We have stayed at this family run hotel 5 or 6 times in the past 11 years. We always receive a warm welcome and fantastic service throughout our stay. The hotel constantly reinvest in their infrastructure. We will certainly be returning again.

When selecting where we would end up after a demanding hiking and Red Bull 400 race in Slovenian Kranjska Gora/Planica, Hotel Alpendorf turned out to be a brilliant decision! Cozy spa at the bottom, ‘master-chefed’ cuisine a level higher, more-or-even-more wooden-luxurious apartments another level higher, all topped with mountain summits easily reachable by funicular located right next to the hotel. I’m not much into food, but breakfast and 5-course dinner menu were far beyond delicate, it made me feel like I never wanted to leave.. Take my word for it!

Really nice and cosy familyrun hotel in fantastic surroundings, with a cablecar just 100m from the hotel.
We had booked a familyroom (2 adjoining rooms with a door inbetween) and they were spacious rooms with nice big balconys.
The hotel also had a nice wellnes area and an indoor pool with bubblebath (kids loves it).
The hotel served excellent food everyday (included in our 3/4 pension).
All staff from cleaners to owners were very friendly.
A bonus was the Salzburger Cards, which were also included in bookings for stays of 7+ days

Just returned from a nice family ski holiday. The hotel is quite good and we stayed in superior room, which is nicely (modern) decorated. Only 100 meters to the cable station which makes it perfectly positioned. Wellness is okay, although a bit too small (easily crowded) and the food is above average, but sometimes room for improvement. The dessert buffet was very nice!

Very friendly staff and good cleaning, so in all a good place to stay!

We stayed at Hotel Alpendorf for a short week during winter break after choosing the location and hotel sight-unseen. The hotel itself was wonderful, the staff was very friendly and the overall atmosphere was cozy. The rooms were nicely decorated, the beds were comfortable, and the hotel offers an a la carte pillow menu. The indoor pool area was very nice and featured some cool water jets that supplied both fun and ad hoc massages. The sauna area had a Finnish sauna, steam room and solarium, much welcomed after a long day on the slopes. We couldn’t have been more pleased with our choice.

The food was quiet good. We ordered the “half-board” package so we had the 5-course meal every evening which consisted of a salad buffet, appetizer, soup, main course and desert. For the main course we selected from three options - one meat, one fish, and one vegetarian - plus a couple of kid-friendly options. I confess that I generally prefer “comfort food” to "fancy," but we enjoyed wandering off the beaten path and bit and nearly everything we tried was quite tasty. To top it all off, on Sunday they served a mind-blowing desert buffet. I do wish the set menus had featured a bit more stereotypical Austrian fare (schnitzel, knoedel, kaesespatzle, gulasch, etc.) - maybe a fourth option in the future - but there was plenty of that to be had on the mountain. The daily breakfast buffet featured pastries, breads, eggs, breakfast meats, etc. We didn’t go hungry.

Evenings found us playing board games in the common area, which seemed to be where most of the guests congregated enjoying their beer, wine, coffee or “schiwasser” (Austrian koolaid for the kids). The other guests seemed to overwhelmingly be families which the hotel seems to cater to. There’s also a bar downstairs but we avoided it since bars in Austria allow indoor smoking.

(On the topic of smoking, Austria will drive you crazy if you’re a non-smoker - it has one of the highest rates of smoking in the world and is well behind most modern countries in terms of protecting non-smokers. We were able to avoid most of the smoke in the alms and on the mountain, but we had to work at it. The hotel itself isn’t too bad - other than in the bar people had to go outside to smoke - but there were times when the hallways or lounge were filled with the smell of tobacco and we had to escape to our room for clean air.)

Alpendorf itself is a small village 10 minutes up the hill from St Johann gathered around the two ski lifts serving the Alpendorf ski area. There are only a handful of hotels in the village which keeps the crowds down, even during school breaks. By getting out early, taking a late morning break and then skiing while everyone else was having lunch we pretty much had wide open slopes. An intermediate or advanced skier can easily ski over to the Wagrain or Flachau and enjoy those slopes as well, though we found them to be far more crowded. There’s decent off-piste skiing on the Flachau side.

Our typical day looked like this:
- Breakfast ~0730
- Chair lift at 0830 (gondola was pretty crowded until after 1100)
- Ski hard until ~1100 or 1130
- Take a break, have some yummy Austria comfort food and chill for an hour
- Ski hard while everyone else eats
- Wander back towards Alpendorf around 1500
- Fuel up with the afternoon snack service
- Swim/chill/sauna
- Dinner ~1845
- Games
- Sleep
- Repeat

Not a bad way to spend a week.

Tip 1: Tony the masseuse is an absolute wizard. Maybe the best sport massage I’ve every had. Book early.

Tip 2: If you sleep light or need/want quiet, ask for a room on a higher floor and on the side opposite the lounge and bar.
