“What a great find!”
Reviewed March 18, 2013

When we booked this we were a little wary about what to expect given that other reviews weren't so good. We really didn't have anything to worry about however as the hotel was excellent all round. We upgraded to a superior room which was spacious and warm. Our children had a standard room which was still very nice just a little smaller and with a balcony without a view. The restaurant was lovely and the variation in the menu was good. We really liked the buffet gala dinner where the choice and quality was exceptional. The hotel bar was cosy and every day at 5 ish served the nicest homemade soup, just whats needed after a day skiing. On the downside, the steep walk from the hotel isn't ideal but is manageable as the bus stop is quite close. For what we saved in money terms staying a little out of the main town we gained in quality and service. Only one small complaint about this hotel .... our room was on the first floor, at the top of the stairs .... the reception has swinging door which you can hear at all hours every time someone goes in or out of the reception desk. It took us a few days to work out what this annoying noise was and it drove me mad! Note to the hotel.....you must sort this out!! Apart from that a lovely, friendly, clean place to stay. Oh and the spa is excellent too! Thank Sonnalp, we will definately consider you again!

Room Tip: Do not go for anything above reception and upgrade to superior with a view. Worth the extra pennies...

Thank you very much that you took your time to write a review about our hotel. We were very happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay in our hotel. We will that the kitchen team that you liked the food very much.

For the next winter we are planning to offer a shuttle-service for our guests to the ski lift to make the stay for our guests more confortable.

We installed sound absorbers after we have read your review. We did not know that the sound of the reception door was so annoying. We want to apologize for that.

We are really looking forward to welcome your family in our hotel and want to thank you again for your review.

We had a lovely stay in the Sonnalp. The wellness area was brilliant, and the breakfast and dinner very good. The only slight negative was the fact that parts of the hotel are in need of a facelift. Our room was always spotless but badly needed a refurb, especially the bathroom. The dining room was also very outdated. However the bar/lounge area was very nice to relax in.

We want to thank you for your comment about our hotel. It’s good to hear that you enjoyed your winter holiday in our hotel.

We are sorry that you did not like your room very much. The renovation started in November when we began to run the hotel. This spring we continued to renovate the hotel. There had been many changes in the meantime and we would be very happy if we can welcome you again in our hotel.

Good rooms, nice sauna, great massage and very nice lounge. Besides that nice people and good food what can you ask more for?
I is located 5 min walk from the piste somewhat further from the city.
We had the 4 person room with friends that looks recently refurbished with good tasted.
Only negative is that in the bar down stars people smoke.

We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay in our hotel and that you and your friends had a nice stay in our hotel. We want to say Thank You to you that you took the time to write your impressions on Tripadvisor.
It’s not allowed to smoke in our lounge bar opposite of the restaurant. Our Piccadilly Pub downstairs is the only places in the hotel where it’s allowed to smoke inside. Sorry that you did not feel comfortable about the smoke. We try to make all our guests happy and so we decided to allow the people to smoke in the Pub, especially because we also offer cigars.

Thank you for mention that you like the new style of the rooms. Our owners have chosen the interior and the new furniture and decoration on their own and they are happy to hear that you like the style.

We are looking forward to welcome you and your friends again in the Sonnalp,

We have spent really nice holidays in Hotel Sonnalp. The hotel offers a really uncomparable, family friendly atmosphere, the food was excellent, the view from the hotel just amazing (you see the slope directly from the restaurant and from the bar...just amazing, we will for sure come again. Thanks a lot Michaela & Chris

Travelled as a group of 8. From the moment we walked in we were made very welcome by the staff. Nice decor, ample facilities and a lovely bar. Stayed on half board basis & food was great and you could eat as much you want.....if you got to dinner before our friend Billy! Location - near to the slopes with only as small hill to walk up/down each day, nothing too taxing. Have been on many ski trips to various resorts but would definitely stay here again. Hinterglem has some great bars (après) Highly recommended.

The hotel is situated out of Hinterglemm center up a hill which will takes approximately 10 minutes to walk to the Zwölferkogelbahn gondola station and around 15 minutes walk into Hinterglemm centre. This walk does put you off going out at night as tackling the hill back to to the hotel when you've had a few sherberts is no fun. If you get a taxi it costs approximately 12 euros from the centre (opposite London Pub) and the taxi has to take the long way around the centre due to the pedestrian access only bollards at night.

The hotel facilities are good with a nice swimming pool, sauna, steam room, chill out relaxation area and clean changing facilities. There are plenty of towels provided at the swimming pool so you do not need to take your own and there are dressing gowns and slippers also provided in your hotel room to allow you to walk to the swimming pool/leisure facilities which are on the 2nd floor of the hotel. The swimming pool has a nice few of the flood lit ski slope...... You may want to take your own water supply to drink at the leisure area however as the small water fountain/machine is often room temperature and quite often they ran out of cups. There is also a sunbed available for use. My friend indulged in a body massage which he recommended. The 30 minutes full body massage was 35 euros so not cheap by English prices. If you read the morning menu at breakfast there were often discounts available on the day.

The hotel room was basic but clean, you get a TV with CNN news in English. I was in an attic room which meant there was a sloping rook in the bathroom I hit my head on a couple of times and you could not stand in the bath to take a shower. The radiators were also only luke warm and meant that my ski clothes were often damp the next day,

The breakfast was plentiful with buffet style, scrambled eggs, sausage and bacon, salmon, breads, cereal, fresh fruit, selection of teas, nice coffee and juices. The evening meal was ok, the desserts were usually some sort of moose and were tasteless. The main course was often quite bland. But the soups were usually nice and there is a salad buffet each night so you don't go hungry. In the afternoon there is a soup offered in the bar was is nice and warming after the ski day.......In the restaurant we had to ask for the lights to be turned up more than once as it was so dimly lit that you could not see the food on the buffet table, The majority of staff were friendly though but the main receptionist could be a bit grumpy.

I would recommend that you hire a ski locker at the Zwölferkogelbahn gondola which means you can walk from the hotel in your trainers/walking boots and but on your ski boots when you get to the Zwölferkogelbahn gondola. Be warned though that the ski lockers close at 16:45pm so if you are late you may have to walk back in your ski boots.......

Overall the hotel was comfortable and the food not bad, the decor is traditional and clean. The location is one of my main issues and I have been spoilt in the past by staying at the much superior Alpine Palace hotel which is in the centre of the resort. I have also stayed in much cheaper pensions (bed and breakfasts) which I would prefer against the Sonnalp on location alone.....

So in summary........comfortable hotel, bland food, nice leisure facilities, slightly grumpy looking receptionist, friendly staff otherwise but location is too far out of centre and I got bored of the hill climb to get there......I would not rush to go back if i can get a hotel nearer the centre as location, location, location is key!

Room Tip: if you are tall and want a shower, try not to get a room on the third floor as you may have a slopin...

Thank you very much that you took your time to write your opinion about the hotel Sonnalp.
We are very sorry that you did not like your room because it was situated under the roof. The English tour operators sell different categories of rooms. They offer the category economy room, this is a cheaper category because the room has a steep roof and is a little bit smaller. We received a booking for this category for you and your colleague. We want to apologize that the travel agency may not inform you correctly about the offered room categories.
We are also very sorry that not all of the meals have been your taste.
We plan to offer a shuttle service to the ski slopes next winter that our guests feel even more comfortable. There are also positive aspects that we are not located in the center of Hinterglemm (p.ex. noise disturbance at night and during Aprés Ski,…).

Thank you again about writing a review and have a good time,

your HotelSonnalp team

We booked this hotel in June 2012 for our holiday now in January 2013. Since booking this, the hotel has been renovated - a lot! Everything has exceeded my expectations. The staff are fantastic, the food fantastic, the rooms are spacious and modern (the bathrooms are to be renovated this year). I would recommend a room with a balcony as it seems you get a bath too! The pool and sauna, steam room etc are wonderful and very relaxing at the end of hard day's skiing. Some reviews have complained about the steep walk back to the hotel - it's not more than 100 yards of steepness - easily manageable. The hotel is literally 5 minutes walk from a main lift which connects you into the whole area and the town centre is only a couple of minutes further on. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who wants luxury, excellent service and relaxation. Everything is perfect!
