“Cosy hotel, good location, friendly staff”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2010

Just returned from Christmas at the Alpenland Sporthotel. The hotel is very cosy and the rooms have a cabin sort of feel, which seems appropriate in the setting and is nice to return to following a day of skiing. All the hotel staff are very friendly. You can rent your skis from Intersport directly at the hotel, and there is a really convenient shuttle bus from the hotel to the gondola in Alpendorf.

If you are going over Christmas, the hotel puts on a special 'do' and the food was superb given the numbers that were catered for.

Lots of nice little restaurants and shops in the town, and the hotel is very central.

The only downsides for me were that the hotel was exceptionally hot. It seemed to be overcompensating for the snow outside. However, this is subjective to my tastes. Also, the parking garage is around 35 euros for the week, which is a little steep. On the other hand, it is nice to have the car not completely frozen for a week and still be able to use your washer fluid when you leave...!

Would definitely return.

We stayed at Alpenland Sporthotel for a week through timeshare exchange. Our room, or rather apartment, was big enough for three of us. The room was nice, clean and comfortable, however, because of the furniture it might have been oppressive, had it been a hot summer week. The staff was helpful and friendly.

The hotel has a swimming pool, sauna, an exercise room, tennis courts, some restaurants and laundry facilities. A shopping centre is right behind the hotel.

This part of Austria has a lot to offer in the summer and Saint Johann im Pongau is a great location if you have a car. It is close to the main highway. You can make tours to castles, picturesque churches, waterfalls and nearby ice caves. Salzburg, Munich, Vienna, and even Milan are all accessible by car. The area is well worth a visit, we will definitly go back in the future.

Just returned from our first trip to Austria, staying at the Sporthotel through timeshare exchange. Along the lines of previous reviews, rooms were dated back to the 80's with curtains/duvet/furniture. Interval rates the hotel as a gold exchange but compared with resorts we usually stay it is more in line with a silver.

The best parts of the resort are the town/activities nearby. We did tours to Salzburg, Eagle's Nest, Ice Caves, and several hikes through the mountains right out the back door of the hotel. There is so much to do in the area that a single week will feel rushed. We walked to the hotel from the train station 10-15 minutes depending on your pace, and used the trains to get places all week.

Even with the outdated decor and overrating it has received, we agreed that we would stay in this hotel again because of the area and activities it offers. Would love to go back during ski season but tough to get a room. Many ski hills within minutes of the resort, make for good hiking in the summer, great skiing in the winter.

We have stayed at this hotel several times now and keep going back for more ,as a family skiing destination it is very hard to beat. The food and facilities are more than adequate.Mark who sorts the equipment out in 10 minutes flat is awesome and very reasonable.Everything else is made so easy it is hard to change venues.

My husband and I traded our Los Cabos timeshare for a week here. It is not more than a 3 star hotel (by American standards), but we knew that going in. The first room we were shown was dreadful...just a basic hotel room that you may find at a Holiday Inn. We upgraded to a junior suite which was large with a king bed, sofa grouping, lots of storage . THe rooms were decorated in the '80's and are in need of an updating. The bathroom had plenty of room for 2 sinks, but instead had alot of wasted counter space. The sink was cracked. There is no shower curtain or door...just a half wall that allowed water to splash to the floor. Make sure you ask for a room in the back. We had an end room 140 and it had a nice view of the hills, but the front rooms look at the shopping mall. The Italian restraruant was sub par. Go next door to Cavali's!! We ate there 3 nights in a row. ..lamb chops and creme brulee were to die for. The Lotus is also good...Chinese food in an Austria where the owners speak German...can't beat it! Worse part of htel was the attitude of the front desk staff. They acted with boredom and disinterest and were down right rude, at times. The housekeeping and waitstaff employees were great. Also, no washcloths (not uncommon in some European hotels) and no top sheet on the bed...just a very warm down comforter..way to warm for August!! No a/c, either.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for a week on our honeymoon.
It's cute, convenient, and comfortable. The staff was been nice and helpful.
There are a couple restaurants in the hotel that are good, and the neighborhood is bursting with great places to eat and wonderful shopping.
The hotel offers many things: there is a pool and other fitness facilities, we rented bikes through the hotel, and the hotel arranged a car rental for us.
Our room had a wonderful view, but was very no-frills. Comfy bed, TV with 1 English station, but no Air Conditioning!
I don't handle heat well, so was a little uncomfortable during the day, but at night the town cooled down a lot.
Overall, good experience.

Our week's stay at the hotel was excellent. Admittedly the weather was very, very hot and sunny which helps but everything was superb - air con might have been good but hey that kind of heat happens rarely in central Europe. We upgraded to a south facing, two bedroom, two bathroom apartment with small but adequate kitchenette and views over the roof tops to the river and mountains beyond. The rooms were serviced every day and the staff, at all levels, were very curteous and spoke excellent English. The car park below the hotel at €35 for the week was maybe a bit pricey but extremely convenient. The wifi wasn't the best and at €8 for 3 hours was a little annoying but we coped. The pool & gardens were wonderful in the heat.
St Johann was larger than we expected, more a town than an Alpine village but the surrounding area offered so much. Places that must be visited include Salzburg, the Ice Cave (be prepared for a long hard climb and many steps) Untersberg cable car, the Salt Mines, Liechtenstein Gorge, Gross Glockner Glacier, Zell am See and many others within a short drive. Also lovely mountain walks are possible from the hotel.
I highly recommend this area and the hotel.
