The Schernthaner is more of a pension than a hotel in that it has no restaurant, but in every other way, it is a good hotel. From the moment we arrived the welcome was warm and genuine and the hotel is spotlessly clean, nicely decorated and very comfortable. Each landing (there is a lift) is interesting enough to make you want to sit there and the bedroom was comfortable with a balcony that was delightful to linger on, staring at the lake and mountains. Though not all rooms have a lake view, they all seem to have a balcony with flowers garlanding every windowsill.
Breakfast is hearty enough and the landlady - Anneliese - is always on hand to make sure you have everything you need. In the reception area, there is a whiteboard detailing daily events of interest to tourists, though - again - Anneliese will advise you of things to do. It is situated on the very edge of town, but the lake and tourist amenities are still only five minutes walk away.
The lack of a restaurant is not a problem as there are many restaurants in St Gilgen.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a lake view.

Have stayed at four hotels during my current trip and this was by far the best. It's all about service really. Other hotels might have an even better view (though the view of the Schafberg from our balcony was rather impressive) but the service is what counts.

On arrival we were given a warm and heartfelt welcome from the proprietor. She always seemed to be cheerful, and this made the whole place feel happy. Everything was clean and in.working order. The balcony was lovely. The breakfasts good. The advice we had on how to spend our days spot on too.

St Gilgen is a lovely village. We were very pleased we decided to stay here rather than in St Wolfgang, which is nice for a day visit but just that bit more crowded and touristy.

We did three day trips- a walk to St Wolfgang via Falkenstein, which was really lovely; the trip up to Schafberg on the steam train; and best of all, the cable car to Zwolferhorn and a walk all the way down from the top.

Thoroughly recommended!

This hotel enhances the town of St Gilgen and the Wolfgang See. A tradional decored hotel with the usual friendly atmosphere associated with the Austrians.

Plenty of local bars/bistros within easy walking distance. Whether you want to relax by the lake or be adventourous The Schernthaner offers the perfect start and finish to your day.

This hotel is one of those delightful and very rare finds these days. The hotel is located on the edge of town but very close to all amenities, cable car, bus station, restaurants and a very easy walk to the lake. The owner has every right to be very proud of her authentic and very comfortable establishment offering nothing but the very best hospitality. We will definitely not only recommend this hotel but will be back ourselves in the future.

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw were good but our room at the back looked directly at the mountains and beautiful views.

Stayed 1 night at this hotel in October 2011. In spite of quite low price (50 euro per night) I got an immaculate clean well-equipped room with a free WiFi, nice bathroom. This is a new family-runned hotel in an ancient building. The owner is a very nice helpful lady. I liked most the breakfast room - cosy, with a lot of local artefacts, very clean, wooden tables, nice tableware, incredibly good food, everything done with the best possible service.
