OK, so we decided to go back to Saalbach with some friends having sold this wonderful ski area to them. Firstly, the skiing was just as good as we found last year when we went, just wanted to say that. We decided to stay in one of the best hotels in town and the 4 star Saalbacher Hof has a great location right in the centre, no more than a hundred metres or so from any one of three ski lifts. It was quite expensive at 145 Euros per person per night (290 Euros per room then), but we knew that before we went and we had booked superior rooms. On arriving ~(very late - after midnight) we were checked in and shown to our rooms, one on the 6th floor and the other (ours) on the 2nd in the old part of the hotel. They were ok, but nothing spectacular (our bathroom was really dated though and stank of smoke, which we realised the next day was due to the used hotel robe they had just left there from the previous guest). When we got up the following day though, we were disappointed to realise that our room had no view apart from a retaining wall with another hotel on top of it! As we were there for only a few days, we let it go. Our friends did have a better view however from their room which was in the new wing. At breakfast we were shown to a table in what seemed to us like a scruffy third class part of the dining room. Our wives immediately complained and at dinner that night we were given a different and much better table in a much better part of the hotel dining room. The contrast was startling and I am sorry to say it but we could not help but notice that every one around us in the original table had been predominantly English speaking, whereas in the better part, they were all Russian speaking. At breakfast the following day, our table had been used by others before we got there and despite our pulling them up about it, they did not do anything other than lay new place settings, so the cloth remained unchanged and dirty - just sloppy and inattentive. The food, at breakfast was nice and well cooked, at dinner the salad buffet was really nice (quite the best we have seen), the meals were very well prepared and presented, not all to our taste but hey ho. In the bar we thought the drinks (which were really expensive btw) were either watered down or given as short measure - how can one not taste malibu and flat coke (when we specifically asked for a small newly opened bottle) and not taste the malibu? After that we drank elsewhere. The new parts of the hotel are very nice but it hasn't been that well integrated with the old part. There are several lifts, all going to different places. The spa and pool areas, whilst very nice are at the top of the new part and felt really quite remote from our room. Also, when paying the kind of price we were, I don't exect to then be charged for internet usage, but unless one goes to the library on the fourth floor, one is. The boot and ski room is really very good, large, heated, with its own separate access, but watch out if you ski for the day after check out, your room card does not work and getting into the boot room can be a bit of a trial. On the whole we had a good break. We felt that the hotel, whilst nice could have been a lot better for the cost of it. We did notice that the staff were very attentive to others but they were sloppy and inattentive to us to the extent that we would not stay there again.
