I have just spent a week here in Saalbach at the Kristiana, it is just 5 minutes walk (in ski-boots) from the two main lifts and the main street.

The staff could not have been more helpful and welcoming, the made our holiday a special experience.

The food exceeded our expectations and was of an excellent standard, if you do not want bottled water then ask for tap water for free.

The cat is lovely, she sits on your knee and purrs like mad. Sadly I saw a drunk person roughly pet her and she responded by biting them (not hard enough), I feel that this was in self-defence and that the cat is a good judge of character. To my mind people who rough up cats deserve to get scratched.

As for the smoking issue, well if you don't like smoking don't come to Austria. The place is a bit behind the times on this one but as an ex-smoker I did not find it a problem to avoid this by choice of seating / bars. I think the problem is that they just want to make people happy, the general feeling was that at some point a ban will come in.

The lift system is amazing, and there are slopes to suit all abilities. The snow quality was poor due to the unusually warm weather all over the Alps, hey-ho.

What was really nice was how the Brits all got on well together. There was no large group annoying everybody else apart from some Belgians who seemed to having a good time.
I have had ski holidays ruined in the past by stag parties /hen dos and their ilk, kicking off and arrogantly thinking that the world revolves around themselves, never minding that they ruin everybody elses holiday by their behaviour. I wish this sort of group would hide themselves in a chalet so that we and the hotel staff don't have to suffer.

To accept hospitality, then petulantly connive to en-mass lower tripadvisor ratings seem to me un-British and a low and unfair type of behaviour that I was shocked to see having had such a brilliant holiday. I for one shall return to the Kristiana and sincerely hope that the reviewers below do not.

That was heart-balm after the en-mass lower tripadvisor ratings, which makes one feel helpless and sad. We really have been shocked that guests, who enjoyed our hospitality and the comfort of our house for one week, lable us as „arrogant“, „rude“ and „feckless“. Each one of us, the family and the stuff, works hard and gives one’s best to make sure that the stay in our house is as comfortable as possible for the guests.

It was a great pleasure for us to welcome you at our hotel and we highly appreciate your comments. We are more then delighted that you honour our efforts and we are very happy that we could make your stay with us as memorable and enjoyable as possible.

I'm not sure my review needs too many words - the pictures of our room in this 'art hotel' should say it all. I'm not sure what the German word for the crack-den chic of our lovely double room is but I'm pretty sure it's not 'kunst'. We decided to be un-British and complain about the chasm in comfort and decor between the images on the Crystal website and the reality of our accommodation and being kept awake until 1.30am by the noise from a staff party downstairs. The response from the manager was dismissive and unapologetic, signed off with a laugh as she picked up the phone mid-conversation.

We found service to be generally poor, the breakfast buffet to be poorly stocked and drinks in the bar to be overpriced. We were also delighted to find a bill at the end of our stay for the water on the table at dinner each night, especially as the Champagne breakfast promised on the first morning failed to materialise and the whole place smelled of cigarette smoke.

Saalbach's a great resort - just do yourself a favour and give this place a miss.

First impressions of the hotel were good, nice bedroom, friendly staff, good food.
The hotels welcome pack states that smoking is not allowed in the bar until 10.30 pm.
On many occasions staff were seen in the bar all through the day. When the owner was asked about this he responded that it was his decision whether smoking is permitted ie I can do as I want and the Customer has no say.
On checking the bill at the end of our stay we found that we had been charged for water which was supplied at the dinner table. There was nothing to say that water would be charged for and to whose room number would be charged (we had several friends in different rooms sitting at the dining table)
Will not be staying at this hotel again.

Regarding the smoking in the bar, we would like to inform you that since the 10th of July 2010 an indoor-smoking bill in Austria exists, which we naturally obey. Therefore, the assertion that we arbitrarily make decisions is simply fictitious.

With this policy, we intend to inform our dear guests about our comprehensive offerings and the corresponding prices. Clean hotel with good food, but Tequila the cat bit me three times and left hairs on all the furniture! There was nowhere to relax without the staff and others smoking despite the brochure stating there was no smoking indoors until 10.30pm. When questioned about this, the owner informed us that it was his hotel and he made the rules - no apology. Also, water was placed on the table every night but at the end of our stay, we found out it was chargable - again, the owner became quite rude and arrogant when we queried this. Seems that his priority is making a quick buck, never mind customer relations, and smoking and dancing with his well-refreshed rowdy bar guests! Wifi variable. Would never stay here again - agree with the other comments made; our large group will go elsewhere next year.

Dear Thrish c,

We really appreciate that you spent your holiday in our hotel and we are glad that you described our hotel as clean and that you were obviously satisfied with the kitchen. Naturally, we directly relayed this praise to our staff. As mentioned in the comment to the rating above, we from the hotel Kristiana obey the indoor- smoking bill which was approved by the Austrian government on the 10th of July 2010. Therefore the criticism is unjustified and after 10.30 the bar is declared as a smoking area.
Regarding our cat “Tequila” we would like to mention that she is a benign hand raising of the daughter of the hotel Kathrin and she is emotionally related to the animal. If the cat bites she feels threatened or simply does not want to be touched. We from the hotel Kristiana respect if a guest does not like pets or shows allergic reactions to cat hair. Then we do not hesitate to put the cat to the house of the owners where she can live during the stay of that guest. During your whole holiday you never alluded that you felt disturbed by the cat, neither to the staff nor to the owner.

Hotel is well situated for skiing. The staff welcoming, food excellent, the hotel very clean apart from the overwhelming smell of smoke. This surprised us, as we understood this to be a non-smoking hotel (one of the reasons we opted to stay here). It states in the hotel brochure in the rooms that the hotel management allow smoking in the bar area after 10.30pm. Bit of a contradiction!!
The evening meal is 5 course, well presented and waitress/waiter service. But be aware - the hotel supply water on the table but only tell you that it's charged for when you pay your final bill, the owner says that it's common practise in Austria. We asked around and found that other hotels don't charge.
When challenged about the hotel smoking policy the owner stated that it was his choice as to when he allowed smoking, so it's not a non-smoking establishment after all. There is nowhere to sit and chill out apart from the bar, the chef smokes in the bar during the day, and the staff smoke in their rooms even though guests are not allowed!!
All in all, we wouldn't stay here again. All our clothes smell of smoke, and we don't like being ripped off.

We really appreciate that you spent your holiday in our hotel . We are glad that you described our hotel as clean, the staff as friendly and that you were obviously satisfied with the kitchen and the central position.

We from the hotel Kristiana can hardly understand the reproach that an overwhelming smell of smoke was in the hotel. All the corridors to the rooms are marked with certified non- smoking signs and fire doors which automatically close in case of smoke development or can even be closed manually in case of disturbing smell of smoke. Therefore we can preclude that the smoke from the bar spreads through the whole hotel. Regarding the smoking in the bar, we would like to inform you that since the 10th of July 2010 an indoor-smoking bill in Austria exists, which we naturally obey. Therefore, the assertion that we arbitrarily make decisions is simply fictitious. Please take notice that the Austrian indoor smoking bill needs to be distinguished from the British indoor smoking bill. It is mentioned nowhere, neither on our homepage nor in the brochure of the tour operator, that the hotel is a complete non-smoking facility. The allegation that the bar is a smoking area after 10:30 pm is correct. Our staff is required by the management to inform the guest about this issue. However, it does not fit our understanding of hospitality to reprove our guests in every single case of eventual violations of the house rules. After the consultation of Karolina (receptionist) we offered you to stay in the restaurant even after the dinner. In the restaurant as well as in the hotel lobby exists a strict smoking ban that is naturally obeyed. The hotel owner served you and your friends every evening and asked each evening if everything was alright. You have never offered any complaints. You could have had the chance to discuss any occurring problem with us, but you never made use of it.

We would never stay at the Kunst-hotel Kristiana ever again. Sharp practise by the owner charging for table water and not telling customers until the end of the week. Smoking in the bar when he decided it was ok, despite advertising no smoking until after 10.30pm and no smoking in the rooms unless your staff!
Positives hotel very clean apart from smell of stale smoke. Food excellent and staff very friendly.

We have just returned from a weeks skiing in Saalbach and stayed at the Kristania as we have done for a number of years. It did not dissapoint, we love it and it is the perfect base for us in relation to the rest of the town and the ski lifts. Johann Breitfuss and his staff are superb hosts, the sevice they provide is first class and you can tell customer service is important to them. Our room (211) was situated on the front with a view of the Bernkogel cable car. Throughout the entirety of our stay our room was very clean, comfortable and warm. Even little things like the shower were clean (no mildew) which made a big difference after a day on the slopes.

All communal areas were spotlessly clean even the boot cellar.

The dinning room is clean, bright and airy and the hotel offers a comprehensive breakfast buffet. Dinner was usually a choice of 3 dishes including a vegetarian option and on some nights there was a buffet. Johann is justifyably proud of his wine cellar where he keeps an interesting selection of primarily Austrian wines. The bar is well stocked and proved to be a great area for meeting and socialising in the afternoon after a days skiing where complimentary hot drinks and light refreshments were available.

The sauna and well being facility is new but please be aware that there is a charge of €40 for using this, that it is a mixed sex and you are naked.

Finally, the General Manager is a cat called Tequila which was just fine by us.

The Kristian consistently delivers service and quality and we have already booked for 2015.
