Hotel Sonnalp
Reviewed April 8, 2013

The hotel was recommended to us by friends and we truly had the best experience. The hotel seems to be under new management and all the staff as well as the owner (whom we had the pleasure to meet) went out of their way to make our stay amazing. Breakfast and dinner were included. We got to taste real Austrian specialty food along with a big variety of dishes, sometimes from a huge buffet, other times from a 5 course menu with choices. The Sauna/ swimming pool area was very relaxing and had a variety of Saunas.
The hotel is on a little hill overlooking the town of Hinterglemm and is conveniently close to shops and the skilifts.
All in all we had a wonderful experience and can't wait to be back!

The Sonnalp hotel really is a good find, the food and staff were excellent. Having read the reviews about the steep hill, we were a bit worried about the location. But whilst the hill was steep it's very short and the views from the bedrooms more than make up for a few moments out of breath after climbing the hill. Don't let the hill put you of, it's not that bad, The food was very good and the staff couldn't do enough for us. The waiters in the lobby bar were particulary amusing and attentive. Would recommned the hotel for couples or an adult group, not so sure there were too many kids facilities. The swimming pool was lovely and most relaxing, helped by fluffy White derssing gowns found in our room that you could use around the pool area. We didn't try the sauna as this was a 'no textile area!'

Room Tip: Our room was at the back of the hotel and whilst the views were not as good, it was very peaceful. T...

A great hotel, superb location with views across towards the Zwolferkogelbahn gondola (where we used a locker each day to store our skiis & then either catch the ski bus or the gondola) - also great location for the night skiing. The food was excellent and plentiful at both breakfast and dinner, with a choice of 3 main courses, except 2 buffet evenings. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The spa area & pool are top class, as is the lounge, with large comfy sofas arranged in cosy groups. I would agree with some other reviews, that some refurbishment is required in the bathrooms, but the facilities all work, are spotlessly clean & tidied each day.

When we booked this we were a little wary about what to expect given that other reviews weren't so good. We really didn't have anything to worry about however as the hotel was excellent all round. We upgraded to a superior room which was spacious and warm. Our children had a standard room which was still very nice just a little smaller and with a balcony without a view. The restaurant was lovely and the variation in the menu was good. We really liked the buffet gala dinner where the choice and quality was exceptional. The hotel bar was cosy and every day at 5 ish served the nicest homemade soup, just whats needed after a day skiing. On the downside, the steep walk from the hotel isn't ideal but is manageable as the bus stop is quite close. For what we saved in money terms staying a little out of the main town we gained in quality and service. Only one small complaint about this hotel .... our room was on the first floor, at the top of the stairs .... the reception has swinging door which you can hear at all hours every time someone goes in or out of the reception desk. It took us a few days to work out what this annoying noise was and it drove me mad! Note to the hotel.....you must sort this out!! Apart from that a lovely, friendly, clean place to stay. Oh and the spa is excellent too! Thank Sonnalp, we will definately consider you again!

Room Tip: Do not go for anything above reception and upgrade to superior with a view. Worth the extra pennies...

For the next winter we are planning to offer a shuttle-service for our guests to the ski lift to make the stay for our guests more confortable.

We installed sound absorbers after we have read your review. We did not know that the sound of the reception door was so annoying. We want to apologize for that.

We are really looking forward to welcome your family in our hotel and want to thank you again for your review.

We had a lovely stay in the Sonnalp. The wellness area was brilliant, and the breakfast and dinner very good. The only slight negative was the fact that parts of the hotel are in need of a facelift. Our room was always spotless but badly needed a refurb, especially the bathroom. The dining room was also very outdated. However the bar/lounge area was very nice to relax in.

We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay in our hotel and that you and your friends had a nice stay in our hotel. We want to say Thank You to you that you took the time to write your impressions on Tripadvisor.
It’s not allowed to smoke in our lounge bar opposite of the restaurant. Our Piccadilly Pub downstairs is the only places in the hotel where it’s allowed to smoke inside. Sorry that you did not feel comfortable about the smoke. We try to make all our guests happy and so we decided to allow the people to smoke in the Pub, especially because we also offer cigars.

Thank you for mention that you like the new style of the rooms. Our owners have chosen the interior and the new furniture and decoration on their own and they are happy to hear that you like the style.

We are looking forward to welcome you and your friends again in the Sonnalp,

We have spent really nice holidays in Hotel Sonnalp. The hotel offers a really uncomparable, family friendly atmosphere, the food was excellent, the view from the hotel just amazing (you see the slope directly from the restaurant and from the bar...just amazing, we will for sure come again. Thanks a lot Michaela & Chris
