“Clean, cosy hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 10, 2012

Stayed 1 night at this hotel in October 2011. In spite of quite low price (50 euro per night) I got an immaculate clean well-equipped room with a free WiFi, nice bathroom. This is a new family-runned hotel in an ancient building. The owner is a very nice helpful lady. I liked most the breakfast room - cosy, with a lot of local artefacts, very clean, wooden tables, nice tableware, incredibly good food, everything done with the best possible service.

Hotel Schernthaner in St.Gilgen has already had such rave reviews, that I wouldn’t know what else to add. But I still insisted to myself, so here goes. Its’ strategically located- a hundred meters from the St. Gilgen main bus station, the cable car station and close to restaurants. The SPAR supermarket is about half a kilometer from the hotel which you could easily reach by a short walk or by using the free bikes which felt so convenient. As a couple with a 10 year child visiting in late August 2011, we had a spotlessly clean large room on the second floor with a nice view from the balcony overlooking the street. There’s an elevator which helped us with our baggage on the way up. The room had a dining table with chairs and just outside, opposite our door, was a common kitchenette with everything you wanted- refrigerator, microwave, cutlery, etc. The beds and mattresses were spacious and very comfortable. On the first night, it was extremely warm and our hostess, Anne, obliged immediately with a table fan. The dining room was well decorated and the breakfast was nice but not extraordinary. Anne oozed with warmth and hospitality. She went out of her way to help us with information on events in and around St. Gilgen. All our doubts regarding necessity of car hire vanished due to the excellent public transport of which we made full use. We stayed almost a week and covered most areas in and around St. Gilgen. We’ve stayed in many family inns and hotels in Europe and rate Schernthaner in the top 5%. Some facts and figures: 1 week bus pass on the bus route Salzburg – Bad Ischl costs €33.6 per person with unlimited use. The pass can be purchased from the driver on your first trip.
Day 1 – we travelled from Munich to Salzburg and then on to St. Gilgen by bus. Rest of the day in St. Gilgen. Day 2 (Hallstatt) – we travelled by bus to Bad Ischl. The Bad Ischl – Hallstatt – Bad Ischl train ticket cost for 2 adults + 1 child 16.2€. The Hallstatt ferry for a return journey cost us 12.8€. The family pass to the salt mines in Hallstatt cost us 50€. The painted skulls museum cost us 3.5€. Day 3 (Salzburg) – we took the bus to Salzburg and spent the day there. The bus Salzburg – Hellbrun – Salzburg ticket cost us 10.6€. The Schloss Hellbrun tickets cost us 23.5€. Day 4 (St. Wolfgang) – we took the bus to Strobl and then hiked to St. Wolfgang. The Schafbergbahn tickets cost us 65.5€. We returned to St. Gilgen by the last cruise boat which cost us all 16.5€. Day 5 (Dachstein Ice caves) - we took the bus to Bad Ischl. The train journey Bad Ischl – Obertraun – Bad Ischl cost us 22.5€. The bus from Obertraun to Dachstein return journey cost us 9€. The tickets to Dachstein Ice caves were for 75€. Day 6 (St. Gilgen and nearby) – we hiked and biked a lot on this day and used the bus for our rides to nearby towns. We went to do the Sommerdelbahn (tobogganing) which cost us 30€ for 2 trips for each of us. Day 7 – we checked out and took the bus to Salzburg, then left by train to Zell Am See.

Stayed for one night wat a pity... Loved the owner, she has placed great thoughts into decorating the whole place makes it really homely for the guest. And I love how she place the eggs in the "hen " in the breakfast area. There is wifi in the room!! And the location is near to the bus station and the the central Christmas market. Best of all We pay less than 100 euro cldnt believe it :)

St. Gilgen is a lovely little alps town. Not far from Salzburg and Halstatt. Great day trips and also fun to just wander around the town. A nice couple of days respite from Vienna. The hotel is family run and so very friendly. Lovely rooms and a very good breakfast.

I will keep this quite short.
The owner lives there and that is always a good start (absentee owners do not have the same standards I find).
Anneliese was great and her English is good. We "dash" around a lot on holidays and did not see much of her and this led her to check that all was OK / which it was!
Room was lovely, clean etc etc
WiFi was available free but with a small charge if you wanted it in your room.
Breakfast was the only minor criticism. All nationalities have their definition of a good breakfast and although English ours is not eggs, bacon etc etc; though I do like that occasionally.
But previously in austria we had stayed in salzburg at a hotel that provide lots more choice to suit all national tastes; This was an OK breakfast but at about £90 per night maybe English visitors would expect more. I would have liked to have paid less per room and just had a snack later on in the morning or to have had a more fuller breakfast at Anneliese's. I would suggest better quality cereals with more choice and the chance for half fat milk; more choice for toasted bread; maybe more fruit available; maybe a muffin cake slice or a small sweet snack to go with the coffee.
I say all of this Anneliese as I would want your ratings to be as high as you would want them and a few small changes will ensure that.
Overall we loved our stay with you and now rate St Gilgen very highly on our list of destinations to return to.

Room Tip: maybe ask the owner in advnce for a higher room to get better views

Loved the town, very charming place. The hotel was ok, the owner was a lovely women, very nice. The only thing I did not like was the breakfast offered, it was horrible. One of the worst I've ever had. Very limited selection, tepid hard boiled eggs instead of warm soft boiled. A real let down.

This is our third stay at the lovely Hotel Schernthaner in St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee. The owner, Frau Eisl, is one of the sweetest people I've ever met. She is always smiling, always willing to take time to help with whatever you might need. Her rooms are clean with updated bathrooms. And there is wifi in the rooms for a small daily fee or you can use the hotel's computer and printer near Reception. There is also a small private parking lot for guests. Everything in St. Gilgen is within a few minutes walk.

I can't imagine staying anywhere else. It truly is like coming home to family every time we visit.
