask as not all leaflets were on display). The only money we spent on days out in our 7-night stay was the bus to the Krimml Waterfalls (well worth climbing to the top to see the Alpine valley through which the river flows) and hire of a boat on the lake.

The staff at Romantik Hotel constantly did more than was necessary to please their guests – such as a red rose (presumably from the hotel’s rose garden) for the ladies on the romantic dinner evening, free cycle hire, and chocolates and cards left in the room on various days by the cleaning lady. As we were leaving, the owner gave us a lift to the train station in his car; even though he spoke little English, we could tell he and his wife were proud of the family business and rightly so.
